I love the pick. Providing netball doesn’t become a priority and she does not have go home issues.

We need an athletic key defender. The Irish lass is a possible, but most of our tall defenders are third tall rather than keys.

We need players that can genuinely open up things by run and by foot. There were some fantastic 25+ disposal types after our pick and I find it staggering that we went for a key defender that isn't odds on to break the mould.

Scholz is a utility. Strong mark and quick for her size. We will be able to utilise her in a lot of positions.

Carlton, who held pick No.6, wasn't going to let Fish slide, but Sydney got in one selection ahead of them. This meant that talented tall defender Poppy Scholz shot up the ranks to land with the Blues.

Things were a little simpler for West Coast, who was always going to select tough midfielder/forward Lucia Painter from country Victoria, so pick No.7 was straightforward.

The Crows cashed in on India Rasheed's slide to pick 13

The media/scouts are being polite, but we reached. They think the Eagles and Dogs reached a bit too, but the Eagles did so believing they can tidy up Painter's injury record and gain a little speed and endurance along the way... I agree.

Go home factor must have been a concern for Rasheed, but she doesn't separate herself from the other two candidates really despite a laser left boot. I really think we've made a strange call considering the draft pool and what was available to us.

In the AFL M, you're not taking key defenders in the top 10 anymore unless they can decently run, significantly accumulate the footy, and use it well. I'm not sold on enough of that with Scholz, and believe she arguably should have gone outside the top 10 (just), but she's not alone there.

Pre-draft Eliza O'Reilly said we were after Fish or Scholz. She said whichever one was still there, they would be a bargain. She seems to be the AFLW's Twomey so I'm going to go with that.
