raf epstein just spoke with nick mckenzie on abc melbourne .... mckenzie suggests smokin joes offerings this morning points to an ex labor pollie
I doubt it, if it was being pursued you wouldn't mention it at all in a public forum (if you had any modicum of due process).Perhaps being pursued therefore not named
I should hope that Old Mate from ASIO is being hauled into the PM's office today to explain why he thought it was appropriate to throw this hand grenade into the public arena. There is simply no logical justification for it, other than trying to big note the work ASIO are doing (which it didn't).Richard Marles has come out pretty strongly too asking for the person to be named. So could be LNP.
It is also possible that none of them know and the idea of a spy in the ranks transcends party lines.
also worth noting .... following listener prompts, epstein did ask questions contrasting this with security services aggresively pursuing the east timor bugging whistleblower matterAnd Sussan Ley will shortly come out saying because of what Hockey said and what McKenzie said it points to an ex Labor politician...
And David Littleproud will then come out saying that because of what Hockey said and what McKenzie said and what Ley said it clearly points to an ex Labor politician
And by mid-morning Peter Dutton will come out saying that the growing speculation across the country is that it's an ex-Labor politician whose betrayed our country and that Albanese has a clear responsibility to come clean with the Australian public and name this filthy spy - why won't he? What is he trying to hide?
And someone in the Australian Newspaper will re-publish a story about a former Labor politician with a dubious history, let's say Sam Dastyari for convenience sake, and we will have a reds under the bed scandal of Menzies proportions.
Just the sort of scandal Dutton was looking for just a couple of days out from the Dunkley by-election and with the Tasmanian State election just a week away.
Funny how these things work out, eh? It's almost like it's scripted.
It's a good thing they weren't a thirteen year old autistic kid.also worth noting .... following listener prompts, epstein did ask questions contrasting this with security services aggresively pursuing the east timor bugging whistleblower matter
a fair point to be honest
My money is on Brother Stewie.Richard Marles has come out pretty strongly too asking for the person to be named. So could be LNP.

This is 100% spot on.And Sussan Ley will shortly come out saying because of what Hockey said and what McKenzie said it points to an ex Labor politician...

Would mentioning the issue in itself be enough to cause a case to be tossed out due to inability to find impartial jury/ judge?I doubt it, if it was being pursued you wouldn't mention it at all in a public forum (if you had any modicum of due process).
And then for lols it turns out to be john Hewson.also worth noting .... following listener prompts, epstein did ask questions contrasting this with security services aggresively pursuing the east timor bugging whistleblower matter
a fair point to be honest
Probably not (I doubt this sort of thing would end up as a trial with a jury anyway) but it's pretty dumb to announce it if there is an active investigation anyway.Would mentioning the issue in itself be enough to cause a case to be tossed out due to inability to find impartial jury/ judge?
Or (as another poster said) maybe there is suspicion that someone else currently is skirting close to the edge and so warning off
Sounds unlikely to be a former PMAre we allowed to speculate?
Kevin Rudd. Speaks mandarin, connected in academic, diplomatic and political circles. Would know the right people.
The way it is worded says to me that it absolutely wasn't a PM, or that any PM had any knowledge of what was going on, or was planned to be involved.Sounds unlikely to be a former PM
ASIO reveals plot by retired politician to introduce a prime minister's family member to foreign spies
An unnamed former Australian politician, who was successfully cultivated by an international spy ring, once suggested bringing a prime minister's family member into contact with their foreign handlers.www.abc.net.au
Reading that it is definitely China. My money is still on Brother Stu.Sounds unlikely to be a former PM

Probably some Randy putting a Bobb on each wayIf I were to guess , I would say Canavan, Morrison , Stuart Robert, Joyce, Jane Hume or Ken Wyatt.
Edit: It's a former politician.
Too stupid, obvious and erratic to be useful, has to be someone a little more competent. My money is on Brother Stewie.
- He resigned for no real reason and without any future prospects.
- He has history of doing anything for a dollar - Synergy 360, internet claims, .....
- He is dumb enough.
- Morrison is his mentor
mckenzie also said he could easily point the finger* at past/present members of both major parties whos dealings with foreign countries would (and should) raise uncomfortable questionsalso worth noting .... following listener prompts, epstein did ask questions contrasting this with security services aggresively pursuing the east timor bugging whistleblower matter
a fair point to be honest
Yeah and that is how a lot of this works these days - there is out and out spying (divulging secrets, etc) and then there is the grey area of subtle (and not so subtle) foreign influence.mckenzie also said he could easily point the finger* at past/present members of both major parties whos dealings with foreign countries would (and should) raise uncomfortable questions
Don't read anything into the timing - not Morrison's retirement, not the upcoming by-election.Given the Dunkley poll coming and the odd timing of the announcement (can the ASIO boss really just spill this to the media?). Gladys Liu could be the one as there’s a history of connection to CCP affiliated bodies.
How dodgy are these Liberal campaigners?
Three spring to mind as other likely candidates, and maybe another half dozen less likely but completely plausible.China is the unbackable favourite, sure - but any other surprise countries we think it could be?
