Jess must’ve read the writing on the wall. Posted on Instagram that they’ve sold their house and are moving to Melbourne for more opportunities. Not sure whether that means footy wise or more lifestyle wise.
I haven't been able to get a good read on Kustermann. Sometimes she looks super quick and clever out there, and yet she gets involved in the play so rarely. It's hard to square those two.
That is definitely true, but even when she's out there, so often I see her in the vicinity of the play, but not actually impacting on it.
And then other times I'll see her burst into a contest with speed and either nullify it or win it, and I'll think, why haven't you been doing that all along?

It’s pretty safe to assume this first release of re-signings were the lowest tier deals, Kustermann & Boyle-Carr signing for 2-years and Smith & Tarlinton on 1-year deals would all be right at the end of the pile. Probably the first deals done to get them out of the way to see what is left for the rest.
Not going to be easy to keep all those who have committed happy with the tiers of payment they may be on especially now with the looming cut to the Additional Services Agreements (ASA) confirmed for next year (https://www.afl.com.au/news/1263810)
Length of Gould’s & Prowse’s deals will be interesting, do they agree another 1 year extension with a bit of an increase or do they demand to go up a tier for a multi-year deal? Ponter would still want to stay around the top tier too & Newman is more than justified wanting to jump higher up the salary list after a decent season & staying loyal. Can imagine there’s only so many 1-year extensions and “we’ll increase it in the future” carrot and stick offers you can continue to string along to players before they do get a wondering eye.
Can’t see too much left over for the other 3 (Thompson, Boileau & Munyard), they might just have to be happy to accept what’s left.
Thompson likely dropping down a tier & adding an extra rookie will help a little freeing up salary but with Marinoff apparently on the biggest ASA (rumoured to be up to $150,000) + it’s unknown if Randall still has one as well so they’re going to have to do some creative accounting with the ASA’s now limited to only a $127,693 fund that’s shared among all listed players.

Maybe I'm completely out of touch, but $67k for the lowest tier is pretty good. The fact you only get an extra $22k to go up two tiers is not heaps.
Like would players rather play at a club like Adelaide or North where you win and play with your mates on $67k for not even an entire year of work, or go to GWS where you lose and have to move states but you're earning $22k more?
Which is why most have still chosen to stay over the years out of loyalty and relationships built, but like with all modern pro sports teams and that’s where they are heading in terms of player movement individuals will still have that human nature of a little bit of ego or grass is greener/easier path to take thoughts and if they feel they’re being underpaid (no matter by how little) or under appreciated it does have to weaken the resolve.
I think a lot of it will depend on whether we can demonstrate that we are going to be able to take that next step and get back into genuine premiership contention.
It's all well and good to want to be in a successful environment, but there are now plenty of teams who will play finals. Hell, Port Adelaide players enjoyed exactly the same number of wins this season as Adelaide players. We need to show that we're not just making up the numbers.

We were the second best team this year, we have the best player (or thereabouts) in the competition who is only 27, several of our other top tier players are even younger (Gould, Ponter, Hatchard, Biddell), we lost no one during the trade period and strengthened our list with the best SA junior and two other potentially elite young talents
There is no reason to think we will just be making up the numbers. Our premiership window should stretch to a decade or more.
Plus Port benefitted from a soft draw
I find it hard to believe players wouldn't want to be part of that and move to a team like GWS or some other bottom 4 side for a relatively small pay increase and the associated cost of moving interstate

In most pro sports the difference between a bottom and mid-upper contract is hundreds of thousands of dollars
The AFLW are enforcing an extremely flat payment structure. That will only benefit us in our goal for player retention, the incentive to move for money just won't be there. What it will do is hurt the crap teams whose stars could move to a winning side for a relatively small pay cut.
Were we the second best team? Brisbane and North both handily beat us. Obviously, Port's easy draw made a difference, and they won't have that next year, but they are also a fast improving team. Other teams are closing the gap as well.
I agree that the bulk of our team is young and still improving, although it's notable that our best finals player was also our oldest player.
I think we need to show that we can take that next step, or else risk becoming one of the bridesmaid teams and losing some of the appeal of playing for us.

I think we were better than Brisbane this year even though we lost to them twice (mostly due to bullshit). We certainly put up more of a fight against North in our final and H&A match against them than Brisbane did.
I honestly don't think clubs are closing the gap all that much. We would have comprehensively beaten 15 other teams in finals, which is no different to most other years. No team in the league added substantially more quality to the list than we did in the off season.
You can fairly argue that, all things being equal, we should have beaten Brisbane in the H&A season. But in the final, we simply weren't good enough. Yes, there was bullshit umpiring, but we did not play well enough to win that match.
In any event, North is the benchmark that we have to reach if we want to win another flag, and I'm not convinced we're set up to do that. At this stage I'm more resigned to hoping they have a fall from grace like we did in 2020, rather than hoping that we can catch them up on our own steam.

As I predicted ’carrot on stick’ extensions for the other 3, obviously want to release another article on the website for Gould & Thompson’s.
As I mentioned at the time I did see some speculation of her maybe contemplating the future post-season so you’d think it wouldn’t be 2, seems like the type that won’t be hanging on grimly ‘Brodie Smith’ style and will know the right time to hang ‘em up, so all likelihood it will be a one and done.
Slightly concerning that Prowse and Newman have only extended for one year, but I guess they will be pushing to continue moving up the tiers. We definitely need both of them going forward.

I think if the Crows kicked more accurately against us in our final you could have beaten us, regardless what we said in the media, I feel we put a log of emphasis into doing to Brisbane what they have done to us since we came into the competition. I honestly think Crows would have been more of a threat had you made the GF because I think there was a lot of animosity for Brisbane that didn't exist for the Crows and our games have in recent times been very close.
It will be interesting to see what happens next season. I still think it will be North, Crows and Brisbane in the top 4 which says a lot given we play each other every year and it makes it harder to stay in the top 4 given the season is so short. I am curious to see how teams like Port, Hawks and others who stepped up this year go next year with a more challenging schedule.
It was a pretty quiet draft for us given we traded our first pick to Richmond for Eilish Sheerin. I think the only player of note we lost in the off-season was Pullar who played most of the H&A games but was an emergency in the grand final. Sheerin is 32 years old so wont be around for a long time but was probably Richmond's second best player behind Conti, outside of complacency creeping in we should still be pretty strong next year.

My guess is they are currently rated 12 & 13 (Tier 3) in the list of crows players. My criteria was leadership positions held, All Aus, Club Champion top 5, Premiership & BOG in GF.
My Top 10 are
Tier 1 (1-2) - Marinoff, Hatchard
Tier 2 (3-8) - S. Allan, Randall, Ponter, Biddell, Gould, Jones
Tier 3 (9-14) - J Allan, N Kelly
We probably would have put up a better fight than Brisbane, as we match up better against North. But ultimately I think the result would have been the same.
The problem with needing to kick more accurately is that we have very few players who can kick both accurately and longer than around 30m. Which means it's pretty easy to set up a defensive structure that stifles our scoring. Hopefully the players we've recruited this year will help that!
This year was a perfect storm for North, with everything working all at the same time. Will it still be the case in 2025? If so, you guys can probably walk back into the GF... but who knows? I agree that North, Brisbane and Adelaide should be in the top 4 again.
