Stop and brace for contact is somehow worst than running through a player he started to lined up 15m, sure bruh lol.
Stop and brace for contact that wouldnt have come had he not stopped.
Rankine instigated an off the ball collision on an unsuspecting player, Houston bumped a player with the ball.
One is an unnecessary choice, the other a poor option.

Choosing to bump an unexpected player front on with his shoulder hitting him head is an unnecessary choice, Rankine stop and braced for contact and both ended up with head collision. You think Rankine wanted to hit his head against his opponent???? There was a noticeable team directive to rough up Rankine, Houston saw the chance 10m out in a close game and decided to bump arguably our best player which KO Rankine, he will likely get 6 weeks.

I think you're mostly correct, but are you bringing this up only to compare the two incidents or are you insinuating that Rankine was hard done by to be banned for an avoidable head clash?

Rankine should have been suspended but I thought 4 weeks was on the severe end (initially thought 2 or 3) but clearly the AFL is taking concussion more seriously now which is a good thing.

Rubbish, Rankine knows full well when he takes possession of the ball he will be under direct pressure, Starcevic was jogging along and should not have to consider a shoulder off the ball.

1 iis a poorly executed example of a bump which in itself has not been banned during play, the other is unnecessary forceful contact on an unsuspecting player.
Do you think it was Dans intention to KO Rankine and miss some finals, c'mon.

Houston was late to the contest and will cop his wack.
Rankine didnt need to initiate contact on Starcevic.

4 down to 3.

Yeah I don't think Rankine intended to clash heads with Starcevic. In fact given the height difference I'd say it was near impossible outcome. Houston intent was to put Rankine into next week

Rankine's shoulder didn't hit his head unlike Houston's did, it was a head collision that caused the concussion. Houston's intention was to rough up Rankine which occurred the entire game and he got it wrong with his shoulder collecting Rankine's head. It's a more severe action than what Rankine did, will likely be 6 weeks.

Not when graded careless. Jog on.

A head collision unnecessary and as a result of contact initiated off the ball.

Houston was late to a contest.

Graded as Careless, High, Severe and sent straight to the tribunal.

What a shock lol

4 week trigger minimum and that’s fair enough

Considering Rankine deliberately lined up and concussed a guy off the ball and got 4 weeks with seasons still on the line for both those teams.

Houston lined up and concussed Rankine while contesting the ball in a dead rubber for Rankines team.

How can the penalty be 4 weeks or more given those circumtances, it cannot be any more than 3 weeks at maximum.

How was he contesting the ball? The ball was in play but he had no intentions of contesting the ball?

the bump is still useful for contests and shepherding as long as it's reasonable to do so. Smashing Rankine while he was exposed because he was winning the pill is unreasonable

And the reasonable technique if you do choose to bump him is crunch his ribs. Which is still legal, and I really hate the Facebook boomer types crying the “bump is dead” when we still have players getting absolutely poleaxed in the ribs.

Probably not, but he did and it was his choice to initiate off the ball contact.

This was in play, on a player in possession.

Even if Houston escapes with 4 and even if Port lose their first final and win the next 2...given he isn't part of their future why would they play him anyway at the expense of a bloke who helped get them there?

Hope this idea of being lenient to give him a GF chance is knocked on its head even harder than what Houston did to Rankine.

You're dreaming if you think that saves him. He should go to Melbourne cos he is Gawwnnnnnnn
I dont think it saves him at all, I think it puts him in the 4 down to 3 range because it was split second, in play and he's not a dirty player.
We'll see where the dust settles soon enough.

Either way, Port will get a glimpse of life post Houston should he indeed leave.

We move on because thats all you can do.

I tend to agree on the former.

I think Dan knows he sung the song for the final time last night as a named player.
