Should be driving up the price at the dogs with both Bont and Ed Richards

Id see if 1.3 gets Richards interested after offering Bont 1.6 x 4 years assuming were very fine for salary cap and not denying an opportunity to Harley

Starcevich absolutely aswell, we just dont have any of those brute defenders in the Maynard/Starcevich mould who dont just defend well but move well and offer the other way

They all improve our side a bit, so why not

If they don’t improve us enough to be actual contenders we are just prolonging mediocrity. It would be better to bottom out or target fringe young players/fringe players and hope to get lucky

I do hear you, but getting quality free agents without having to give draft capital away is crucial. That may not put us in a position 12 months after but down the track in 3 years it will be crucial

Also say instead of getting say pick 4, we get pick 6 instead because weve picked up a Starcevich.

I will say there is a bit of very early draft selections taking known quantities a bit and some really high end ceiling guys being around that 5-8 range

Even imo there is a world where Gresham ask for a trade to a 3rd club end of this year if he starts to get pushed out. Say we get a pick ~35/40 for him, weve essentially got him for only money for 2 years which we had plenty of and then also got a draft pick in return. Just an interesting aspect to free agents that can occur

Fwiw Starcevich is down my list when i see guys like LDU, Ed Richards, Brayshaw, Bont types albeit the last couple would be very unlikely to move

I agree that quality free agents can help the teams that get them hugely.

They can also block development opportunities and unbalance the list if targeted incorrectly.

So you have to be careful

If the players are banging the door down that much then that free agent in that same position isnt even being considered

Usually if the developing player is banging the door down that much there is a way to get them in, in some form, in someway

Getting better does require developing internal talent but you also need to learn to win, and start a magnetic vibe that ultimately attracts trade targets and FAs at better value

I’m not into FA if we are looking for a saviour, but surely there are some good fits out there who can help us in the right way

Starcevich is a very good player and had a good grand final, but lets not forget he played on Bobby Hill the year before. He's a good honest one on one defender, but I'm not interested in the 800k contract that would required to pry him.

1.3 for Richards 😳
He won’t be getting any more than 750-800 in that side after they have paid Bont, Darcy, JUH et al
We are paying our skipper less than 1 million, and the Saints offered him money like that to leave.
If Perryman got $850+ that will be Starcevitchs starting price if he has a good season.

This is why Essendon currently has 1000 small mids. Oh hey we have Merrett and just drafted Parish. Let’s spend 3 FRP and 2 2RP on Sheil, Caldwell and Hobbs all of whom can’t play with them/at the same time.

Young guys take time and stunting their development by bringing in B grade players just to block their opportunities doesn’t make sense.

We have a younger list. guys aren’t retiring so finding a spot for a free agent that is additive will involve directly replacing someone on the list.

It’s a good thing to do to be sure. But we lack elite talent and list cohesion. Bringing in more talent that doesn’t aid cohesion/balance will make things worse

Im big on Richards, if people didnt see his season last year i think he will get notice this year

Have to pay more to get guys to leave, its also basically buying to keep a draft pick and not have to trade a first rounder for someone of his ilk

Also very much a need, would be our biggest and quickest mid (borderline with Durham), very good defensivily and also a very good kick

As you said Saints offered 1.6 to Zerrett, who isnt a FA

Weve had guys like Battle and Perryman reported around 900k mark give or take. Eds a far superior player to them

With those top picks you just take best available.... ie Parish, Hobbs (Hobbs was a no brainer clear standout at that pick, that alot of clubs came for hard)

I didnt agree and want to give up 2 x 1st for Shiel, and said we shouldve walked away as Dodoro wanted to

Your comparing bananas to apples by comparing trade vs FA. With Free Agency you keep those 2 x 1 lst round picks now instead of what happened with Shiel

Starcevich is an A grade defender imo and also your assuming kids cant develop through training and VFL

Quality kids demand a spot and dont get overlooked. There is probably a very small % that excel that wouldnt have due to opportunity

Shiel was never meant to play with Hobbs and Caldwell. They were considered his successors. There is little to no point playing Shiel at 32 years old with what hes offering and at our list stage, atleast in a prominant position

I understand the cost aspect of free agency (free vs picks) and how that’s a free talent upgrade that allows draft capital to be spent elsewhere.

My point about list balance was less about how those players are/were aquired and more about how unbalanced lists can create challenges and list holes.

Also guys can develop in the VFl. But players don’t do that forever. They want opportunities and if they deserve them they should get them. If not they leave and succeed elsewhere.

We’re just lucky Sheil got injured and parish had his breakout before he was traded. Otherwise we’d have let go of 2 future AA types because we refused to play them

Hobbs was definitely a no brainer. As in you’d have to not possess a brain.

Didn't Richmond offer us like 17, 28 and 29 for that pick? We wouldn't have had to draft old man McDonagh if we took it

Don’t know about the exact deal but would have taken it. Really wanted NWM but after he was off the board definitely would have run the gauntlet with three picks before 30. Though certain one would have been Howes.

Weren't we into Michito Owens too? If we had that, imagine Owens, Howes and Arlo Draper (who failed but we were keen apparently).

Wasn’t Jacob Van Rooyen in that draft too, if he was he’d of been a good get, especially as he went pick 19 to Melbourne, I think Johnson also slid to 21 to Fremantle too.

To be fair Hobbs was spoken about as the next Joel Selwood and we were screaming for an in and under inside mid. He was the perfect pick for us, the issue is more that he hasn’t (yet) reached the potential he showed in his draft year
