parish value at its lowest, Langford was the one to trade. He won’t be in our next premiership side, and would fetch us a first round pick.

Langford and stringer had similar outputs, albeit slightly different role, one got traded for 53, the other would have got us another pick in the first round.

I agree with a lot of posters saying we didn’t really achieve anything this trade and free agency period. I hope there is something in the works for next year, because we are turning into st kilda.

Langford is one of the unsung leaders who has played wherever the coaches have wanted him to play. Has always trained at a professional level and was the guy that ripped into everyone when the whole Saad / Smith Covid bubble was going down. He was the one that called them out for being selfish pricks and not having pride in the jumper.
Yes he had trade value but when your culture is at the level ours has been he is the guy you want around the young blokes coming through.

Why did we not look at Kennedy.
Because he's an average inside mid similar to players we already have and lacks flexibility in where he plays?

Our leadership is an issue no doubt but it’s an issue with or without langers. I rate him and would loved to acquire another first rounder without trading him, but there aren’t many on our list that would actually get us that pick.

Langers would have got us the pick and we had stringer in a similar position giving similar output that we ended up trading for pick 53.

I’d personally would have loved to be able to trade Shiel and parish and walked off with top picks but it wasn’t realistic.

But all this stems from a lack of direction from the club during trade period and fa.

I didn’t mind which way we went.

Keep everyone good and aim to add another star alongside.
Or
cut back and get as many top picks as possible, while opening roles for younger guys.

Instead it seems we are in a holding pattern, which I hope leads to a direction next off season.

Stoked to have kako coming though.

I’m also interested in the development arc of some of our younger guys. Plenty here have written off some of our young guys but the same posters would have written off langers at that stage in his career.

I made a comment in the last few days about jungle drums beating (in context of calling out the mediocrity of Perkins, Cox, Reid, Hobbs not improving or staying on the park)

If we dont see some improvement, we'd be close to needing to blow this re build up (... again) and start over.

Have the complete opposite view. A big part of why we are what we are is there are not enough guys like Langford who care about the jumper.
You do not build club culture by moving out one of the few guys who gets it simply because he can give you some trade value.
These are the guys we need to keep to build the culture for the next generation.

for all of Rutten's short comings, iirc he was building a respect for the history of the jumper and clubs history.

I know the culture for strong clubs like Sydney is huge, hopefully we can change this soon and have total buy in from staff, coaches, players, supporters

If you move on guys like Langford and McGrath (whose leadership is highly rated internally) the message the coach and captain are trying to send gets watered down. You gotta hold onto those leaders even if football-wise they might not be the best onfield performers.

The idea is to trade back in at a later point with those picks after the Kako bid is matched.

That way those picks don’t get absorbed with Kako bid and we can bring in 3-4 players.

Then likely add 2 new rookie list players (Naim+ Nguyen)

So trade them out, then similar picks back in? That would be quite an impressive logistical dance. I can't see it working out that way.

Teams rate this draft quite highly. For both 28 and 31 we should be able to get a Future 2nd from someone.

these trades will be agreed upon before draft day. Would be mismanagement not too given the advantages that come with matching bids.

Then trading F2 for 33 or 35 or whatever different pick in that range is pretty good value since the 2nd round typically starts about pick 22-25 there’s some upside there for any clubs we’d want to trade with plus at that point in the draft it’s a bit of a crapshoot so there will be players we like that other clubs might not be interested in

Yeah I'm confident we could trade it out, just not so confident in trading back in. Especially to a pick in the early 30's of a deep draft.

Which teams would benefit doing that?

Specifically: not sure.
In general.

Teams that have limited list spots,
Teams that like the draft and think they can trade in later for someone cheaper.
Teams that want points/assets for next year.

Langford is one of the guys we need leading the team, he has the respect of the whole locker room, trains hard and is professional while also performing on field. He’s one of the few that we have in that age bracket to lead this group forward. parish should’ve been let go as a free agent last year, that was the move, instead we signed him long term

Welcome to Essendon Josh Rotham

I think my frustration is we are half-pregnant as always. Pretty much impossible to get elite talent that way. Let’s hope and pray that Melbourne break some mirrors, run over black cats and walk under a ladder or two. And stir their tea with a knife.

Spoke to a guy today that watches a lot of West Coast. He was surprised Culley got turfed and thinks that one could come back to bite. When I asked him about Witherden he said composure with ball under pressure was a serious issue that didn't improve - we have enough of that already.
