He played a lot of VFL over the years, in nearly all games he got killed by VFL level ruckmen but was good at ground level.

Yes and we didn't exactly have any other ruckmen to replace him in the VFL during that time. This year they could have done it with Smit playing ruck, but unfortunately for Begg, he got injured.

Gee, with Cox out for significant periods in the last 2 years (ruptured spleen and MCL), Cameron out for periods in 2023, McStay out with an MCL for the best part of a year, and us having to rely on Frampton rucking at times …

… I can’t imagine that a developing ruckmen would get much better opportunities than that? It wouldn’t have boded well for him.

Pretty sure he was also on the injury list last season when we had no Cameron or Cox. Because we also had no Begg to fall back on.

Injuries have been his undoing unfortunately. Never really got the chance when opportunities would have been there.

Agree, he always looked puffed out to me.

He was working through his own injury issues, or recently returning from them, when most of those opportunities arose.

Needed to stay on the park this year to stake a claim, knee injury curtailed that. Good luck to him.

I thought it was a foot injury this year?

I remember last year when we had Cox and Cameron out, and at a press conference a journo asked Fly whether that would provide an opportunity for Begg?

Fly mentioned that it wouldn’t because he believed in setting players up for success and Begg wasn’t yet ready.

I noted at the time that a player who had previously been ‘ready’ (Begg had played games) now wasn’t considered ready.

That wouldn’t have been Steene.

Disappointed for the kid - had to play an unsuitable role for his entire career filling in for injured Rucks. Never given time to prove himself in a more suitable position to exploit his strengths.

I suspect his delisting signals Condon is almost a certainty to join us.

That wouldn’t have been Steene.

It was Steene who injured his toe, Begg his knee.
