"THE AFLW'S first fully national draft will be held on Monday, December 16, with a seven-day trade period locked in for the week prior. While last year's draft allowed prospects to nominate for a national pool, the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft will be the first time in the competition's history that all players will be eligible to be drafted to any club across the country. Previous drafts were state-based, due to the part-time nature of the competition, but an average 20 per cent increase in remuneration for AFLW draftees as well as the recent introduction of relocation allowances have paved the way for a fully national draft."

Amber Clarke being courted by St Kilda

The Saints are expected to be a key player in this year's AFLW Trade Period and are understood to be keen to secure Clarke, who the Bombers claimed with the No.4 pick from the 2022 pool.

Clarke is contracted at Essendon through until the end of next season, with the Bombers adamant she will be held to her deal, though rivals believe the Saints have shown a willingness to be bold in their trading this off-season.

They hold the No.8 selection in the first ever national draft, which will be held on December 16, while they have made an active start to the AFLW Trade Period which is set to open on Thursday.

Paige Scott being courted by Richmond

Scott, Essendon’s No.8 selection from the 2022 draft pool, is uncontracted at the Bombers beyond this season and has garnered interest from Richmond as the Tigers look to add to their forward line stocks.

Clarke and Scott have both become mainstays in Essendon's AFLW side since joining the club, making 29 and 28 appearances respectively across their first three seasons at the Bombers.

Clarke played in nine of Essendon's 11 games this year – including in its elimination final defeat to Fremantle – and kicked six goals, while Scott featured seven times before losing their place in the side late in the season.

Not sure losing Amber Clarke is all that good. Not like we are a fast side and Amber was one of our quicker players. Just not sure they have their recruiting quite right. I suppose the upside is we have picks 8 and 11.

The absolute worst case scenario has happened, letting a young player of her calibre go for nothing is some horrible list management.

List management issue yes but there has to be something wrong in the program for them to want out ?

There is obviously some issues either with the club or player but it could have certainly been handled better

Is dodo now running our AFLW side now?
Nope but Harmit Singh left like 2 years ago, helped with the initial list build and then I think he went to Collingwood? And Georgia Harvey does the AFLW recruiting stuff, being previously the men’s recruiting team contract officer/list administrator (learned the craft from Dodoro and company…)

Not sure if she’s working on things mostly by herself now with Singh gone. The GM-AFLW Aysha Ward does seem to be somewhat involved as she’s quoted in articles about the trade period, and one would hope and expect that the CEO would have a role in it given his experience and expertise.

The overall culture of AFLW as a league is not really as tribal though, lots of players change clubs every year looking for more money or opportunities, and clubs let them go just as easily.

Clubs don’t really have the resources to inspire loyalty either, with small playing lists, limits on contract lengths, and a restricted number of players who can be paid at each tier.

The club had a successful program at a lower level with great people involved. They threw it away, like yesterday's jam.
