It's been a while since I've had a go at creating a portfolio so I thought I'd fire up MS Paint once again & share some unusual creations. Recently I have been looking into the history of Australian aviation & figured I might having a go at creating some football teams out of various local airlines, taking their company logos/colours & tail-fin liveries into account. Some of these colour combinations have created some unorthodox-looking jumpers, that's for sure. Nonetheless, it has been a fun little time-waster!

I have 14 teams in this comp, with maybe some expansion teams coming in the future.

Air Nauru
Air New Zealand
Air Niugini
Alliance Airlines
Ansett Australia
Australian Airlines
Jetstar Airways
OzJet
Qantas
Regional Express
Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia
Tiger Airways
Toll Aviation
Virgin Australia

AIR NAURU Frigatebirds

First cab off the rank is central Pacific Island airline, Air Nauru, which features a jumper with a simple design derived from the flag of the Republic of Nauru, which is a colour scheme also used by Air Nauru on its planes. The team's mascot is the national bird of Nauru, the Frigatebird, which appears on the Nauru state coat of arms.

AIR NEW ZEALAND Pacific Waves

ONExONe.png

Following on from our flight to Nauru we now stop off in New Zealand with the "Pacific Waves" club. For this design I have a retro look, keeping the colour scheme used by the airline during the 90's (in fact I have gone for a retro look for many of these designs). The team's mascot comes from the Pacific Wave livery that the airline was using around that time.

AIR NIUGINI Kumuls

Next up we have Air Niugini, the flag carrying airline of PNG, which has a jumper with a sash design that utilises a colour scheme not usually seen in Australian football. The team's mascot, the Kumul, was a simple one, being the bird featured not only on Air Niugini's company logo, but also the flag of PNG. By all means one of the most colourful teams in the comp.

ALLIANCE AIRLINES Allies

Regional airline Alliance are next with this primarily yellow strip that invokes some 80's West Coast Eagles vibes. A lot of airlines from this part of the world tend to use a blue & yellow colour scheme, so to stand this team out I have made yellow a focal point of the jumper, whilst incorporating Alliance's company logo. The team's mascot was a simple enough one to come up with, and a name we've seen used before in footy.

ANSETT AUSTRALIA Axemen

TfW3WWX.png

A blast from the past what with Ansett Australia, a team which hits the field with a two-tone jumper based off of their company logo. After a bit of a think about the team's name I have settled on the name "Axemen", which was the very first occupation held by the airline's founder, Reg Ansett. Although its uncommon for teams to wear white shorts at home & away, in this case I just feel that it somehow works.

AUSTRALIAN AIRLINES Aviators

Following on we have another former airline in Australian Airlines, which was one of Australia's biggest passenger airlines in their own right up until 1992. I have come up a jumper with strong NM vibes to it, which is in keeping with Australian Airlines branding. The team's mascot is a little generic, as I have decided to give the 'Kangaroo' nickname to another team in this comp, yet to be featured.

JETSTAR AIRWAYS Jetsetters

3i59N3L.png

Next up it's everybody's least favourite budget airline, Jetstar. The "Jetsetters" play with a jumper based around the company's star emblem, comprised of the company's unique colour combo of orange, black & silver. As a result we have something resembling a modern-day GWS jumper.

OZJET Magpies

Next team on the list is Paul Stoddart's OzJet airline whose jumper takes a lot of inspiration from the blue diagonal panel & chequered flag motif painted on on the sides of the OzJet fleet. The team's mascot is the Magpies, named due to the fact that former Minardi F1 team owner, Paul Stoddart, was a diehard Collingwood supporter. And so, with all this we have somehow come up with a team which plays in colours similar to those of Port Power, yet is called the Magpies.

QANTAS Flying Kangaroos

I92emk6.png

It's Australia's most famous & successful airline, QANTAS, coming in next with their traditional red & white colour combination. As expected the teams jumper design & mascot are influenced by the company's "Flying Kangaroo" logo which has been seen on QANTAS tali-fins for decades. I have chosen to use the old-school kangaroo with this design, as I favour it over the modern day logo.

REGIONAL EXPRESS Rovers

LpEg7nv.png

One of the lesser-known sides, regional passenger airline Regional Express adopt the Rovers moniker & a primarily orange & blue jumper which incorporates the airline's tail-fin design. The rovers name is derived from both the playing position & the fact that "REX" serves as a rover of the skies for people in regional communities.

I like the concept, but feel you could do a bit more with some of the earlier designs. The latest ones are getting more daring, though :) look forward to more!
Thanks mate. Yeah, I am by no means a quality graphic designer. I just like to have a bit of a muck around on MS Paint every now & then!

Here are a few that I have put together. The first three are current airlines and the last three are former airlines.
r9AwOzE.jpg

The first one is Air New Zealand. There modern airplanes are now black with the silver fern on it. So they will be the Silver Ferns.
The second one is Qantas. It has the modern Kangaroo logo and silver borders. They will be the Spirits because they are the Spirit of Australia. It is also Qantas' 100 year which would be on the jumper. The jumpers also have the vintage flying Kangaroo on it, like the planes do.
The third one is Virgin Australia. All of Virgin Australias modern airplanes have the flying girl on the plane. sort of like an angle. So they are the angles.

The fourth one is Australian Airlines, the former budget class airline owned by Qantas. It was around in the early 2000's.
The fifth one is Compass Airlines. Compass was one of the first new airlines to take on Qantas and Ansett.
The sixth one is East-West Airlines. East-West Airlines is sort of like the National Party to Ansett being the Liberal Party. They sort of were together but they weren't.

Beautiful stuff Wizard. Love what you've done with the rebooted Australian Airlines colour scheme. That jumper really pops. I also like the silver collar on the QANTAS jumper, gives them a really elite look.

ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE OF AUSTRALIA Flying Doctors

bLRsrbY.png

Following on from WW's additions we have the first & only non-profit organisation competing in the league, the famous Australian air medical service, the Flying Doctor, which competes in a strip derived once again from its plane liveries. The team's mascot was, of course, a no-brainer.

TIGER AIRWAYS Air Tigers

4nEMPro.png

I'm back after a few days with the next team that has probably my favourite jumper of all, Tiger Airways. Tiger comes with a jumper based off the tiger stripes which feature on their planes tailfins & engines. Rather than name the team the Tigers, which would be the obvious choice, I have decided to call em the "Air Tigers" which adds an aviation theme to the team's name.

TOLL AVIATION Freighters

kYcLPIC.png

Following on from my personal favourite creation is possibly my least favourite getup, this time it's Australia's largest air-postal & haulage service, Toll. Typically Toll's jumpers come with a high-vis colour scheme which borrows from Toll branding, with a white motif often seen on the company's truck tarps making up the main design element. The team mascot makes reference to Toll's primary industry. Definitely the kookiest colour combo we've seen so far.
