Are the AFL out of their depth in managing footy internationally and the IC ?

So much hate, so much anger. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here a while back that the guy who started the international cup WANTED the games at Royal Park so they could be side by side.

Then play it at Albert Park. There are about 10 ovals within walking distance to the Junction Oval which holds 20,000 and is used by the amateurs and has been an IC venue in the past. The Ross Gregory is equipped for night matches and has around the ground seating at elevated levels.

Funnily enough, it is where South Africa and New Zealand both chose to train .... why not let them play there as well and have some spectators along.

Even Casey Fields, where the under 18s played is a better venue.

I very much doubt it. The people who started the International Cup in 2002 were the International Australian Football Council. The AFL forced them to close shop and ever since they took over the event it has gone to crap.

Don't get me wrong, the AFL have lifted their game immensely with the coverage on their website etc for international development. But it is patently clear that they are too scared of international footy being taken the wrong way to make a proper go of it.

But I don't think it that bad a product. I've paid money to see some pretty shit amateur rugby matches in my time ... I know the demand is there, I have seen it first hand especially now that it is being promoted a little better.

Do you really believe that ?
If you're going to give excuses like logistical issues and impracticality, then please back it up by actually listing or explaining some issues.

So how come there is a match on Saturday if it is logistically impossible. Why is it down in Geelong of all places. Whats wrong with a weekend match in Melbourne ?

Is it also impossible to play more than one match at night ? There are more of floodlit ovals around Melbourne than there are in Warnambool.

What is wrong with one round on the Saturday, the next round on the Sunday. Repeat for 4 weeks. Same duration. Surely these guys have time off work anyway, so what difference does weekend or weekday make.

Regardless of what you might say it is clear the AFL did not want people going otherwise they would have played it in reasonable stadiums with lighting not during workdays.

Yeah, I did about a year ago. But now I'm on contract, so I can't take any holidays. Kind of sucks when you've been waiting three years for it.

The IC lasts 10 calendar days, not 4 weeks, and most teams will play 5 games in that time with the GF on the final Saturday. I guess they could have started a day earlier but splitting the games between Melbourne and Warrnambool has no doubt created difficulties. Its an amateur event and therefore not suited to stadiums. I'm not based in Melbourne so can't speak on the facilities. If they weren't up to scratch then thats clearly poor form.

OK I must not have read it on here I found it here http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php?story=20071207212156744

Says the bloke wanted it at Royal Park North. Horses mouth.

Yeah would've been better to have night matches and weekend games but do listen to the facts when people counter some of your points. Heres a challenge enjoy the match at Geelong then and post something positive here about international footy to prove you're a real fan.

It is tough getting beaten by 140 odd points...it is even tougher to not score...it's the toughest thing to combine all of those and be wearing your mother country's colors...LUCKILY...we went back and had beef black bean and VB...it was a hard earned thirst and the boys first time drinking VB...

Spirits are high...

We may need more VB after tomorrow but we'll keep our heads high...it is a foreign game to all of us...( not me, i have no excuse )...one thing I know about these boys that I have come to know in the last week, they will keep trying...

ALL WE ASK IS SUPPORT US, COME AND WATCH THE CHINESE, COME AND ENCOURAGE US...!!! SUPPORTERS ON THE SIDELINE EQUAL TO A NINETEENTH MAN...

Thanks.

Just a quick correction here. When Will McKenzie and I put the proposal to the AFL back in 1999, we wanted to use Albert Park, not Royal Park North.

What's the correction to? The article didn't say McKenzie proposed Royal Park for 2002, it says he advocated for it after 2005. Either way the message is the same.

well its obvious reading this thread that fishmonger has some serious issues with the AFL. you have to wonder whether he has built up emotions about tasmania not getting a team that he releases by abusing the AFL at every opportunity

you'd be wrong about that.

Go back through my threads and you'll I've been disapointed with the AFL's management of the game for years. To be honest, there are too many reasons to count. But you'll also find alot of positive comments about international footy. I just don't think the two necessarily have to go hand in hand that's all. so sue me.

But I'm not alone, the talkback radio was filled with people annoyed that they didn't even know that the PNG vs NZ Grand Final was on due to the AFL rescheduling the fixture at the last minute.

And if it makes you happy, I can use another avatar. People seem to be prejudiced not only on the Tasmania issue, but that there are actually a majority of people who think that the AFL has rocks in their head over West Sydney and the Gold Coast.

It doesn't matter at all what the "majority of people" think . It's a question of having designs and logically approaching them according to the prevailing conditions .You don't seem to appreciate this .

Thanks cos for the your pile of crap "AFL speak", I think you've expressed exactly what the loyal fans in Sydney were thinking when they deserted their only AFL team on the weekend ....

to say but you stated the exact opposite . P.S. I am still waiting .
