Strategy AFLW post season Trade, FA & Draft Talk 2024

Remove this Banner Ad

Still a ways to go hopefully in our season, but first media reports of post season trade talk so I'll use this thread to keep 2024 post season list activity discussion separate from the list management thread with contracts etc which I'm aiming to maintain across seasons..

Hawthorn and Richmond are among the sides to have flagged an interest in Melbourne forward Georgia Gall, though the Demons are still hoping to retain the promising youngster.

St Kilda and Collingwood are chasing Hawthorn’s former top 10 pick Charlotte Baskaran, while the Giants are confident of luring Bulldogs defender Eleanor Brown to New South Wales.

Don't know who is available, we desperately need a big defender. Richardson bats out of her weight class, and got found out in finals. Sherpa is too short but battles hard.

The alternative is we put Wales at CHB

There's someone even more obvious than Wales that they'll have to make a decision on about which position she'll play next season.

Mac Eardley?
She may have been recruited as a key back, she always seemed to be easily pushed around though.

Lou Stevenson is another decent option, but age will limit her

Yeah, but she spent her first 2 years as a key back learning on all the top opponents. It's not as easy as going forward imo, but she did OK there given the shift so be interesting how they solve that.

Our defense did work well this year, far exceeded expectations but height was always an issue and teams running over top which was highlighted in last 2 games.

What do we think will happen with the 8-9 depth players in squad? I'm not sure anyone will retire (Kashy next year imo) and need to make at least 2 changes going into draft?

Sophie Butterworth - they'll wait to see her develop and its a key position.
Charlotte Baskaran - top mid not getting a game, could be a trade target for other clubs.
Haley McLaughlin - got game time this year but may been seen as another projected player to take over on wing or forward
Kristy Stratton - lost her spot due to injury and different playstyle (and Breed's improvement). I think too important to let go, valuable mid or fwd.
Bridget Deed - Midfield depth that hasn't played a lot. On the bubble.
Tahlia Fellows/Sophie Locke - Fact we can combine these two probably says we have too much depth here at small forward so expecting at least one to be moved on.
Casey Dumont - was a cat b cheap rookie move, does she keep playing or stick with soccer?

Not sure if you've seen the contract thread here, but Kashy has a contract until 2026.

Of the players out of contract, you would think the delisting/trades will be 2-4 of Dumont (not sure if she's an extra Cat B-style spot though so doesn't count in your list numbers, do you know Liam AFLW nuff ?), Deed, Fellows, Locke and Baskaran.

Of the remaining uncontracted players, Kempy has played every game and should at least get another year, as would Stephenson who has had a fairly handy year as backup true utility wherever needed. Breed would already have had a multi year contract in front of her if I was Mitch Cashion.

Dumont and Deed are delisted

Baskaran is being linked to a couple clubs for potential trade to Coll/St K?

Fellows is the only other 1 who could be delisted if we need to make room on our list imo

Thanks for the info of Kashy. Most of those on expiring deals seem straightforward. Agree about Kempy and Stephenson. With Eardley a forward, really only 7 defenders on the list which is quite interesting to think about given 2 of them started last season ('23) in our midfield! Probably means Stone will keep covering there.

I'm not actually sure how the "Cat B" system or equivalent entirely works in AFLW. I think McDonagh was initially on the list that way?

Outside of a trade, I agree with Davo that Fellows may be the only other delistment if they want a roster spot.

Rookies count on the list of 30 so we now have 2 open list spots

currently off contract are Breed, Fellows, Baskaran, Stephenson, Kemp, Locke
You keep breed Stephenson Kemp for sure. Fellows tries hard but is unfortunately in between the levels so I think she goes. Would rather keep Locke she can tackle and hit the scoreboard. Baskaran i simply don’t see that we get enough impact and she hardly got a game.
Maybe a fresh start works for both parties and hopefully we could get something decent for her. We need a KPD desperately and a deep small forward who pressures and kicks goals.

The small forward/forward pocket is almost obsolete in women's footy. It's effectively a position to rest a player when needed

Not sure on that MM, a fast tricky forward that can play a bit higher and bolt back could work. Our tall forwards got challenged in the air during the finals and the ball came to ground a lot with an opportunity for a speedster to crumb a score. Keen to see who they target and I am sure Daniel and Samuel will put their heads together and come up with a plan. Been a great season and thinking we aren’t far off the others …..except the Roos.
That’s our next step.

What's our best 5 up front look like this year? It's some formation with Aine - Eardley - Hipwell - Gilroy - Bodey

We really only had 1 small forward (Bodey) and she also played higher up the ground, as did Gilroy.

You could probably add up the game time of Fellows/Locke/McLaughlin/Stratton and say that was our backup small too, though I'd say in their Best 21 they'd have Sheriff in that role off the bench and then rotate other mids as needed as well (Vukic covering talls which is why she was so important to structure even if hardly getting big game time).

Hipwell is all potential and no delivery someone will pay massive overs for her I would trade her and balance it out better. Eardley Aine are fine as keys,
Bodey and Gilroy as mediums who get up the ground and add a pressure forward and that’s the best mix. Butterworth looks likely as well. We need a KPD like Biddell from the crows she’s a star and a small forward like Alice o Laughlin and we are set

Hawks linked to Tayla Harris, but do we need her?

Stephenson plays the same role and is more versatile and costs less.

Harris also has a massive ego which I think would be disruptive for the hawks

Don't like how it makes the forward line more crowded and impacts playing time of Hipwell, Vukic and Butterworth if trying to fit everyone in there.

Certainly quality when fit so no problems there. Also manages to make certain demographics pissed off just by existing, so that'd be entertaining.

She's also kicked a grand total of 4 goals in her last 14 AFLW matches.

Must be better options out there than a player who would be on her 4th team and past her best?

Fairly certain Bask was a mad Pies supporter growing up.
Would love to keep her, though!

Her partner plays for the pies in the VFL too.

From.my chats with her, she grew up supporting Collingwood, but wasn't a fanatic by any means. It was just "her team"

She's a smart girl, she will go where she thinks her career will benefit. It's up to the club, and specifically Dan Webster, to sell her on where her career can go at the hawks

Baskaran has requested a trade to St kilda, Breed is attracting rival interest (and, as a reminder, moved back temporarily to Adelaide in the offseason last year), and Adelaide defender Najwa Allen is requesting a trade to Hawthorn.

Hawthorn is expected to trade for Allen and remains in the hunt for uncontracted Melbourne superstar Tayla Harris, who is still weighing up her future amid interest from both the Hawks and Collingwood.

The Hawks currently have picks No.14, 32, 50 and 68 to play with in the upcoming Trade Period, which begins on Thursday, but could also amass more selections as a result of players heading elsewhere.

The club remains in a fight to retain uncontracted midfielder Mattea Breed amid rival interest, while former top 10 pick Charlotte Baskaran has already requested a trade to St Kilda.
