ANZ Stadium surface is a disgrace

Yeah, I get the impression the Swans are sick of GWS trying to use the Swans to promote them.

Not just GWS, the AFL themselves were hyjacking our games to push GWS at the beginning of the season.

Back on topic, I went onto the ground at the end of the game and the main things I noticed was the length of the grass (much longer than I thought it would be) and the amount of divots and deep ruts left in the ground. The soil seems very sandy just below the surface, I assume to aid drainage but I wonder if that's at the expense of stability?

In that case TAS you have my apologies.

If that is true that is insulting to the supporters who know the game. I for one find it degrading that it's presumed just because I go for an expansion team, the impression is I have NFI what a goal is.

I find it degrading you don't even know your clubs history. Maybe they should be putting some history lessons on the scoreboard instead for you vonn;)

The Swans were a Relocated Team, not an Expansion Team....

Haha oh shush you know what I mean Rob... they were offered relocation for the AFL's expansion... I was merely drawing parallel with other expansion clubs because I'm sure any non-vic club has to put up with that crap that they are a derp.

Surface played as well as it looked, i.e. terrible. Only watched the game in patches, but saw two players lose the footy while attempting a regulation run and bounce when it simply didn't come back to them, and any number of others slip over while nowhere near the ball. The AFL will not be pleased.

I also went out onto the ground for kick-to-kick after the game. The main thing I noticed was how hard the ground was under foot - it was rock solid!

I also noticed some small areas of the surface missing grass had been patched over with sand and spray painted green.

It is a disgrace that ground! AFL never again should be there!

I heard the Swans are locked in until 2015 to that stadium - fair dinkum.

Swans might have the majority of the support in Olympic Park games, but once they and their opponent step onto the field, it's basically a neutral game. Another joke in the supposed 'Home & Away' season? what a farce. and to think that the Swans have to play all home finals at the dump too.

multi-purpose re-configuration of stadia doesnt work. the yanks got in and out of the trend 2 decades ago. it affects the performance/experience for players & fans of all sports.

The poor surface is underneath the retractable stands moreso than the rugby league playing surface. I'm sure with the clout the AFL and CA has, those retractable stands will be scrapped eventually, but ANZ is still holding out hope of hosting a soccer world cup final.

Besides, when all is said and done i'm not convinced there are more injuries at ANZ. Even though its loose underfoot, it's not a hard surface.

The length of the grass was very surprising and I guess that's because that's the way rl like it .

All grounds use green coloured sand to fill in divots.

Do agree the surface was disgraceful as usual and letting people play kick to kick afterwards was stupid. Still, it was good fun. :D
