Not a decimated Richmond but a team that North Melbourne (of the past) style wanders into the game with their guard down.

None of those coaches got the team anywhere near competitive, which means building over a period of time a team that can win consistently. Unfortunately because of list decisions that will take quite some time and the coaching at the moment reflects that.

Why didn't Clarkson take Dawson off Wright? Because for Wil yesterday was about a learning experience. There are many decisions being made every week that are about making players better long term not doing damage control on the scoreboard in the short term.

We should be pleased that's happening because it means the club hierarchy is giving the coach the confidence to build properly rather than focus on self-preservation.

Agree entirely ... my two bobs worth:

(1) The fact that the coach backed him in will do wonders for his confidence that he belongs at the level (as compared to the psychological impact of being moved off Wright) - and lets be honest - four goals from Wright in a game where we conceded 60+ I50s is actually pretty good!
(2) the benefit of the 120 mins he got playing on Wright is worth multiples of what he might get at training given we have no player anywhere near Wright as a run 'n jump 6'8 beanpole (nor would he probably see anyone like that in the Magoos either); his future will be take on the big tall bulls ... he has to start somewhere
(3) The coaches want Comben freed up to intercept given he's the only one we have ... having him as a lock-down on Wright takes away that function to a large extent.

He's a stubborn bastard. Some on here may be throwing in the towel but big Al isn't close. Time will tell and other such cliches but if you squint you can see the outlines of something pretty good. When Wardlaw is fit enough to play most of the game...95 out of 125 minutes yesterday. Inch that up to 110..

Can only conclude that the players we need most to believe...actually do believe. LDU isn't playing like someone who wants to go. He's playing like someone trying desperately to lift and lead a team of kids.

Mate, can you give us a little insight before you go on what it's like to be coached by Alastair Clarkson?

"Yeah, he's pretty special. He just gives you that confidence. If he sees something in you, you know it's real. So it gives a player real confidence that if he's saying you can do this or that's part of your game, you really believe in yourself.

And there's little tricks to the trade. You're like, I would have loved to have known him about 10 years ago. He sees the game really well. He's a guru with that sort of stuff. And he has an ability to connect with players and get the best out of you. So it really works out how you receive feedback the best and he'll give that. So you obviously don't want to get caught on the other side either, but he's a passionate man. He's a great coach and we're pretty lucky to have him."
