Yeah they hate it. I met these irish guys years and years ago and told them that my ancestory was irish and they gave me a serve.

Americans moreso than aussies (i think) are paranoid about having no culture so they'll counter this by claiming their irish american or italian american when in actual fact they're just american.

Its about having respect for your roots imo. Whether people acknowledge it or not, you inherit a lot of character traits and culture from your ancestors.

In a country like America, they have every reason to hang on to a bit of 'the old country' because there is no universal American culture. They are 52 states, united. In major immigration cities like chicago, new york, LA etc. everyone sticks together with 'their own kind'.

Irish American is a perfectly valid culture in its own right now. It is seperate from being Irish, but still referred to as the same thing.

Not that it's a bad accent, but the one Eric Bana did in Munich reminded me of that old man character he used to do on Full Frontal. Very serious movie but I was pissing myself laughing the whole time. I always expect him to come out in one of these movies and go "G'day, I'm Poida''.
