And by mid-morning Peter Dutton will come out saying that the growing speculation across the country is that it's an ex-Labor politician whose betrayed our country and that Albanese has a clear responsibility to come clean with the Australian public and name this filthy spy - why won't he? What is he trying to hide?
And someone in the Australian Newspaper will re-publish a story about a former Labor politician with a dubious history, let's say Sam Dastyari for convenience sake, and we will have a reds under the bed scandal of Menzies proportions.
Just the sort of scandal Dutton was looking for just a couple of days out from the Dunkley by-election and with the Tasmanian State election just a week away.
Funny how these things work out, eh? It's almost like it's scripted.

I doubt it, if it was being pursued you wouldn't mention it at all in a public forum (if you had any modicum of due process).
Richard Marles has come out pretty strongly too asking for the person to be named. So could be LNP.

I should hope that Old Mate from ASIO is being hauled into the PM's office today to explain why he thought it was appropriate to throw this hand grenade into the public arena. There is simply no logical justification for it, other than trying to big note the work ASIO are doing (which it didn't).

My money is on Brother Stewie.
- He resigned for no real reason and without any future prospects.
- He has history of doing anything for a dollar - Synergy 360, internet claims, .....
- He is dumb enough.
- Morrison is his mentor

Would mentioning the issue in itself be enough to cause a case to be tossed out due to inability to find impartial jury/ judge?
Or (as another poster said) maybe there is suspicion that someone else currently is skirting close to the edge and so warning off

And then for lols it turns out to be john Hewson.
Probably not (I doubt this sort of thing would end up as a trial with a jury anyway) but it's pretty dumb to announce it if there is an active investigation anyway.
Option B is possible, but still a s*** way of sending a warning, basically besmirching the last decade of pollies.

Same reasoning rules out Barnaby Joyce.
He was Assistant Minister for Defence (he got sacked by Turnbull) which in itself is quite the reflection of the talent pool in the Liberal Party.

Yeah and that is how a lot of this works these days - there is out and out spying (divulging secrets, etc) and then there is the grey area of subtle (and not so subtle) foreign influence.
Don't read anything into the timing - not Morrison's retirement, not the upcoming by-election.
This is an annual report released towards the end of February, just as it was last year.

Three spring to mind as other likely candidates, and maybe another half dozen less likely but completely plausible.
I'm not going to indulge in that speculation here though (after originally doing so and deleting that post).
