I don't get why Smith cops so much flack but Sheppard, for the most part, escapes criticism.
I wouldn't say he has done anything more at AFL level than Smith has.
Because Shep has a haircut you could set your watch to.

Shep is a cult hero after surving a Dolph Lundgren attack. Rocky IV like.I don't get why Smith cops so much flack but Sheppard, for the most part, escapes criticism.

From a match committee perspective, in our back 6, I'd say he's behind MacKenzie, Glass, Brown, Schofield, Hurn, Waters, Ellis and Yeo. I suspect Bennell and Butler may be considered ahead of him too. So I'd say at highest, he's currently 9th in line but more likely 11th.Wilson - what is he? too small for a tall, but last season he wasn't agile enough for a small (might have improved over the summer but it's hard to tell)
Bennell - difficult to say he's ahead of Smith after two Nab games, will wait and see how he goes when the ball is coming down quicker and more often against really dangerous guys like Walters before casting judgment
McGovern - is a tall.
Brown - has his own issues but is also a tall. Not best 22 anyway.
Schoey - no idea what his role will be this season, but he's ahead of Smith if they are competing for the same role
Yeo - I'd like to think he's ahead of Smith atm, if for no other reason than if he's not in our best 22, why did we recruit him?
Ellis - ahead of Smith but needs to stay fit.
So of seven players, two definately aren't in competition with Smith, two are ahead, one has clear issues of his own, another is relatively unknown hasn't done anything to guarantee a spot in the real season in the two Nab games, and one (Schoey) we have no idea what his role will be.
Of the guys Smith is in competition with I'd have him third of five, behind Ellis and Yeo, but ahead of Wilson and Bennell.

As most know, I am not a Smith fan at all but I'd keep him on instead of Brennan, McGinnity and Wilson.
Schofield may play as more of a utility but he'll likely still spend some time down back. Fortunately Schofield and Glass are pretty adept at manning medium forwards and Schofield provides good drive. But you're welcome to consider my figures as 8th and 10th in line if you wish...it's largely the same result.I can't imagine having Emac, Glass, Brown, and Schoey all in the team, playing as defenders at once.

I just realised, what's up with Butler? I don't recall hearing anything about him being injured but he hasn't even been in the extended squad the last two weeks.
I'd say it's pretty clear our KPP's will be Glass, EMac and Brown each week unless one is well out of form. In which case Schofield would slot in and Smith would move up a rung. However, if in form it then becomes Schofield vs Smith - I'd suggest Schofield is ahead of Smith as a medium defender (although he's much taller). My point was more that we don't pick the best 22 players each week, we pick the best team of 22. Brown is not in competition for spots with Smith, so it is silly to say that one is ahead of the other. If Smith is 8th in line and the seven in front are all full backs, then Smith plays.

I'm merely relating how I think the match committee considers it. However, as I said earlier, dismiss one of the talls, it's much of a muchness. Regardless, he is well down the pecking order.Schofield had a rubbish 2013 as far as being a defender goes. Almost as bad as Smith. Showed a bit when swung forward though.
Playing Glass, Mackenzie and Brown was a huge mistake. Playing all four talls just shouldn't happen.
The above scenario we wouldn't have a true small/ medium defender in our side.
Well if that's the requirement to play for the West Coast Eagles, then where do I sign up? I like to chase a ball too!
If you think Brennan is ahead of Smith then you lose all credibility with me. Brennan should be nowhere near this team.
