So in total our dealings have been

Gave up: Allen, Levy, pick 16, pick 34
Gained: Ewings, Pick 12, pick 43

That's starting to look a bit more like it. Ewings should play a similar role to the one Levy has been playing, and if she can get anywhere near her best is a big upgrade. Allen out is a loss, but she's barely featured in our side for the last two seasons and at least we've upgraded pick 16 to pick 12, getting ahead of Port in the process. And pick 34 -> 43 is far enough out that it probably doesn't make much difference.

What's more likely to succeed though? An extremely talented player with a few personal issues who phoned it in last time she played, or a speculative pick 39 in a now national draft?

I'm taking Hannah every time. It's a great get for us.
If all bodes well for Ewings yes for certain it’s a great move and Clarke’s more inclined to play anyone that’s not a teenager, no question out of the SA juniors produced only ranks just behind Young, Scheer, Goody & Jones as the best that’s come through, definitely worth the hope that all of the issues can be smoothed over but in sport you can never fully really know. Just hope all parties are well aware it probably will not be all smooth sailing which it looks like going by Phil’s comments they at least are.

So ideally as a player you’d want Ewings to fill that 3rd main mid spot which was rotated this year between Ponter & Newman, so long way out at looking at things but will be interesting if they just try to sort the forward line issues out by not getting another marking forward but by reducing Ponter's midfield minutes. My inevitable whinging for Hatchard to again become a permanent forward next year will come before next season starts.

Alternatively, she has played as a forward as well during her time at Port (albeit without much success). They could look to put her there in the short term.

B S. Allan - Prowse
HB Goodwin - Biddell - Mueller

R J. Allan - Marinoff - Charlton
C Newman - Ewings - Kelly

HF Ponter - Randall - Hatchard
F Jones - Gould

I Boileau - 1st Round - Tonon/Munyard/Ballard/Kustermann for the last three spots. Maybe throw in the other Irish girls too

Like you alluded to when I’ve seen Ewings play even at SANFLW level is not a forward, only position you’d consider other than midfield would be halfback, which wouldn’t be a bad move to start next season to see where she’s at.

So I havent read the new rules etc, is this still a draft whereby players can nominate states or no ??

Problem is the few holes that are still obvious in that lineup however and again they’ll be relying on other areas of the ground to cover them.

Still missing another marking forward/a back up ruck to help J.Allan who tired after halftime in nearly every game with a lack of decent support, also still have zero dangerous small forward goal-kicking options and unless Boyle-Carr can fill it the team really gets exposed by not having a running halfback with a decent kick that can set up play.

At least one of those holes needed to be addressed and hasn’t.

I would personally use pick 12 on a forward which would fill one of those holes

The article notes Hannah was mentored by Chelsea Randall when she was a member of our academy. That relationship is probably going to be crucial to getting her back out on the park, I can't think of anyone better to have in that role
I hope Chelsea is at her house right now setting up her fitness program.
Get her fit and it could be the difference between an extra premiership and fading away into a rebuild.

Getting her on track mentally is the first part of that. A change can be as good as a holiday, as they say.

Given the AFLW trade mouthpiece Riley Beveridge hasn’t reported the Crows even being interested in anyone other than that Geelong player Moloney who went to the Swans I think it’s looking pretty safe to assume Phil ‘Organic Growth’ Harper has gone on holidays and set up the automated ‘out of the office till’ email.

They again obviously believe what’s going to take them that one step further next time around is sitting back and just adding another Irish convert & couple of teenagers while relying on the current playing group (including those who have proven over recent seasons they are unable to handle finals pressure) on being a year older & a year wiser.

Of course no-one really knows but I would’ve hoped they would’ve at least tried to get someone who had shown something in the league or at least had some experience but from the outside it looks like total crickets, you’d at the very least hope someone asks the question to Scheer every year if she’s gotten sick of Geelong.
This aged well.

Will be interesting what happens with that pick now, I’ve been saying all week the most obvious player the Crows looked like they’d be after by jumping ahead of Port would be Poppy Scholz who Port obviously would’ve had interest in and who’s widely seen as the most gifted athletic tall prospect who’ll be available around that pick but after struggling to make an impact as a 15/16 year old as a forward all her best football has been since she was moved to defence or when she’s had stints in the ruck.

Personally as contradictory as it sounds given how much I’ve banged on about increasing the tall stocks but I wouldn’t totally rule out not going for the key position player at 12, I personally would be tempted to go for a small forward/speed instead at that pick especially if Georgia McKee from Centrals who fits both those needs makes it through to there the club should be tempted - she’d be a top 5 prospect if she didn’t do her ACL last year, while my personal favourite Charlotte Riggs also from Centrals (who is a far better forward than Scholz) is the key position player I’d take at 12.

Probably weigh up if it’s harder to find a decent key position player or a very quick small at the 2nd pick, as I’ve said all year though…

Loving reading Hannah Ewings AFLW Career summarized through the Port Board!
Sounds like she just wanted out of the joint..from a fair way back.
Wishing her all the best at her new loving home. 😆

Well Port are a franchise club with no history. The real depth and history of women's football in SA is at the Adelaide Crows. So it's no surprise she'd want to play for us

Sounds good to me. A good small forward is something we've lacked for our entire AFLW tenure. Waterhouse doesn't appear capable of making the step up, and Martin's days are numbered. And while Munyard finished the year strongly, she's hardly irreplaceable.

We have arguably the best contested marking forward in the game. We should have a quick, quality small forward at her feet who can actually kick over a jam tin.

A forward line of Gould, Randall, Ponter, Jones and a good small forward actually looks pretty dangerous, at least on paper.

And if worse comes to worse and the person they pick doesn't work out as a forward, adding some speed through the midfield would also be welcome.

Our trade where we moved picks 16 and 34 to picks 12 and 48 was a decent little win in our favour, but has anyone seen what Richmond did in that same trade?

Moved picks 12, 30 and 48 into picks 10, 34 and 38. So the only pick that got downgraded at all was 30 -> 34, and meanwhile they moved 12 -> 10, and 48 -> 38. That's comically tilted in their favour.

Someone must be losing out in that trade when all the other clubs are getting wins.

It's interesting to me that Mithen (plus one second-round pick) essentially went for pick 2, while all these other trades are going for picks out in the 30s and 40s. Don't get me wrong, Mithen is a quality player, but there seems to be a huge discrepancy in how players and picks are valued.
