Brisbane Lion Albert Proud faces assault charge
February 20th, 2009

BRISBANE Lion Albert Proud is expected to plead guilty to assault charges when he appears in a Gold Coast court next month.
The 20-year-old appeared in court briefly this morning accused of a glass-throwing incident at a Surfers Paradise bar in January last year.
Proud intended to plead guilty to the charges this morning but the prosecution asked for an adjournment in order to speak to the alleged victim about possible compensation.
It is alleged the woman suffered a cut on her eye lid.
Proud will reappear in Southport Magistrates Court on March 12.

THE BRISBANE Lions have lifted a club-imposed suspension on midfielder Albert Proud in selecting their initial squad for Friday night's NAB Cup quarter-final against Essendon.
Proud, 20, was suspended indefinitely by the Lions after he was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm earlier this month.
Completing his best-ever pre-season before he was disciplined, Proud was also forced out of the Indigenous All-Stars squad that played Adelaide on February 7.
The Lions said in statement at the time that Proud had been suspended from the club, but didn't reveal how long for.

Lion Albert Proud to play despite pending court action

THE Brisbane Lions have lifted a suspension on midfielder Albert Proud and he is poised to make a comeback in tomorrow night's NAB Cup game against Essendon at Telstra Dome. Proud has been fined an undisclosed amount by the Lions over a January 31 incident at a Gold Coast bar in which police said he threw a glass at a 23-year-old woman, requiring stitches to a cut above her eye.

A lawyer for Proud told the Southport Magistrate's Court this week that the Lions midfielder planned to plead guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' jail.

The case was adjourned until March 12.

Lions chief executive Michael Bowers said last night the AFL had been presented by the club with its facts surrounding his actions after concluding an internal investigation.

Proud was yesterday named in a 29-man squad, which will be reduced to 24 players on game night, and a club statement said he had been disciplined in accordance with club code of conduct provisions.

"We are aware it's going to go before the courts and the court will determine what action should be taken - what we are talking about is what the club, in accordance with its values and player rules, deems appropriate," Bowers said.

"We have been in touch with the AFL.

"It's a co-operative process to make sure the penalty makes sense.

"He has missed already two games through that suspension, the very important Indigenous (All-Stars) game as well as the (NAB Cup) game against St Kilda."

The Courier-Mail was unsuccessful last night in seeking comment from the AFL on whether it supported Brisbane's decision to lift the suspension.

The Lions management evidently is confident public support will not be lost by their lifting of a suspension on a player facing court sentencing over an incident in which a woman was injured.

Proud provides Brisbane with additional midfield endurance because Jared Brennan, Travis Johnstone and Michael Rischitelli have been left out of the team that beat St Kilda.

Voss said the time was right to reactivate young forward Albert Proud who had been suspended by the club for allegedly throwing a bottle in a Gold Coast bar which struck a woman in the face.Proud, said Voss, was extremely contrite and had knuckled down at training over the past three weeks and deserved his selection to take on the Bombers.
"The club completed what we needed to do and there was a point where we needed to get him going again and we thought this was the appropriate time," Voss said.

Determined Proud earns recall for Lions
By Jennifer Witham
7:36 PM Thu 26 February, 2009

BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss says the determined attitude of Albert Proud this pre-season influenced the young midfielder's recall to the senior side after a two-week in-house suspension.

The 20-year-old was banned from playing in both the Qantas Indigenous All Stars v Adelaide match and the first round of the NAB Cup after being charged with assault after an incident in a Gold Coast bar in January.

But the third-year Lion will now face Essendon this Friday night at Telstra Dome in the quarter-final clash after the club decided he was ready to return.

"We've completed what we needed to do and he's been training with us for a little bit now," Voss said in Melbourne on Thursday night.

"We deemed that we'd gone as far as we needed to go and that's where we've come to."

Voss said the left-footed Queenslander was remorseful for his actions that are yet to be dealt with in a criminal court.

"I don't think he's been on top of the world, to put it that way, but he's obviously aware of what's happened," he said.

"What we're very impressed with is the way the way he's gone about his business. He's really stepped up over the pre-season and at some point there was going to be a point where we needed to get him going again and we thought this was the appropriate time."

Ad he's not a pushover either. Basically said (in a diplomatic way) "its our club, we decided the appropriate sanction and now he's back... move on".

Round 2 NAB Cup vs Essendon

Two players who stood out in the loss were defender Josh Drummond and midfielder Albert Proud.

Voss said Proud gave the Lions a spark with his hard work at the stoppages.

Albert Proud has been named in the Brisbane Lions team to tackle Richmond in Friday night's AFL practice match on the Gold Coast - despite being set to appear in court on the tourist strip for an assault charge.
Proud's case at Southport Magistrates Court was last month adjourned until Thursday - barely 24 hours before the Lions' much anticipated showdown with Ben Cousins' Tigers at Carrara.
A lawyer for Proud last month told the Southport Magistrates Court that the Lions midfielder planned to plead guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' jail.

Police said Proud threw a glass at a 23-year-old woman who required stitches to a cut above her eye.
The Lions lifted the suspension in order for Proud to play the NAB Cup quarterfinal against Essendon on February 27.
Proud was among the Lions' best in the loss to the Bombers and again stood tall in their shock practice match defeat at the hands of Melbourne in Cairns last Friday night.

Proud was expected to be sentenced when he faced the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Brian Kilmartin adjourned sentencing until Apirl as the facts of the case were disputed.
Police say the footballer was seen swinging his right arm towards the woman while holding a glass.
Proud's lawyer said his client had not intended to hurt the 23-year-old, whose injury required four stitches.

Adrian Fletcher

Had a fantastic pre-season and increased his endurance. He’s a hard ball winner and all he needs is an opportunity. Has a fantastic attitude.

Lions midfielder Albert Proud was also selected in the senior side after collecting 40 disposals for the Lions Reserves side last weekend in an AFLQ practice match against the Western Magpies.

After arguably the most productive pre-season campaign of his three-year career, Proud is set to line up for his 10th senior match with the Club.

Re: Albert Proud

Impressed me last night agin the Blues. Not only much more pro-active than previous games, but seemed far more at home. Like he finally believes he belongs. Certainly brings some aggression to the contest. Worth his spot in the team, and perservering with.
