Eagles fans, would you take pick 8?
Id prefer not to trade him . He is a known quantity rather than pick 8 which could turn out a dud .

Gaff is an AA BnF , 5th in the Brownlow last year , Averages 30 possessions , one of the best runners in the game and missed 1 game his entire career after being KOed by Jonas .
I would take my chances at free agency unless a much better offer than 8 came up this year

Has Gaff indicated a desire to return to Victoria, is the question I suppose. I get what you're saying. He'd still be restricted FA next year though I'm assuming.

A trade for an inside mid rather than a pick would make more sense though, in an ideal world? You still have the spine to be very good, I would've thought - considering what a fit Naitanui brings to the table
No he hasn't it's just the OP and his obsession with trading .
Loosing priddis and Mitchell is going to be hard trading Gaff away for a draft pick would send us in a norf like spiral down the ladder

We weren't good enough with Naitanui, so we won't be good enough when he returns. Closer to good enough, but still not good enough. IMO our best midfield since the Judd/Cousins/Kerr era was in 2011/12 when we had Cox/NN in tandem and Shuey, Scott Selwood and Kerr combining in the centre. So we'll see how we go with whatever combo we start with in 2018. But that's an aside.

We've got inside mids and we've got outside mids, but what we're missing is star mids. Shuey is our best, and most outsiders would rate him a top 20 mid in the comp at best. Take our midfield and just one Kelly/Martin/Danger/JP Kennedy etc. to it and it improves significantly.

Replace Shuey with Merrett and it's a very familiar tale, frankly

Gaff possibly looking for a move has been raised on the Eagles board and isnt an unlikely scenario. Would Gaff leaving turn the Eagles into a Norths rebuild? Depends what else happens with trades, FA and draft moves and also what we get from our injured rucks and 2017 draftees next year. This year we got zero.

Finishing 12th or 13th next year?

And you reckon he will get $800k a year offers or higher?

Gaff is an extremely durable winger who has a huge tank and does exactly what is required of him. Scully got more than that a few years ago, with how player payments are Gaff would definitely be worth 800k a year.

Gaff has 7-8 more quality years of football in him and he misses once in a blue moon, he has scope to be the next player to 400 games.

You cant really use GWS or GCS examples unless they are going to GCS now. The Scully offer was ridiculous.

He's an AA and a B&F winner, Gaff gets 800k. A 2018 compo pick for them is much better than a first rounder this year; also, as an RFA if his offer isn't enough to net them a first round compo do you think they won't match it?

If they get an offer better than that, they'll do the deal now; but if they don't, he stays and goes as an RFA.

Clubs that match offers for players who want to leave get all the bad news they deserve.

If someone wants to go you let them go.

How will it be bad news? Should have Adelaide let Dangerfield go for peanuts? They would have received a late first rounder for Dangerfield had they not matched - but they did match and they got pick 9 and 28.

A club is within their rights to force a trade if they're not getting a players worth.

I'm surprised how little most on here rate Gaff. It's all well and good focusing on his negatives, tackle count and outside ball, but a side full of inside mids isn't making the big dance. He is easily in the top 5 in the competition for the position he plays, his running patterns are highly team orientated and even if he doesn't get the ball (which he does often) he creates space for others. In short, he is Elite for the role he plays.

His value will ultimately come down to a team who needs his style of play, for instance at Hawthorn we would value it super highly. We like a possession based game, and Smith on one wing is key to that. His running patterns create space for others. Gaff would excel in this game style.

Also, and Que. "it doesn't mean shit" brigade, he polled 21 Brownlow votes in 2016, finished 3rd in their B&F and was named in the All-Australian squad. Not the heights of 2015 AA, but how many of you have a wingman that can match that?

We've been linked with Gaff a few times over the past few years which I kind of understand given the Woosha connection.
While I rate him pretty highly he's not the type of player we should be targeting as we have Zaka who plays that role pretty well for us & Kobe Mutch in the reserves who looks like he'll be a good winger for us in the future.

If Shuey was on the table though I'd be all in! Would suit us perfectly but I don't see him going anywhere unfortunately.

I'd see Gaffs value being around 8-15 somewhere.

Over-simplification.
Players are professionals, who incidentally signed off on the current RFA rules. Whether they like it or not, they have no choice but to accept it. RFA has existed in sports overseas for decades, it doesn't seem to be a problem there at all.
Bryce Gibbs' situation is a reasonable example. Though the mechanism for him staying is different (contracted as opposed to matching a RFA offer), essentially the problem is the same (holding a player at your club who wants to play his footy somewhere else). It doesn't seem to have affected Bryce at all, his form has been really good.

Happy to be corrected...but I don't see too much bad news occurring given it has never actually happened

I would say a contracted player with 2 years contract is entirely different to a free agent, or a player out of contract (and even with 1 year to).

How often do we see players with multiple years of contract left be traded? Jordan Lewis last year is one, but Gaff isnt on his final contract before retirement I wouldnt think.
