We talk about being a diverse and open to all society yet most of the flag designs I see here only represent 1, possible 2 parts of Australian history (the indigenous people and the eureka rebellion). Yes I agree the flag needs to change, but it really should represent all parts of what has made Australia it is today. Throwing away the British symbol is a really disrespectful act considering that is where our culture, government, system of law and the majority of our people originate from.

My flag design tries to include all aspects of Australia....

Though I get your point, that is exactly the opposite of what we need. An inclusive flag uses no major elements of a culture but rather uses symbols that are inclusive of all that have no links to elements of the previous cultures. Plus what about all the other cultures that make up the nation (including Torres Strait people who seem to be missing from this design).

South Africa's flag is a great example of this. The colours have no specific meaning, but the convergence of the Y shape is the bringing together of the diverse groups of the country coming together as one.

A lot of people on here stating facts about the Australian flag that are incorrect.

Yes the flag is similar to the one that was selected in the 1901 competition, with minor differences to the southern cross and more so the Commonwealth star. But more importantly it wasn't until 1953 that the current flag (blue ensign) was officially proclaimed as the National Flag.

I don't like when people say you can't change the flag that people fought under in WWI and WWII (shit argument anyway). But these men and women actually fought under the Red Ensign (as pictured below)

During the World Wars we really fought under the Union Jack not the Australian flag, so it is even more redundant.

I’d vote for that

Reminds me of the Bill Hicks bit

"My dad died for that flag"
"Really? I bought mine"

I was just having a bit of a look around for some flag inspo and found this design that I don't think has been posted yet, the state and military flags on the site look pretty cool too.

Has potential but the use (or overuse) of white in not just the main flag but a couple of the state flags (NSW, Qld, SA, and Tas) feels forced and some of the colours are a little washed out. A couple of colour tweaks and it may actually be one of the best national flag design sets I have seen.

What's your nation?
It's called Povlov, I only made an account so I could have a bit of an attachment to my country in the BigFooty Olympics if/when it get's up.

Not saying this in an aggressive way but what do you mean by getting lost?
If you think about the way that the flag would move about in the wind, it the waves would not be so apparent as they are when they are shown flat on a computer screen.

That is a pretty good way to get some background for a fantasy nation. I used my former NationStates nation for the last bid for the BF Olympics and will be doing so again if/when it happens.

Hatesmanville is mine for anyone interested.

I was way too young when I first signed up. My first ever nation was created early 2004 when I was 9. I would have been the Grandsun of NS.

Apologies if you're sick of seeing my same design on here but I have an idea of how to better incorporate aboriginal culture into our flag. Now I'm not aboriginal so I don't have any dot painting skills, the one you see is just a place-holder for what would be a more meaningful dot-painted design.

I'm in favour of keeping the flag as a-political as possible but I still think aboriginal culture has it's place on the flag, very unique as well.

This design I've come up with is quite similar to a lot of other stuff in this thread and inspired by outer sources as well, taking more of an evolution approach rather than trying to introduce something completely foreign. The Union Jack is dropped in favour of a larger eight pointed federation star (taken from the Unity flag) with the extra point representing the first peoples of Australia. The triangle that runs through the star is loosely inspired by aboriginal flag and from a design point of view breaks up the space in a different way than just a panel like in magpienato's design and other's that I've seen. I think that this gives it a bit more of a contemporary feel that our young country should have, whilst still being a design that can stand the test of time. The southern Cross is also retained in a slightly bolder form that allows it to hold the space better. The biggest change though is the move to green and gold, this is important I feel as it removes any sort of british look from the flag and gives it something uniquely Australian. I quite like the look of these on the flag waver that magpienato posted the link to earlier.

This approach also allows for the states and territories to retain their existing designs (or perhaps update) as well as proudly flaunt their state colours.
