Any danger of Channel 7 showing the ball?

I was frustrated all night with Channel 7's ability to show anything but live action but two incidents in the last quarter were especially of note.

A replay was being shown of either the interchange infringement or Hawthorn's reaction to it. At that stage there is seven points in it with 2 minutes to go. When they finally get back to the action, Riewoldt has the ball in his hand. But who's interested in seeing forwards take pack marks in tight games when you can watch a replay of guys sitting on the interchange bench?

Earlier in the quarter, they had a split screen showing BOTH coach's boxes with people doing nothing in particular. Back to live action and the ball has already been kicked into Hawthorn's forward line.

Note to Channel 7, when in doubt, show the footy. On second thought, just show the footy.

too much close focusing too

Remember those stimulus packages, we've all got big ****ing plasmas, zoom out, it was almost as if they were filming a soap opera tonight.

Terrible terrible coverage. Completely missed Jordan Lewis' behind.

I can't believe there isn't a channel that can get this right. Follow the ball and you can't go wrong. I don't want to see who is on phone to the coach, i don't want to see the emergency umpire telling two players bumping off the ball to 'calm down' or some random moron in the crowd. BUT if you feel the need to show it, don't cut to it whilst there is live play in progress.

Seven usually tend to show the action a few hours delayed, so not showing the actual football is generally what you'd expect - they're absolutely useless.

The close zoom on Lyon's face near the end of the last quarter was ridiculous, a good ten seconds just staring at his face.

The fact that friday nights are delayed is good enough reason that I don't watch it.

I flicked over a few times and it took me about a minute just to work out where the ball was cos they had some stupid angle in close-up that they refused to change for like ever. No idea what was happening 5 meters either side of the pack either cos they were in that tight.

Whoever the director was last night should be fired

watched blues v weagles last night. they showed about 5 minutes of an ambulance
in the carpark while the game was being played. so not just 7. also tired of watching players limp off the ground or getting a massage.

I just wish that they had a director who knew which cameras to choose and operators who knew how to zoom! It seems like they zoom in way to far during the play and when the ball is kicked or handballed it flys out of shot and then we go straght to a extra wide shot. It gives me a headache watching 7's coverage. There are so many times when the ball isnt even in frame!

How would you do it, El?

OK. I'll tell you WHY they do it like that then.

They go close when a player has the ball so you can see what he does with it, be it evading an opponent, being tackled, or a neat little lookaway handball.

Then when the ball is disposed of, they go wider to show where it is in the field of play, and where the players are in relation to it. Back close again once the ball reaches a contest, so you can actually see what's going on. Often when players are just kicking it to each other in defence, they just stay wider, so we can see where their opponents are.

Sometimes they go REALLY wide to that camera at the top of the stands to show where most players are in relation to the ball. It shows how each team is setup as the ball is moving. I find it distracting if both teams wear similar colours, as it's too difficult to pick them apart, but in contrasting colours it's quite effective.

Don't know about you, but nothing I hate more than being close in on a player, then going wide JUST before he gets tackled. When the ball is in dispute, you want to be close, when the ball is mid-air or being carried, you want to be wide.

That's what I see when I watch anyway. Replays however are another matter :)
