Sorry to intrude but Silva is a great pick up. Totally agree with Silent Alarm and gungho posts of him.
Surely there is a decent Indian restaurant on Lygon St and the fact that he can legally catch pinkies half the size he would be able to in WA, I assume he might be happy to move.

It might make Friday Night footy a bit more interesting with him in the side;).

I'm not sure you guys on here are appreciating how good this guy is.
Would be a walk up start at the dockers every day of the week if not for Ross Lyon's absolutely mind - blowingly bizarre strategy of picking Zac Dawson in front of him. You will not find a more courageous player - perhaps too much so for his own good in the Jonathan Brown mould. Pretty good kick, good decision maker, and very physical. The guy could (and has) kept Buddy and some of the other elite forwards in the comp quiet.
Why he has not played 100 games in the AFL is an odd combo of often being injured, often being suspended, and for some reason being on the outer with Ross.
Will be a cult hero for you guys.
I thought Silvagni was unbelievable in the games i saw of him this year and could not understand why he was being played in the WAFL.

Like for like with Jamison

Would rather we picked up WC Mitch Brown if we were looking to have a back up. At least he could play on the monster forwards and is a couple of years younger

What the club says: "We lost Michael Jamison and Zach Tuohy out of our defence and in the drafts we've brought in seven 18-year-olds, which includes Kym (LeBois) as one of our rookies, so we felt we needed to bring some maturity through the door, which is where Alex (Silvagni) fits in. He's a great character and a real workhorse and with 27 players with under 50 games' experience on our list we just needed to give those kids some support. We didn't see a lot of Andrew (Gallucci) this year but he came back after the break in fantastic condition, so we just felt we needed to give him an opportunity." - Stephen Silvagni, Carlton list manager

First reaction was ...... wtf

A few theories in order of most likely in my opinion:
1) NB have struggled down back and Alex would sure up our defense and ensure Jaksch is able to have a proper crack as a key forward and will give us a stronger magoos. Unlikely to be played in 1s but insurance against injuries to our established defense
2) Backup plan for Marchbank/coverage for Gorillas especially if Weitering has to go forward as well because McKay is not ready and they give up on Casboult.
3) Rowe will play forward as a Forward/Ruck as the 2 dedicated rucks will be scrapped and Alex provides coverage down back if the young fellows need protection during year.

Which theory do you subscribe to?

I get there may be some slight bias towards silva from me but he is miles better then Mitch Brown ever was, in fact Mitch browns only decent year was when he played on smalls and made a niche of that.

Silva >>>>> Brown

I reckon this may be a good strategy long-term.

It gives Macreadie and JGM the opportunity to work together at VFL level; find their niche and learn how to play to each others strengths. Simon White can then provide the necessary protection and can chop-out if need be.

From what I understand, Silvagni is at a similar level to Rowe and may even be better. It's possible the club is planning to use Silvagni in the 1st team to help Marchbank and Weitering develop. We can then use Rowe as a forward at VFL level; give our young kids a good target to kick to. Him along with Jones and Jaksch is a very potent VFL trio.

I think Weitering will move forward in time too, but for now, it's important he and Marchbank learn to play well together and Silvagni probably has more defensive nous than Rowe or White. He'll be able to provide better defensive instruction and tuition than those two can.

From there we experiment with the defensive structure, until we've got a good long-term combination. If all of JGM, Macreadie, Marchbank and Weitering can really solidify their games, we can eventually push one forward.

I doubt this is a case of nepsostism.

I'm not completely sold on the decision, but he's too good to be out of the afl and was delisted almost on a quirk (Ross Lyon, Freo rebuilding, even Barlow got the flick).

Pretty much any time you can pick up an afl player that isn't over the hill 'for free', you do it. He definitely played better football in 2016 than Wright did in 2015. And look at Wright this year.

No he's not Jamison but for pick 23 Rookie draft whose complaining?
I reckon he'll play quite a few senior games actually and surprise a few , a good mentor when needed in the NB too lets remember we have 4 very green talls in defence they'll need direction and nurturing .
Wise move I reckon, tough, courageous and has some ability.
Go Blues
