NRL flag outside AFL HQ. No sirree!

THE footy seasons — both for the AFL and the National Rugby League are over — but that doesn't mean the rivalry gets put on hold. The word is that the NRL, eager to promote the Australia-England World Cup clash in Melbourne on Derby Day weekend, persuaded Melbourne Events to fly 100 banners promoting the game throughout the city. Which it did, everywhere but outside AFL's Docklands headquarters, where eight were hoisted but the AFL demanded they be pulled down — and they were!

They can't even bring themselves to support Australia at a World Cup, my god, this is so unAustralian from one of our biggest sporting bodies, I mean, they sent people over to Germany to support Australia in the Soccer, they didn't mention anything during the 2003 RUWC, but as soon as Rugby League tries to get support down South, the door slams shut, how sad and how petty.

(please don't lock this thread as I think people should know that the AFL is being a tad precious)

not surprised....they did bring back their sham of a international series back just to go up against league

The AFL has every right to object to RL banners being flown in front of their Headquarters, just as any major business would do. As for the International Rules Series, well that was always coming back this year and had NOTHING to do with the RLWC. In fact you can say the people who will be interesting in one won't be interested in the other (expect for the normal few).

I suggest RL people get over the idea that the AFL is trying to get them or that the AFL is even worried about them.

I think you overrate how popular the NRL could ever be in Melbourne.

Union has its place, as small as that may be, the FIFA World Cup is a much, much bigger sporting event and one that holds much more prestige and significance in Australian sporting history than the Rugby League world cup will ever do. A World cup were you can be named in one nations squad and yet be called up as a replacement into another teams squad isn't really fantastic.

Melbourne's interest/support in Rugby League will grow a little bit over the next few years, with SOO 1 at the Telstra Dome and once the Storm move into the new stadium, but it will never reach a proportion where it could be mentioned in the same breath as AFL.

Its similar to sydney, AFL will never be able to hold a torch to the amount of interest that the NRL has.

Put it this way, if you worked for Telstra and Optus was sponsoring and event nearby, do you think Telstra would allow them to put there signings up all over the place?

I think not.

Nice try, but no try.

That series was always set to come back at some stage. (why im not sure, its really quite embarrasing watching the Irish amatures compete with Professional sportsman).

living in denial...why else would AFL put a 2nd team into a city that barely supports 1 and the game itself?

I was astonished at the 60 minutes story this year..done by channel 9 who basically runs rugby league and they do it a pro afl story and how its taking over west sydney..

AFL promotes the hell out of Keiran Jack and Garry at every swans game and make sure he is in screen and also then get Garry to bitch about what rugby league is doing wrong.

I think everyone knows here Rugby League is the weakest out of the 4 footy codes because the media and our administrators are killing the game.

Stop trying to rubbish the AFL for attempting to grow the game.

It's not being precious at all, it's just good business.

Nice try, but no try.

Personally I love both codes

Speaking to mad AFL nuts, you realise that the reason mainstream Melbourne rejects rugby league is because its an un-Melbourne like sport.

1. Its about passing rather kicking. Kicking in rugby is only ever a very last resort. Sports that do well in Melb (footy, and soccer) are kicking sports

2. RL is too structured and predictable for Melb people. Nearly always gonna see 5 hit ups and a kick nowadays. Footy's more free flowing and open, which ironacilly is why its rejected by Sydney and Brisbane people;)

Not a bad point Bruce...

At the end of the day, it would be great for both codes to get along, but in the present climate, their competing for the same market. As much as I love league, I can see why it would be stupid for the AFL to allow RL banners up in front of their HQ. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though we can have a country of people following two codes at once...

You just proved my point:rolleyes:

But anyway I'm against a Second Team in Sydney because as you said there just isn't enough support in the whole of Sydney for one team (ie the Swans) let alone two.

I also agree the media does go over the top in pushing any positive AFL news about AFL in Sydney. But that doesn't mean the NRL can't do the same in Melbourne or that its even a bad thing. Your just upset that the AFL has better control over the media and yet isn't owned in anyway by the media. Yes bad news is and will be highlighted like the NRL, but we can at least get in our good news stories.

That's the difference between the two codes, the AFL choose to highlight our positive news in Sydney as much as we can, the NRL doesn't (or rarely does). This also goes to TV Rights deals and TV times in Prime Time outside the heartland markets.

You can bitch and moan about the AFL being scared of the NRL all you like but at the end of the day the AFL is going into the Gold Coast because it has to (as in "every other sport is, so the AFL might as well join in). But Western Sydney is a sign of being scared. Its a business move, a dumb one, but a business move.

Bahahaha UnAustralian?

Wasn't Rugby made in England? Lol thats ridiculous.

And why would they promote the RLWC? Obliviously they targeted AFL HQ, so they have every right to tell them to **** off.

Dont victorians love afl so much because it is 'their game' the stuff about passing and kicking is well a nothing...

AFL has been around for '150' years...rugby in sydney for same amount and league for 100 years these are the long serving sports in the areas so they have to support behind them..

BTW hell yeh I'm scared..Wayne Bennett summed it up perfectly...'The other codes compared to rugby league arent nearly as half as good, but they have great salesman, they give themselves a rap and tell everyone about their product and what it can offer'

Robbie was spot on i must say, league doesnt do enough good stories about players, news ltd loves the bad image as it sells more papers and this is a major issue for the game.

As I so often ask, why post on an AFL board if you hate the game? Surely you have better things to do than complain about the evil AFL and them dominating your game.

There's a reason the AFL is dominating, and it's not salesmanship, it's because more people support the game. End of story.

Yep, I watched the Sydney v North Melbourne AFL Final and half the game was dedicated to Kieran Jack.

In fact it was the first time I heard rugby league mentioned on a Ten AFL telecast since they called RL fans "neanderthals" before the 2006 Origin decider at the Telstra Dome.

Really is Wayne Bennett going to come out and say "Shit, i thought our game was good but then i saw a Lions v Swans game and i tell ya what, thats simply a better game"?

No chance.

My god some of you people are pathetic, it didn't say they put any of these banners on the AFL's building did they?

If it's across the road or next door, wtf has it got to do with the almighty AFL?

And I'll stand by what I said, someone has to tell the truth once in a while, the AFL are being petty and they are showing fear.

I think if you look closely enough, you'll see this is the RL board, now grow a brain.

its AFL vs RL.

the AFL has no problem promoting Rugby League, soccer, cricket, anything outside the Dome. it is only RL. why, because league, despite having a world cup, is only prominant in 3 countries - Australia, NZ and England. the rest of the countries are almost amature.

it is good promotion. promote the world games, do not promote the narrow minded ones.

Don't speak about things you have no idea about.

Sorry but you are wrong. The AFL NEVER promote the other footy codes themselves outside the Dome....there must be some sort of agreement with the Dome management and whoever is going to put on such an event.

I think you should have read through your post first before pushing the "submit now" button.

You said afl has no problem promoting rugby league - I think you should have typed rugby union.
You also said its a good promotion, promote the world games - this is a RWC Game.
One thing I do tend to agree with you on is rugby league is run by narrow minded people, even though you did not specifically say that:p
