Saw it tonight, didn't mind it, was entertaining enough to not notice the length of time it goes for. The 3D aspect was cool, I don't know there was just something *missing* from it, I didn't feel that attached to the characters really and a film like this I believe should do that. I'll watch it again sometime cause usually you do pick up more on the second watch but if that doesn't change my thinking then wont bother with it again.

As far as I see it;

Story 5 or 6/10
Visuals 10

Saw it a few days ago and wasn't too impressed. Yes the 3d Pandora looked awesome, but the effect does fade, and other than that it didn't have a lot to offer.

The plot was disappointingly cliched and obvious, but the real killer for me was the dialogue, as someone mentioned it makes it really hard to feel for characters who keep blurting out cringe worthy lines.

Am I the only person who thought it was James Camerons personal big **** you to the "war on terror"?

"Winning the hearts and minds" of the people,"shock and awe" tactics, towers(big mutha****ing tree)falling down etc, etc, the whole thing reeked of the War in Iraq

Amazing movie visually:thumbsu:

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

Just came back from IMAX 3d screening.

OMFG. Seriously one of the best films I've ever seen. I even found myself tearing up in different parts.

Visually the film is mouth watering, the wild life and nature that is created is MIND BLOWING to say the least. It takes the human mind to a new place of pure bliss. If there was ever a garden of Eden Pandora is the place.

I've never encountered a film that has sucked me in to the extent of actually believing I was apart of the film, or that I was actually there witnessing all of it go on.

To me AVATAR is like taking trip to another planet for 3 hours, literally. The 3D is phenomenal and the sound is and atmosphere of Pandora is extraordinary. The film is so out there and so creative that it really does allow any normal person to feel and see something so abnormal and beautiful.

I was initially unsure about AVATAR although I have followed it's progress for the last 2 years. But Cameron has hit the mark on this one, creating cinematic history with a hypnotizing effect.

Honestly with no other film ever reaching these sorts of boundaries I'm giving it 9.5/10. I'm not even sure why I can't give it 10/10 only because i feel that the perfect film is never reachable.

I'm fresh out of the screening and I'm still shaking, I didn't want it to end, after seeing AVATAR this life seriously feels like a flat tyre.

Richskee:thumbsu:

thats great summing up, thats ho i felt for the rest of the day after i saw the movie

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

oh c'mon mate - true lies, aliens, terminator, terminator 2, titanic, even strange days are all better cameron films. the characters in those films are stronger - better written - commanding presences. engaging the audience.
apart from the army dude this film lacked these qualities in the writing and acting.

ben cousins didn't headline well - he lacks the big action star presence which is usually the bookmark of cameron's films - the writing was fairly predictable and in parts uninspired. sometimes boring.

the film will be remembered and appreciated for the visuals - not the story which is nowhere near cameron's best - far from enthralling and lacking the perfect bland of action, tension and humour usually synonymous in his films.

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

avatar has hit the billion mark!!!

china yet to open.... I wonder if they have many 3d screens there :/

stolen from another forum

Avatar made an estimated $68.3 million at the domestic BO in it’s third weekend, crushing the previous record of $45 million set by Spider-Man 3.

Avatar’s 3rd weekend is $28m larger than the all-time record January opening weekend.

James Cameron will hold the #1 and #2 spots at the worldwide box office by the end of the week, making a grand total of $3 billion on two films.

irfan did some compiling in terms of how long it took the top 5 grossers to hit the $1 billion mark. This is what he found:

1. Titanic took 11 weeks (final: $1.84 billion)
2. LOTR: Return of the King took 10 weeks (final: $1.12 billion)
3. Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man’s Chest took 10 weeks (final: $1.07 billion)
4. Avatar took 17 days (current total: $1.02 billion)

5. The Dark Knight only hit it with the small Janurary re-release, making just a hair over $1 billion.

The #1 2009 domestic grosser (so far) Transformers Revenge of the Fallen took 114 days to hit $402 million. Avatar will surpass that by next weekend(21 days).

completely agree. the visuals were great but the acting was cartoonish, except for the sarge. movies like this will be made for tv in 10 years time and will not earn 1 billion in a week.

the scene where the soldier guy betrays them and the chick asks him to go away, the very next scene he's flying on the red dino bird and suddenly he's a hero LOL, that was some BAD script writing.

I think it will pass Titanic in takings. People are watching this in 3D and 3D IMAX, which costs a lot more than the average ticket. This will ensure that this movie keeps making big money for the next few weeks. As well as this, if it gets Oscar nominations and then manages to win a few awards, it keeps the movie in the headlines and keeps people watching it at the cinemas. Of course, the actual tickets sold and people watching the film will be less than the Titanic, but I think it will top it for $$ earned.

No, nothing ever will beat Titanic

It's still only 6th all time when you adjust for inflation. And as ticket prices keep increasing it will eventually be overtaken without adjusting.

With adjusting Avatar may crack the all time top 10.

Lots of great CGI but not much substance like Titanic.

Crude. Dumb. Silly.

Takes back cinema 100 years when it was pure spectacle.

Even that wasn't enough to compensate for an appalling script.

162 minute coma.

The Abyss was good in it's day. :p

We got to see Mary Mastrantonio's breasts.

People will probably look back on Avatar from a similar point of view and wonder what the fuss was all about...

Even though films that are based around their special effects, not their plot and acting bore me, I'll probably go and see it.

LOTR and Terminator had a human element to their storylines.

People have small minds if this is a must see movie.

Agree, Titanic didn't have any substance either. A love story, and a poor one at that, on a sinking boat that we knew was going to sink.
