Australian Football Coach

Thank you, the bug's been fixed. Oddly no one had picked it up yet and the statistics haven't been calibrated in awhile - most of the recent development has been with list management.

I like the feel and layout of the game though so I'll probably buy a copy off the site in a few days. Good effort mate

So Steam reached out and has decided to pick up Australian Football Coach, but in order to get it on Steam there's some work that has to be done to the game.

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth investing the time to fix up the game and get it on Steam or if I should just leave it as-is, especially considering I've got a lot else going on that has a chance to make a lot more money than this project.

If you've played AFC, any thoughts on what you'd like to see, or what could be done to improve the game, especially related to the match engine and tactics? Would be greatly appreciated.

I had a go at the demo. Here's my two cents.
1. Not too keen on the graphics. I dunno, they seem a bit basic.
2. A bit hard to navigate. I was at a total loss at the start but now I've played it and I'm still not really getting it.
Other than that I'm liking it and has great potential.

The graphics engine's pretty old now and any money spent on making the game more graphically nice won't be recouped.

I also need to update the demo, some changes have been made to the interface since then.

I'm basically trying to figure out how to realize the potential.

stattosoftware did you end up deciding on it being on Steam?

It's been accepted, but haven't decided whether or not to do so yet for a number of reasons. One of which is I want to keep making the game better, but haven't had much of an incentive to do so recently. It's a lot of work, it hasn't made much money, and I haven't received a lot of feedback about how to make the game better. One of the biggest issues is the match engine got programmed first, and in order to move to a 2.0 version probably needs a complete re-write as the backend code is a total mess. The interface is also out-of-date, but I don't have the resources to make it better.

The plan is to update the current game with 2017 lists (hopefully for both men's & women's leagues) sometime around the start of the season.

I also have a working, very lite mobile version of the game in alpha that I've been doing in the spare time. Right now you can pick your top 22 and play multiple seasons, but nothing else (contracts/training/in-game coaching) has been implemented yet.

That all seems completely fair enough. I guess with a bit more support it would help! Maybe you should make a tablet version so I have something to play on the long train rides i have out to Gippsland ;)

If I ever finish a mobile version, it should easily compile to tablet. I'll get to work and try to post something soon. Right now it's not much of a game :)

In terms of the PC version, the thing that would help the most is just suggestions on how to improve the game, especially in terms of improving tactical choices, and what's confusing in general. if I had a punch list on things people would like to see improved I could probably get that done pretty easily. As I mentioned, the beta testing process happened a couple years ago now and I haven't received much feedback since. I'm happy with the game, but this is one of those genres where there will never be a true end point - look at Football Manager (and all the resources they have!) and how much it changes every two years or so. They don't rewrite everything very often if at all, but there's always something that can be done better.

I should probably get this on Mac so I can give you some feedback!

FYI: I don't have the means to update the Mac version anymore (no more Mac), so it's several iterations behind.

Speaking of the Mac version, when I try opening the demo, it says the .exe application is not supported for Mac, could you advise a way around this? Thanks.

It doesnt no. Just an AFC.exe and AFC.ico

Looks like you downloaded the Windows version - try logging in again and downloading the Mac version.

If the login doesn't work PM me the email address you used to purchase the game with and I'll get everything reset for you.

This has randomly appeared on Steam without fanfare. Apparently they will give you a Steam key if you've already bought it.

I'm disturbed by the quality of the simulation if the Ron Mumford screenshot is any indication.

175cm full-forward who gets picked at #102 in the rookie draft, wins the B&F for Richmond the next year, and yet remains on the rookie list for another season after that.

That's a lot of problems in one screenshot.

Thank you for pointing that out. That's a very old screenshot and the career is gone to history so impossible to know for sure, but Ron there probably won the best and fairest for the Richmond VFL team. The AI tends not to pick rookie-listed players. As you can tell from the Nightcliff best and fairest, every team gets their b&f tracked, not just the big clubs.

Will update with a new screenshot. Will also add in which league the player wins the B&F in the next patch. Also, in a subsequent version, height restrictions have been put in place for positions other than rucks. I think you can still be a 175cm FF, but they should be a rare breed. I'll have to double-check.

EDIT: Upon review the odds were still a bit too high (1 out of 6) so I've reduced them further.

So, I do remember this game and I'd like to add my two cents.
For some reason, I love when games have team jumpers in them, I don't know why but I think it adds to the realism of the game. So if it's possible to have jumpers (that can also be easily edited in Photoshop or something) that would be great.
Also, if you need a hand graphics-wise hit me up and I'll be happy to lend a hand.

stattosoftware here's a quick example of what I mean with the jumpers, I can do the full AFL set if required. (Obviously the Essendon clash)

That looks great. Unfortunately I can only ship generic jumpers with the game. I'll see what I can do in terms of getting the game set up with better graphics. It's behind solving some crash issues users have been having, though.

I can make ones without logos very easily. I might improve the template too because it looks a bit odd. Quick question here, is the version on steam the same as the one on your site?
