If Caro is to be believed, this just looks embarrassing. The instability around our club is getting ridiculous. And can we not develop our own admin talent anymore?

Post 2011 has been a disaster. Perhaps instead of simply looking at "names", we need to think more creatively.

Something smells at the Pies and I think we're all getting frustrated.

Eh?
So a football club is looking for a specific role position person.
And you get instability?
That's some leap.
Fair enough if that's what you think.

It is the representation of facts that matter and it is Caro's goal to put those facts in the most negative spotlight she can think of. And what else is better then further milking the Gubby saga. How Gubby was brought in and immediately brought down, stinks but she stays well away from that and instead highlights the obvious.
It is what it is. Someone did a nice hit job on Gubby , we are in on the market for his replacement and not afraid of to approach anyone in the business.
The instability is getting ridiculous? No that is Richmond that can't even get a challenge right.
Post 2011 has been a disaster? Overreaction surely? Disasters are a wooden spoon or years in the wilderness with no prospect for the next few years to be competitive. We have to do better and should be capable of doing that, everyone will agree on that.
For every "can we not develop our own..." you will hear the opposite "We expect Collingwood get out of their way to get the best that are available " mantra
And the latter one will win no doubt. So the club seek out a few candidates for possible roles. Is that wrong? Is that a sign of club in disarray? What would other clubs do? Not much different. Carry on.

It's wonderful to know that Caro is so interested in our club and what we are doing.

Pity that we are still miles in front of her club. If she thinks that Balme is their saviour then good luck to her.

Let's face it the Allan affair has been a disaster but in the wash up I would happily have Graham Wright or Walsh at the club in preference to Gary Pert taking on the job. Wright was a classy player and would seem the perfect man for the job. Hine being retained with Rendell would give us some depth, though after reading Knightmare's assessment of the rookie draft ............ :(

At least she keeps me informed. How else am I meant to know who we are hunting for the job?

Respectfully...

I keep waiting for the ship to stabilise, for us not to attract unnecessary headlines, most importantly, for the team to show cohesiveness on and off the field - which translates to that magical sudden lift in performance. Instead we continue to stutter.

Of course, being Collingwood, we attract attention - and the knives are always out. But my feeling is, we've been lurching from one own goal to the next for years now. We've gone from industry leaders to desperately playing catch up. We can't seem to get our appointments right.

Remember when our administration, our player development, our recruiting, our AFL / VFL set up and our medical / conditioning department was the envy of the league?

I keep waiting for it to come together - and I yearn for signs in 2017. But I'm concerned... How much longer can we give the triumvirate of Eddie / Pert / Bucks? We seem to have got little return post 2010 from what seemed a "golden generation". Under the banner of "institutional change" we've changed our whole structure with little yet to show.

Sure we have an interesting and youth filled playing list. But the time to deliver is overdue. Something just doesn't seem right in the culture of the club - despite the very visible efforts to address that very thing.

Buckley says if we don't make finals this year, his head will be on the block. I want him to succeed. I want him to prove the doubters (including increasingly me) wrong. But he makes a fair point. Results are due and at some point, the finger should be pointed at more than just players, footy managers and the like. At some point, he, Eddie and Pert need to be fully accountable. Buckley has been man enough to shoulder that responsibility in 2017. If we don't see true improvement in the club next year, will the other two similarly stand up?

Given the timing of the Gubby suspension it is not surprising the club is struggling to find a replacement. I'm glad we are aiming high with the likes of Wright mentioned, unfortunately he and others are under contract. I'm not keen on Pert assuming the role as I think he already has too much power.

Perhaps Bucks could be both Senior Coach and Football Manager for 2017, I'm sure he would be professional enough to sack himself if we don't make the finals.

Nothing new there we've all known that Collingwood has been a shambles off-field for a while and that the only way for us to fill positions is to headhunt.

Unsurprising to see Wright knock it back and Pert into the role on an interim basis actually scares me. That's like trying to cure influenza with cancer cells!

If it happens I'm sure you can provide numerous examples of clubs going through 3 at least in a similar time frame?

Here's a start Melbourne ? to Connolly to Mahony says a bit about where we sit currently!
Honestly I just don't care.
Internal admin positions come and go.
Meh.
Yes the mythical football director has gone through the rounds, though Balme was there for quite a few years.
CEO position been long term.
Board unruffled decade plus.
Prez there for ever.
Coach steady five years going to 6
Coach before there 12 years
So all in all Collingwood is rock steady in reality.
The rest I smischief making.
The Gubby silliness was an own goal, happens, move on is my motto.

Footy is such a big business these days that off-field management needs to be tight. If we look at Collingwood through the lens that we might apply to a publicly-listed company, its share price would have been belted because of questionable governance and poor succession-planning (ex-MM/NB).

I fear we may have seen the best of Ed and Pert. After what happened to Balme, if you were a top-line footy director, would you trust Collingwood as a place for your career? And if you were a top-line CEO, would you want to mop-up the detritus that loose-cannon Ed produces?

Would go very hard to get Roos as football director if he wants the job (start after his US sabbatical).

My impression is they brought Gubby in as a fresh set of eyes with the experience and kudos to make the hard decisions, which suggests some uncertainty as to what the problems are and where to from here. A lot of this will be around Buckley as a coach. Gubby was a mistake, obviously a risk the board believed worth taking. I've labelled this desperation but perhaps more accurately it reflected the value they placed on Gubby and/or the lack of suitable alternatives.

It is a good thing they are casting the net to find the best possible candidate but it may be that we will have to settle for less, at least in the short term. I'm not keen on Pert moving across, this offers little new in experience or vision. Blaming everyone for our perceived failure is not the answer, only creates instability. Buckley will go at the end of 2017 season if we don't make finals, best option is set a new coach in place then hopefully Eddie will fall on his sword a couple of years after. I wouldn't want to see a new CEO, coach, footy director and President all around the same time.

Agree, weve been too stable at the top of the tree, so to speak.
Just don't see us in disarray, just a self goal due to Gubby. Happens.
Nothing to see here.

Left field suggestion - Garry Lyon. I know he is Melbourne through and through and obviously been dealing with some issues. But if he is looking to get back involved, perhaps a little more out of the public eye than his previous media roles it might be a nice fit for him. I realize he has limited experience but he is a shrewd operator and think it would be a role he could excel in.

PS. i am expecting to get shot down here but just my opinion from outside looking in!

He is a former player and (poor) media personality. What is it that he had done that you think qualifies him for the role (serious question, I'm not potting you)?

What has he done that has led to you having the opinion that he is a 'shrewd' operator?

It took Billy a while?

Im only going off the way he presents in the media and through his articles in the age. Melbourne seem to have a big opinion of him as he seems to be there 'go to' man whenever they get into trouble despite his hesitancy to take on a full time role there, which would have mainly been to do with his media commitments. I quite often find myself agreeing with what he has to say and he has been involved long enough now to know the system inside out. Obviously next to no chance of happening but i wouldnt be disappointed if it did.

Seems too arrogant for that kind of role.
Wouldn't be trusted I'm guessing.
Also he's a Neeld approved man at the time.

Good left field thinking.
