Game Day AFLW Non North Season 2021

I loved it, it was a great contest. Both teams showed a bit. Scotty must be having an influence down at Victoria Park

Whole family watched last night & really enjoyed it. Love the fact my boys are just into it because it is Aussie Rules & they see it as women playing at the highest level available to them.

Pies looked good and after our practice game loss it makes me feel a bit better - but it's hardly surprising. Lambert is a wonderful player and with Davey gives them a great start around the ball, their defence around Stacks is very solid, Molloy has star quality, and they work very hard. The only mystery is how their previous coach got so little out of them. Now they can afford to have Gowans as an assistant, their off-field resources are very strong.

Having said that, "stamped themselves as flag favorites" after one game is ludicrous. Carlton was and is being talked up but they aren't as great as all that - I was surprised they were favourites last night, let alone that anyone would see them as a competition benchmark. Last season, Freo were way out on front with North not far behind and a gap to the rest. I'd be waiting to see what those two teams look like for a start before talking about premiership contenders.

Spot on H2H.

While it is expected I found the traditional rival stuff really grating. Allow these teams to create genuine rivalries based on what unfolds on the field.

Carlton became flag favourites because they have two players who got the most media coverage - one is a good player who by quirk of the umpires voting, managed to steal the Brownlow equivalent out from underneath Jas Garner - and the other because a bunch of men couldn't keep their reptilian brains under control, propelling her to a level of importance substantially above her talent.

Carlton may have started favourites because they didn't finish that far behind Fremantle and North last season (finished 5-1 with a percentage higher than Fremantle's) and were able to improve their midfield with the recruitment of O'Dea from Melbourne. Also they expected Presparkis to improve further in her third season and Harris to be a force up forward.

It's hard to determine who should be favourites because last season was cut short, Carlton didn't play Fremantle last season (due to play in the final round at Docklands) and so nobody knows if they are as good or better than the Dockers.

Some people may think the Dockers are a little over rated because they didn't play Melbourne or Carlton from their conference last season and only played two games outside of WA, squeaking home against St Kilda by a point in the final minute and beating a very poor Bulldogs who had some injury problems.

Others may think North are a little over rated because we played in the weaker conference and lost to the third best team in the stronger conference and only just snuck home against the fourth best team in the final.

Personally I don't think there is a clear cut favourite, they are four or five very good teams this season who will think they are a genuine chance of winning the premiership, Fremantle, North Melbourne, Carlton, Collingwood and maybe Melbourne.

Melbourne's prospects are interesting - also GWS'. The whole conference carry-on has made it hard to assess relative merit across the league. It will also be interesting to see if COVID restrictions pre-season (and not ruling out in season) result in any noticeable difference between the states.

btw pleased to check and see our game is on FTA this Sunday. Hoping for the same in R2 after the date change made it impossible for me to be there in person as I'd planned :sad face

You should do it, but make sure you buy tickets online first. I don’t think they are available at the ground.

I’ll definitely think about it lol

Adelaide look to be back to their best. Erin Phillips is a star.
I had kind of forgotten about them - and seems like plenty had - but with Phillips and Randall back (and Marinoff free to play) Crows belong in any conversation about the most likely high performing teams this season.

By far the most natural footballer in the women's game. The competition is so much richer for her part in it.

Disagree. Garner and Prespakis are more natural players.

Philips is a gun with rare talent sure, but relies on her athleticism, experience and burning competitiveness to really get her over the line.

Another R2 shuffle - Cats now play Pies on Saturday at Vic Park while Suns play the Lions. Bad luck for any Suns fans who bought tickets they can't use/didn't get a chance to buy tickets for the game they will now be playing, but otherwise a minimal change. Don't think Pies will be sorry to get an eary crack at the Cats after last week.

Anyway, no change for us which is all that really matters.
