Hope the police get dealt with as even though she was carrying a knife, blind Freddie could disarm a 95 year old

So you reckon a 95 yo old women is dangerous? Gmab
Any dementia patient with a knife is a serious danger. Clearly you’re lucky enough to have never dealt with anybody with dementia. They can be uncharacteristically strong and resistant.

I have worked in dementia wards as a div 2 nurse.
Dementia doesn't make you stronger at all.
If they're 95 they're not going to be quick at all. All you'd need to do would be get a lomg batton and whack the knife out or get 2 mattreses from front and behind to get her on the ground .
Using a taser on someone that old is a total crime and they have killed her.
If two police can't disarm a 95 yo they shouldn't be working as police.
If they feared for their lives they are as weak as piss.
They will probably attempt to defend what they've done like they do everytime they kill someone unnecessarily.

I'm not saying they're right to taser a 95 year old woman, but it's fanciful to think you can take a knife off someone without serious risk of them or you getting stabbed regardless of whether they're 95 years old or otherwise.

The police were probably not the right people to call in this situation.

If they're that useless they can't think of a solution, use pepper spray and push her onto the floor on to a mattress.
You could easily grab her wrist from behind by distracting her from in front as well. Take her legs out with your feet while you hold her wrist.
There is no way a 95 yo can overpower a policeman strength wise.
They must recruit some real dullards these days.

Not to mention all police wear stab
vests so the only way to get seriously injured is for a 95 year old to over power two cops and stab them in the neck.

These cops should be laughed out of the service as gutless cowards before they face trial for excessive force.

Totally agree.
I could have sorted it myself. Maybe the nurses were too afraid to put her on the ground.
Bottom line is , don't call the police for mental health intervention, it's too dangerous.
I know a couple with an 18yo autistic girl who acts out and starts yelling. The neighbours call and they throw her on the ground and handcuff her every time.
They need to recruit better people and provide comprehensive mental health intervention training.
They could have easily thrown a net over that 95yo women but there first response is tasers and guns usually.

It's culture. When the chief of SAPOL talks about wanting to just cut the rope of an Extinction Rebellion protester hanging off a bridge, what sort of message does that send out to the rank and file? These guys tasering near centenarians are just products of the system.

Wow you'd make a good action movie star 🙄

It was probably police overreach although a knife was involved. So its hard to determine properly from the article. A 95 year old may be weak but they can still do damage with a knife. Police shouldnt have to deal with people waving a knife at them no matter how old they are (if thats what happened).

in any case this is a one off case. Do we have any data to discuss about police brutality? Something meaningful to say whether this is actually a problem in society or not? You cant make a point in a country of 22 million people based off a handful of examples let alone a one off example that isnt even concrete evidence based on reporting so far.

Officer responsible for Taser ‘under review’, police say.
The position of a police officer who used a Taser on a 95-year-old woman in a Cooma aged care facility, leaving her in a critical condition, is “under review”, police say.

Police will front the media at 11.30am to explain why its officers deployed a Taser on elderly woman Clare Nowland, who suffers from dementia.

In a statement, police confirmed the officer responsible is having his duty status under review.

It also confirmed the homicide squad has been brought in to help investigate the incident. In a statement, police said:

About 4.15am on Wednesday (17 May 2023), emergency services were called to an aged care facility on Binalong Crescent, Cooma, after reports a resident was armed with a knife.

Officers attached to Monaro Police District attended, along with NSW Ambulance paramedics, and located the woman, still armed with a knife.

Police attempted to speak to the woman. During this interaction, a senior constable discharged his taser, causing the woman to fall and strike her head.

The 95-year-old woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before she was taken to Cooma District Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

A critical incident team comprised of officers from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a taser.

That investigation is subject to independent review.

The officer’s duty status is under review.

From family who work aged care:

Some elderly, including women in their 90s, can be physically large and difficult to move. Even swung by a weak hand a knife can cause severe injury if it hits a vulnerable spot like the neck.

But to me it’s just the hypocrisy. Young Indigenous kid from Alice Springs - “yep shoot the little c*nt if he’s got a knife”. Old white granny “oh she’s a sweet old granny who couldn’t hurt a fly”.

Police are trained to respond to actions not identity.

Yeah nah, no need to taser a 95yo women in any circumstances. It was cowardly from the police.

It's safer to assume that every cop is like Zachary Rolfe rather than him being the exception.

Had a steak knife and using a walking frame.
Some of the posts on this thread defending the police response are embarrassing.

Woman, 95, Tasered by an officer, was approaching on a walking frame with a steak knife, NSW police say
Police said the officer’s duty status was under review, as civil liberties groups demanded an independent investigation into Cooma incident

A frail, 95-year-old woman was approaching officers at a “slow pace” using a walking frame when they deemed it necessary to deploy a Taser, leaving her fighting for her life in hospital.

New South Wales police confirmed on Friday that the homicide squad was investigating the incident and that the senior constable involved, who had 12 years experience, is under review and no longer working.

Good thing she wasn't indigenous, then they really would have gone to town on her.

Force used should be commensurate to the threat.

Two cops vs a 95 year old woman with a walking frame and a steak knife.
It seems difficult to argue that a taser was needed here.

Police do not need to risk their lives to disarm a knife-wielding individual. Don’t give me that “they are weak as piss” rubbish as it’s a terrible, outdated argument.
