Agreed. Stats may not show the impact that he had, but he definately forced a contest better than Renouf did in the first half and reduced the effectiveness of Jamar's tap work. The result was clear enough in the 3rd quarter. Dees runners couldnt get their hand on it. Good effort from the Midfield to win stoppages throughout the 2nd half as well.

Of note in the 3rd quarter was the hawks small forward line. At one point i noted Lewis, Shiels, Savage and Burgoyne as the only hawks in the F50. Buddy was on the wing. At times we had a Roughy/Hale/buddy in the F50 but rarely did we go with more than 1. It seemed to shake up Melbourne's defensive structures inside 50. Did anyone else notice this?

Yeah I did. Renouf went down and thus forcing Roughead to ruck in parts saw him out of the F50, so I don't think that was the plan from the outset.

I just don't 100% like Franklin playing on the wing, HFF is as far up the ground as I like him, at the bounce of a ball. I understand he's very athletic and we need to utilise those skills but I'd rather see him touching the ball around the F50 arc and inside as much as possible.

Very happy with Hale, always forced a contest whether around the ground or in the ruck, The fist on the inbound kick in the second half to sucklings advantage which resulted in a goal is the work ethic we need from all our players, all the time.

I think as confidence grows the guys will look for a sweeping Suckling to setup a lot of play, he is a weapon, we need him to get as much ball as possible in space.

Interesting to see how we go with our Rucks in coming weeks, would be good to see Lisle and Roughead helping out Hale until we get a true no1 ruck, would give us some flexibility around the ground too.

The major positive for me was that we didn't have too many passengers this week, however, I'm not sure Bruce is adding more to the side than we would get out of some of the guys running at box hill. Hoping to see improvement or for him given a chance to get some form in the VFL.

i reckon a renouf should have a look at the ruckwork roughie and hale put on
and maybe a spell in the twos wouldnt hurt remember he was thrown in as a kid 3 years ago by necessity and bring in lisle
i reckon the tiges have a couple of aggressive ruckmen in graham and vickery ....and well renouf is a little bit passive for my liking

our disposal in the first half exclusive of Junior was shite, you can say what you like about the poor goal kicking but do that to a Top 4 side it is all over red rover...

2nd half was excellent, still not enough run for mine...needing Pup and Smith to add that extra pace...

someone mentioned Burgers, he is a class player but I don't think he has the 'x' factor to bring us out of the mire if required...players like L Hodge or hard-nuts can make a win when all is lost....example against Adelaide, when the chips were down I didn't see Burgers, Mitchell, Lewis taking the game by the scruff of the neck...

l am having a chuckle reading the comments throughout this thread, seriously some of you have ridiculously high expectations. Remember Collingwood last year kicked more points every week and seemed to miss easy goals but continued to win because sides couldnt get the ball out of defence- same thing yesterday. Melbourne arnt as bad either as you are all making out- they did draw with Sydney who beat Essendon yesterday, l think very few sides would of beaten us yesterday.
As for some bagging Hale , all l know is Hale is light years better than Skipper as a ruckman and around the ground so we must be improved in the ruck.Seriously anyone who thinks he wasnt a major reason why we took over completely wasnt watching the same game.

One negative thought though- is Clinton Young like Jason Gram the worst best kick in the game? He can kick it 60 metres but rarely to advantage and his kicking for goal is dreadful. Should he play backward of centre and suckling forward of centre so reverse roles for the better of the team? It is frustrating because Young is getting the ball and can run and carry, seems to have baulked up and is better in contested situations.

So far i've seen people bagging out the games of Hale, Birchall, Batemen and Mitchell, all of whom played great.

Pretty much agree, though 'great' might just be a bit much.

Birch was running the lines well yesterday and found a fair bit of the footy. Needs to work on that goal kicking (not alone there) and as another poster said, sometimes tends to go missing when we are down.

Mitch's disposal has let him down a little in the first 2 rounds but I agree he's going alright. One of the BOG against Adelaide.

Bateman was solid though his disposal wasn't always top notch either. Great to see him play well though, hope he can keep that form going.

Hale was great when it mattered and is so quick with the handball....set up a lot of plays with quick hands and even one of Sucker's goals. With another crummer down forward, Hale going forward really isn't as bad (or too tall) as some are saying. Just need one of Breust, Pup, Wanganeen etc to come in as a crummer/tackler for it to work properly. Ossie, with part-time crummer Cyril, is one short for mine.

This may have been true yesterday but he was not alone there...I think he's generally a good kick for goal, especially on the run from outside 50

Profligate is the word to sum up this game. Match should have been over 15 minutes into the first term.

How often do you see a team get 75 inside 50's, 40 better than their opponent for only a 45 point margin?

If you are a Hawks supporter, and you only watch Hawks games - probably never. 75 inside 50's is a club record. Yet so many Hawks supporters were not entirely pleased. Not entirely pleased? What do you actually expect? To play worse?

Maybe they prefer we play worse.
