Are Hawthorn 2008 the worst cup winning team ever?

So Hawthorn were a good side in 2004?

THey weren't bottom. They had supporters urging them not to win a spoon too.

This' opposed to Carltank who's supporters actively urged their side to finish last.

Says a lot about the respective cultures methinks. When a foundation is built on shaky ground, crooked structures result.

Deep, huh?

LMFAO

You had twice as many Inside 50s and Centre Clearances as we did

Buddy Franklin and Sam Mitchell played absolutely shit house

Face it, you couldn't of played any better but we could've and if Buddy and Mitch had've had blinders then we would've thumped Geelong by over 100 points and we would've broken the record you set against Port Adelaide last year

You're a joke
And if Corey and Bartel had had blinders we would have won. And if Mooney and Ottens had nabbed those shots in the third quarter we would have won. Might I remind you that Mitchell and Franklin played well last time we played you and that was the time we won?

The final result wasn't down to you, it was down to us. We could've played a hell of a lot better, which we proved throughout the season. The gap between our best football and the football we played in the Grand Final is about the difference between Matthew Hayden and Habibul Bashar, in cricket terms.

Thanks for coming closest to answering my question, although you did deviate talking about supporters who didnt want the spoon etc.

Wrong. That was your best foootball. You came up against a team that wouldn't let you play any better. Kind of get stuck in your throat it seems..

You didn't play well - pressure does that. If you come up against that kind of pressure again, you'll do better, but the result will likely be the same. Your team doesn't handle it well.

This sour grapes crap is boring too. The fact is you aren't even bright enough to look at the team that beat you. It's not about the goals you missed. To beat you, we had to kick them at the other end. And we did. A lot.

You could've played a hell lot better?

That's why you dominated the Inside 50s and the Center Clearances? I don't think you can play much better then that?

You couldn't of played any better if you tried, you gave it your all but we were well beaten by a better team

Face it, albeit you missed shots, you still had goals gifted to you by the umpires, it evens itself out.

Regardless of what may of happened, we would've beaten Geelong.

And which game counts champ??? Turn up and play like a bunch of pussies on the only one that matters all year! Good on ya...

Hayden just put in a performance reminiscent of Geelong's Grand Final effort and notched up the impressive tally of 0 and 13 from his two innings. Unlike Geelong though, poor Hayden didnt have the rub of the green from the umpires to help him.

no he was not carried and at his age i am not sure anyone would want him now and yes his knee would be concidered on that and fair enough he has had treatment for his knee and thought he would not make it to GF and that it was bye byes but the treatment he had worked and he is thinking of playing on ! he was not carried he just played carefully !

You say that because youre a Hawks supporter and I cant blame you. Each to their own beliefs.

Incorrect. We didn't want a spoon in any of those years, especially the first one in 2002. However with the spoon came 1st pick in the draft so there is consolation.
Losing the game against Melbourne last year ensured we finished 2nd last but also got 1st pick. Stupid system but that was the way it worked and it was better for carlton to lose that game than win.
I would give up all 1st round drafts to have no spoons.

Face it - Geelong will always fold against a good team in finals.

Hawks were great - Cats were Cats.

And if Corey and Bartel had had blinders we would have won.

didn't perform on the big stage. hawks players did. hawks the better team.

And if Mooney and Ottens had nabbed those shots in the third quarter we would have won.

Hawks skills > Geelong skills - hawks the better team.

We could've played a hell of a lot better, which we proved throughout the season.

Hawks consisentcy and fitness > Geelong consistency and fitness - hawks the better team.

The final result wasn't down to you, it was down to us.

wrongzo.

Contenders but i'd still lean towards hawthorn
It would have to be Essendon 1897.

Because the media does pump out that every year is greater then the last.

therefore

Hawthorn08>Geelong07>West Coast06>Sydney05>Port Adelaide04>Brisbane03>Brisbane02>Brisbane01>Essendon00>Kangaroos99>Adelaide98>Adelaide97>North Melbourne96>Carlton95>West Coast94>Essendon93>West Coast92>Hawthorn91>Collingwood90>whatever is before my memory of the premiers.

Disagree 9/10 papers conceded Geelong 07 were superior with many going as far as dubbing Hawthorn as the Steven Bradberries of the AFL.

What are you doing up at this ungodly hour anyway?

Mmmmmmmmm, bradberries...

Let's be frank, this mob is absolute rubbish. Sure, they may have beaten us on the day. But to be honest Hawthorn are a 1/365 day team better than us, and it seems they got us on their day. Extremely lucky.

Yep the Hawks sure are lucky when it comes to beating Geelong (when it matters).

For further proof of this, why not visit the magnificent thread on your Geelong board.

"30 years torment at the hands of the Hawks".

A fantastic thread by an honest Geelong supporter. :thumbsu:

Unlike allot of other Geelong posters here SportsGirl, you still have yet to get over it. You are a pessimist, go get some counciling.

he said himself he thought of playing on when it came good ! it is fact i say but in saying that it is also fact he did say he would retire if we won the grand final in 08 but that was when his knee was giving him heaps ! and he did retire after thinking of playing on !
he is a hard worker he did lots to stay in it eg walk from st kilda to waverley ! that is fact ! and has been in the media

Gee, all this post-game rationalisation about why Geelong actually lost the game and therefor Hawthorn didn't win. What pointless drivel. History records that Geelong lost. Hawthorn won. And everything else is superfluous, especially badly reasoned post mortems thrown around as bait.

As for the threads contention about being 'being the worst cup winning team ever', what a ridiculous proposition. There's absolutely no doubt that the two best teams of 2008, and clearly the best too, played off in the grand final. It's not like a team from the middle of the ladder lucked out.

I suggest the answer to the question, if indeed you're looking for it, is to look for a year where for whatever reason the best sides didn't play off for the flag. And for my money, the most recent example is the 1990 grand final.
