There will be low permanent stands there.

Or do you want to stand?

I'd prefer to stand, but rn I'd take anything! Been standing there since I was a kid, and the last two years have sucked standing in the pocket.

We tried to be on the outer this season but it was horrible, particularly for my uncle who's in his late 70s and would prefer to sit but couldn't see over the fence.

And there is more to come that Koch said he will be announcing at next year's AGM.

They have some genuinely big off field plans that will set up the future of the club forever.

I did congratulate Richo on the financial results as a but of a peace offering after grilling him about member control (and wanted to do the same for Koch but he was pretty swamped).

Richo smirked and said "yeah but none cares about that" obviously referencing the frustration about on field results.

I was sure to tell him that I care. This stuff is super important for the long term of the club and for the club my kids and grand kids will support.

I think it is important for them to understand that we aren't just endlessly critical. Credit where it is due, the off field stuff is genuinely very impressive.

Fair call & agree it's very important & in that regard they've done an excellent job.

The $17 million grant over four years will contribute to delivering the club’s stage 4 plans, which includes world-class facilities for the club’s AFLW team, and new grandstands to increase the oval’s capacity to AFL match day standard.
.....

Underpinning this next stage of the $35 million transformation is both the club's strategic vision and growth objectives, and importantly the needs of the broader community.

So that is $20m the state government will pump into Alberton since 2021, which is also the amount they will give the crows over the next few years for Thebby.

So the other $18mil we will put in, will come from cashflow generated from profits, and probably borrow $8mil-$10mil to finish it all off.

AFLW has been such a money making/funding scam by the AFL.
Money making, sure. The governments know full well clubs are using parts of it (in some cases most) for facilities that will also benefit the guys, but see the votes in being pro-Women's sports. Really I don't see an issue with it. If it encourages more girls to take up / stay in sports, that's a good thing, despite any side benefit to the guys. The only annoying part is Port missed out on the gravy train for years, by joining so late.

Preseason and gather round would be the only suitable AFL games and Gather round wouldn't involve us.
Would rather not have other clubs on our ground for gather round. 1 pre-season game at Alberton should be a tradition.

Cause of our location ?

Alberton has no location appeal for Gather Round I'd still imagine they'll put their hand up for it when it's all complete.

I know people have this romance for Alberton, but playing a Port AFL game for points at Alberton would be lunacy when you'd be stopping potentially 35 to 40 thousand people from attending it makes no sense at all.

It does if we make decent money out of it, Port game or no, but the maths is more... complicated if we're playing.

Just heard part of interview with Minister for Sport Katrine Hildyard, on AA sports show and she was a gushing Port supporter and gushing supporter of women's sport.

Then Wayne Phillips read out some texts from whingeing crowies about Port always getting hand outs and where is the crows grants. Had to laugh - the crowies will get what Port get from the state and federal government and they will get $11+m from the West Torrens council and I reckon Port will be lucky to get $1.5m all up from Port Adelaide Enfield Council.

There was a presser, the video will be somewhere online, but here is the governments media release.

The State Government will invest $17 million over four years to help deliver Stage 4 of the redevelopment, which includes new state-of-the-art facilities for the club's AFLW team and a new grandstand to increase the oval’s capacity to AFL match day standard.

The next stage of the redevelopment includes:

* A third heritage inspired grandstand, increasing the seated capacity to 6,000 and overall capacity to over 10,000 to cater for AFLW, SANFL and SANFLW home games, and AFL pre-season games.

* AFLW player changeroom and coaching administration facilities.

* High-performance athlete wellness and recovery facilities, which will also be available for community use.

* A STEM learning centre, and education and conferences spaces for community programs and the Port Adelaide Academy of Sport.

* A new Port Adelaide Bowling Club facility with synthetic green and clubrooms.

* A flexible learning and event space for club and community access.

