That would suggest it’s the player wanting out

As the club clearly rate her
Birch does do a bit of media, I wonder how much the adjustments clubs have to make to fit the Additional Services Agreement into the cap by 2025 had on what she wanted for her contract.
🤷‍♂️

From what I've seen, none of her media gigs (Seven, The Age, 3AW) or her 8 billion ambassadorial roles are with club sponsors, and are thus unrelated to ASAs.

Furthermore, Daisy (before she skedaddled for a fat Cat contract) assured us of Melbourne's holier than thou culture, where the players aren't motivated by trivial things like salaries.

I guess it's possible that culture has fallen apart under Kate Hore, which would seem to make a mockery of her recently won AFLPA Best Captain award (something Emma Kearney has never finished Top 5 in btw, lest we wonder about the award's credibility).

If so, it would be plausible that Melbourne are moving Zanker up to be the third Tier 1 player to lock her away long term, thereby necessarily pushing numerous Tier 2 and Tier 3 players (such as Birch and Gay) down a level to compensate.

The reason Kearney has never finished top 5 in the AFLPA best captain award is because she doesn’t deserve it. Her antics in this years Grand Final clearly demonstrate this.

I'm not saying this couldn't be the case. But on the other hand, maybe the club is trying to push her out and shop her around to get a better draft hand and as such she feels disrespected which is why she didn't show up. Just a thought

Playing for free kicks is better than just outright squibbing contests, which was a feature of Kate Hore's award-winning season.

Hurt feelings are obviously a factor when the players vote, which is why a quiet player like Garner tends to do well in the AFLPA awards (but it in turn means she doesn't get noticed by the umpires).

They still have to offer her a contract in order to retain the right to shop her around though.

Looks better to be traded than delisted tho.
Not for Melbourne. Having a 26yo dual All-Australian request a trade, at the same time a number of other players walk out, looks pretty bad for them. Especially on the back of an embarrassing straight sets exit.

All of that kinda suggests the place has fallen apart since the departure of Daisy, who was the sole reason Birch came to the club.

Do we know she hasn't been offered a contract?
The suggestion that she hasn't been offered a contract was made by a poster who also claimed she wasn't at the B&F presentation last night:

So that kinda throws the poster's credibility into doubt, even before considering the incongruity of the initial claim on its own, given a player who hasn't been offered a contract wouldn't need to request a trade (they can just join a new club as a free agent).

If they offer her a contract lower than the tier they are on, can’t the player just move as a free agent?

Yeah something’s definitely changed but still a very successful side last few years, you still have to get to the second week of finals to go out in straight sets.
Birch is elite and maybe wants leadership and a different atmosphere…?
As a junior
State Hockey Captain
State netball Captain
Gets drafted after one season with Darebin has probably played less than 90 games of Aussie Rules in her life
2 x AA
2X Flags with 2 clubs.

Pretty unusual just to let a talent like that walk

Only if the new club offers her a contract equal to, or better than, the tier she was on in the season just completed.

Ok, thanks for that clarification.
So I’m guessing she could have gone to Hawthorn for nothing and been on the same tier but North, like Melbourne, will need to pay her less because they are keen stacked so a trade will need to be done.

Emma Kearney is a great leader and captain. Fierce competitor. She did nothing out of ordinary in the GF except play a consistent game and lead a good team. They were just beaten by a better team on the day and that's footy. There were no such antics, it all happens in footy and thats what makes great players like a great player she is.

In the scenario where Melbourne offered her a downgraded contract from Tier 2 down to 4 (which I'm not saying is the case, just seems plausible to me), it's hard to imagine Hawthorn not being able to offer her a Tier 2 contract. And I'd have thought, in that scenario, North would offer Tier 3.

For those wondering: Tier 2 in 2023 was $71k, while Tiers 2-3-4 in 2024 are $78k, $67k and $56k. So in the above scenario, Birch's options for next year are a) $7k payrise at Hawthorn, b) $4k paycut at North, and c) $15k paycut at Melbourne. Keeping in mind the reporting around her, until Friday, was the she's "considering a number of options".

Thanks Mrs. Kearney

Her desperate and pathetic effort to clear the backline by kicking off the ground, straight to Koenen, instead of placing your head over the pill, shows that she squibs contests.
