Recruiting AFL Trade & Free Agency XII - 💰💰💰

If Essendon once again trades multiple first rounders for another ordinary player that will be the end of my tether. I've just about had enough. You can get absolute guns in the first round if you choose correctly. The club need to do the right thing, not what is popular. It wasn't long ago you all wanted to sell the farm for Brayshaw.
Brayshaw would've been as a FA from memory?

I think how we perform this season will determine a lot.

Finish up top: keep the team together. Keep building and add depth/upgrade via free agency and the draft.

Finish middle: Cut deeper into the list and look to turnover more established players for younger players/draft assets. Rework groups that likely aren’t working.

Finish Bottom:
Fire sale, any player who can bring back band 1 or 2 compo is out: Draper, Caldwell, Bryan ect Load up on top draft picks. Bring in 5/6 guys in the top 30 with 3 top 10

Even if we finish bottom. Don’t really need a fire sale. We have a really strong hand as is. If Draper were to go and net us a band one we could have 3 top 5 picks and two second rounders.

I can see a reality where we finish bottom few and contend the year after. I don’t think a gutting of the list is necessary. We just need a few elite prospects to complement a well balanced list.

Sorry to say this but Draper ain’t netting us a Band 1 compo.

Nobody is paying him North of $875 so we won’t be getting band 1 compo. End of first round is the best we will get for him.

Apart from Merrett who on our list would get band 1 compensation coming back? We have a few good ordinary players but very little in the elite area.

Caldwell is the main one. Draper also a possibility just given a premium being placed on a physically developed ruck.

The way the cap is rising pretty easy to do a short term band 1 deal

I disagree, Perryman being a bit part player got 6 years at 850k. Contracts aren't what they used to be.

To be a number 1 ruckman for 8 years is easily getting that and we wouldn't let him go for less. Only reason his ruck metrics output dropped off is we are running other rucks ahead of him because they can't play forward. All his forward metrics were rated above average or elite for rucks. At Adelaide he's the perfect ruck to run tandem with Thilthorpe. Gets an 80-20 split.

I agree that you don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak.

But also guys aren’t getting any younger and Tassie is right around the corner.

Getting your engine room right and filled with elite guys would be such an advantage (and might be needed to go up against Richmond)

….

Personally I don’t think we finish that low,

He's not worth it but all it takes is the right team needing him enough.

I can see Adelaide offering 900k.

The compo for Draper will depend on this season. The same level Draper will not be band 1 but an improved Draper who can play forward and kicks goals probably will. Personally I do not see a lot of improvement available in Sam's ruck game other than being about to cover a bit more ground if he is injury free. I do think he has scope to improve as a forward and possibly be a player that can play second ruck / FP and kick 40 odd goals.

I honestly don't see it. I think the shock factor made him more effective, teams will have found ways to nullify him as a forward over summer.

I think it entirely depends how much capital Adelaide is prepared to spend on him, and whether or not they want to negotiate a deal in which a FRP is involved.

Comes down to his marking. Not great around the ground but he can take 2 or 3 grabs in the forward half.

has a club matched a free agency offer yet and forced a trade?
Jeremy Cameron
Dangerfield was a matched bid, but it felt like there was a pre-agreed trade to boost compensation to the Crows IIRC.
It wasn't actually, they just skipped doing the paperwork stuff and moved straight to negotiating the trade