The Alberton Oval redevelopment features world-class AFL and AFLW playing and training facilities for the Port Adelaide Football Club, and incorporates multi-use community sport and recreation facilities that can be utilised by the people of the western suburbs.

These include junior basketball, junior soccer, lawn bowls, community events and passive recreation and community space.

The inclusion of state-of-the-art AFLW facilities at Alberton builds on the Malinauskas Labor Government’s $18 million grant program for dedicated female sporting facilities and improvements to grow female participation.

Oh looky here from a month ago.

A western suburbs council will deliver a staggering $14m operating deficit for the 2023-24 financial year, with a multimillion-dollar investment in a new home for the Crows contributing to more than half of the budget blowout.

It comes despite West Torrens Council projecting a $4.25m operating surplus just a few months earlier.

West Torrens said the large budget discrepancy was the result of “some one-off/extraordinary items”, including an $11.26m contribution towards the new Adelaide Football Club headquarters – resulting in a $10.8m budget overspend, documents show.

A West Torrens spokesperson said council had already committed $9.47m to upgrade the Thebarton Oval Precinct but then decided to increase that funding to $11.26m after entering into lease negotiations with the Adelaide Football Club.

I’d rather Alberton to Mt Barker.

We might be aiming to piss off Norwood and the SANFL.

Alberton Oval capacity to be increased after receiving $17 million in funding

Government funding for Port Adelaide’s home at Alberton Oval could see it emerge as a future venue for Gather Round fixtures, as the Power look to cash in on their impressive AFLW crowds.

Alberton Oval could emerge as a future Gather Round venue with Port Adelaide chief executive Matthew Richardson saying new State Government funding could have the venue’s capacity at up to 18,000 for “major events”.
.....

As part of Tuesday’s announcement, the Power said the $17m grant – over four years – would also now feature the installation of terraced seating around the eastern boundary fence at Alberton Oval. The extra 1500 terraced seats are part of the Power’s plans to grow AFLW games at Alberton Oval, after the club had the second highest attendances in the competition in 2024.

But this could lead to even bigger events at Alberton once the fourth stage of redevelopment is fully finished.
“The increased seating capacity in the first stage of around 1500 and overall our seated capacity will be increased to around 7500 with total capacity aimed at 12,000,” Richardson said.

“But with the flexibility that we have on the eastern side with the carparks we could bring in big temporary stands so for major events we could get up to 15,000 to 18,000 here at Alberton in the future. “Our vision was for Alberton Oval to be the best boutique AFL/AFLW venue in the country and I think we saw with the growth of AFLW games here last season our last two games here we had 5000 people.

“It (Gather Round) certainly is something for the future, I think once we get all of the redevelopment finished. “The great thing about Alberton Oval is the playing surface is exactly the same size as Adelaide Oval and there are no facilities that need to be brought in. “So it would certainly be a goal for the future for Alberton Oval to be used in that opportunity.” Construction on the terraced seating on the eastern side and the AFLW changeroom and coaching admin facilities being integrated into the MG High Performance Centre will begin this year.

Planning for the third grandstand on the bowling club site is set to commence in 2026.

And Alberton has no potentially litigious boundary wall.

The capacity isn’t going to be enough to have afl games featuring port at Alberton. But it’s plenty for what it’s going to be used for.

It’s going to be a great venue for pre season AFL games, AFLW, SANFL, and possibly a gather round game similar to Norwood or Mt Barker.

Really excited by the final planned upgrades to AO. This will now leave the club with the thorny question of naming at least two new structures. Firstly the ladies upgrade will be part of the MG High Performance Centre (or Allan Scott building), so no need for any name.
The next two are tricky as should we go old Port Adelaide (Magpies) or new Port Adelaide (the Power), so let’s say we go new Port as I think we have covered all of our greats from old Port.
The bowling green stand - The Travis Boak Stand - a captain & our highest game tally player with the eastern terrace stand being (you can now shoot me down) - The Cornes’ Brother Stand.
Just my two cents worth.
