Other Australian Gridiron Leagues

I joined a team this year, it seems we have a pretty big league up here with 9 teams. First game this weekend, can't wait:thumbsu:

great stuff mate. just had a squiz on the gridiron qld site......looks to be a decent setup up there. and some of the clubs websites are great too. no wonder you guys can fill 9 teams. we had 8 but the wollongong mustangs have forfeited the '09 season to rebuild the club by focusing on their junior program. but ive always stressed the point to other teams in the NSW that the website is the most important tool in attracting new players to the club and the game.

good luck in your 1st game.

Im not sure which round I want to attend. The Penrith facility is a fair way away, but I have relatives out there, and could organize a reason to be there. The UNSW is pretty nice. While Kyeemagh is closest to me, but i've never been there.

I'll definitely be attending one of those rounds and watch all the games that day.

Yeah, there is 2 new teams this year. My team the Ravens has a pretty big roster too something like 55 guys. True about the websites, thats what got me in:p

I'll have to let you know how i go later tonight.

here's a short vid from a match in Gridiron NSW just last weekend in the league's biggest rivalry game between Sydney Uni Lions and Bondi Raiders.

the camera work's bit dodgy but hang around from 1:00 to 1:25 to see an enormous helmet to helmet collision on an SU kick off return.

the raider didnt seem to feel real good after it.

and the Lion who laid the hit is a 50yo! :D

McGarnacle, were you at all involved with the recent Aussie team going to the UK?

Great to see some local action. The skills seemed pretty good. How hard was that surface?

nope. had to play at nationals (state reps) last year to go on the tour to europe this year, although Sav Rocca and several SA players got selected even though they didnt go to the Gold Coast last year. this selection criteria was a bit contentious because some really good players chose not to go to nationals (such as our starting QB and S who are prolly the best in the land in their positions), and so werent considered for the team. it's tough for some guys because you've got to pay your own way to go on tour with any rep team. it ends up being the best players who can afford it.

it really didnt matter to me because i wouldnt have played anyway.........have an injury which will keep me out of football for the year. but from the guys i spoke to who went, they all said it was a tremendous experience.

obviously, Sav remained in Philly.

:)

some worn out carpet, on top of compressed rubber cushioning, on top of levelled concrete. that field at UWS Nepean is the worst that we play on in Sydney. the turf needs to be replaced..........ive slipped on it countless times.

I've watched some local Queensland action and, while it was good and played on a nice grass Rugby League field, because the spectators weren't allowed beyond the rugby league side line, it was hard to see anything. I used the 12x zoom on my camera to look at some of the action some time. It was cool though because it was the Sunbowl (this one: http://www.gridironqld.asn.au/sunbowl_2008.php, not this one: http://www.sunbowl.org/) and they had a marching band and a radio station turned up.

Are you guys in NSW playing on many hockey (preferably grass) pitches? That seems to be the way to go.

I dream every time I go past a rugby pitch of having the money to convert it into a dedicated Gridiron and having all (or most) of the local league play there all the time. I am not even close to that :).

Pop Warner Football in Australia?

Anyone ever heard of Pop Warner football being played in Australia? Seems somewhat of shame kids have to wait until they're 13 to play in the junior leagues here (at least in Qld last time I checked).

Re: Pop Warner football in Australia?

Was that tumbleweed?

Do I get anything for the least successful thread ever? :)

Not even tumbleweed came through here.

This is far from the least successful thread ever. Some of the first threads on here had OP's 5 paragraphs long. And no replies. Haha, you can see why it is so hard to start up a forum with results like that.

Re: Pop Warner football in Australia?

It is certainly a good little forum now. More traffic than the league and union forums. Gives the soccer forum (not BigSoccer.com) a run.

This would have to be (along with The Bear Pit which is a bit different) the only American football forum in Australia wouldn't it?

Re: Pop Warner football in Australia?

It's alright ERead, at least it's relevant to the forum. SriLankanCat has started threads asking about anything from touch rugby, to travel in Asia. At least you didn't cop one of these -

There is one on LU but it isn't as popular.

This is definitely the best American Football forum in Australia and one of the best in the world IMO. :thumbsu:

As for your OP, there probably wouldn't be enough support for it at that age. There could be an argument for Gridiron being taught in schools, even for a week or so, but maybe that's just me wanting every kid to be indoctrinated with American Football.

At my high school, we had an American PhysEd teacher. We had others, but he was in charge. He tried to get us to play flag football. It was three downs, not four, and I think there were some other differences that made it a little Canadian-footbally.

I really wish he'd persevered, but we sucked and hated it. We thought we were going to like it, but didn't. We never did any drills, so how the hell were we going to really run plays? Perhaps flag football is like that (more off the cuff), but the passes were 90% incomplete and it we were glad it was over when it was over.

The local comp seems to have a good amount of adult and youth players for the small league there is. I am surprised some of the clubs don't run even intra-club kids stuff, but at that age you need parents to buy in which would be hard in Australia. Once you hit 13, you can make your own decision (to a point) about whether to play American Football.

A rich, expat American could make something happen, but probably no one else.

Playing Grid-iron

Hi guys. I am thinking about/going to start playing grid iron for the first time in Melbourne and I was just wondering if anyone else plays?

Also if you have any tips or hints that would be awesome.

Re: Playing Grid-iron

Who do you play for hlebalicious? I'm going to join the Western Crusaders I think, as it's right down the road from me.

Do you reckon it's gonna be too tough to get started having no prior experience?
