It's not a disgrace, when was the last time he was considered? It's like Butterworth, it's more puzzling than disgraceful.

Surely they could have left out Davis for Butterworth, Quiney for Christian and Hughes for Faulkner? That way Mitch Marsh' dunce's hat would have been even more obvious.:p

It was inevitable that Steve Smith was in the side, I guess. It usually is. I thought he said he wanted to concentrate on his batting though and Invers has said that they want him to be bowling as well.

Hughes
Quiney
Davis
Doolan
Henriques
Paine
McDonald
Smith
Maxwell
Hastings
NCN

What a weird side. The bottom 5 are all number 7/8s really, incredible that Hastings and Maxwell will bat so low.

Looking at that line up, Paine would come in at 9 for me. Surely Mcdonald, Smith and Maxwell would come in before him, they all average around 40 compared to Paines 30. Strange lineup, they needed to get rid of one allrounder for a top notch fast bowler.

Hughes
Davis
Khawaja
Ferguson
Burns
Henriques
Hartley (wk)
Cutting
Butterworth
Coulter-Nile
Beer
Extras: Quiney, S.Smith, Doolan, Nevill, McDermott, Boyce

Wouldn't read much into that or even the reasons given. Good on them for telling Ferguson to be more consistent though as he has been subpar in the long format.

Terrible side. Well, they bat till 11 at least

Why wouldn't they play Cummins though? They've seen him, and are already scared of him. Gives a second opening bowler...

maybe cummins is in the main squad, hopefully he is him and pattinson opening the attack woulkd be quite a sight

Mark Cosgrove can blame his being a fat cricketer with a reputation for being lazy as the reason for his omission I would assume, he's been in great touch lately. Glad Ferguson didn't get slotted straight back in either, I think he's a good prospect still, but I would like to see him string some runs together, occasional flashy innings with little in between do his talent a disservice.

he wont but he will be in the mix around the first xi. 12 or 13 man to be involved in the team as a learning curve and will be picked towards the end of the test series or next test series
Same thing as they did with Mitch Johnson during the 2005/06 Ashes series, although I'm not sure that's any recommendation.

In the case of Cutting/Butterworth/McDermott/Starc/Bird is it feasible they actually want to keep the likely back up's out of view of the South African batsmen?
cutting is nothing more than a tomato thrower & mcdermott needs a few lessons from hit old man! who wont get many opportunities because he comes from qld
starc is like Mitchell Johnson tall and fast who lacks control but cant bat. but will get many opportunities to learn and prove him self mainly because he is from NSW
bird needs another season under his belt to prove he inst a one season wounder

Spelling errors aren't the only mistakes in this post.

Starc can bat. Also he doesn't lack control like Johnson. What's a tomato thrower?

And lol @ "ZOMG NSW BIAS!!!1!" still something people whinge about.
a crap bowler that bowls rubbish, eg cutting

starc is every bit like johnson can bowl the totaly unplayable ball but is often erratic, his batting abilty is nothing special he can hang in there like most bowlers.

Starc will be much better than Johnson because he has the constant ability to swing the ball. Completely different type of bowler; in many ways, he is the type of bowler Johnson always wanted to be.

Johnson hits the pitch, Starc is more of a genuine seamer/swinger. Look at how smoother his action is compared to Johnson. Comparisons are inevitable because they are both called Mitch, both bowl fast lefties and both have black hair  but in reality it's a stupid comparison to make IMO.
