Kane has NFI, never thought I’d agree with Tom Morris.
But Kane Cornes is being paid to talk crap.
The people here fantasising they are list managers aren't.
I think he has more of an idea of what he's doing than you realise, you've not only read his views but you have shared them.

Picks in the early 20s this draft are more valuable than maybe any draft we've seen. Everyone knows there are 30-odd guys that would go top 15 in most drafts.

This means:

1) The dogs are not likely to give it up to make a stand.
2) Geelong are unlikely to blink and pay a heap more than that.
3) If it came to him going to the draft (it won't), no other club is going to pick a player who doesn't want to go there when there's a heap of talent still on the board.

Still reckon it ends up as Geelong's first and a future 3rd.

Bailey Smith is worth more then just pick 20 you would have to give up a second rounder also

There's not no difference and the trading club would have to want to do it. You're sending him to the draft over that difference.
But it takes to two trade. Why isn't Geelong equally sending him to the draft over that difference?

Funny how that just happens to be true when Geelong fans want their pick 20 to be perceived as valuable in the context of offering it for a trade.

Nobody has a crystal ball to the future. We're talking about the AFL output of 17 year olds. Smith himself is proving that even if you find a valuable player through a draft there's uncertainty over how much that player will potentially contribute to success over a career for the team that drafts them anyway.

All we can broadly say is that the Dogs would getting access to the 20th choice draftee, of which isbroughly similar value for the 20th best in future years

Don't take this the wrong way but I don't think the Geelong administration would take the idea of him being sent to the draft seriously. The dogs would have to sit there and wait until the deadline had passed and no trade was technically possible for Mackie to realise it's not just an empty bluff. Even if you're not bluffing, a bluff only works if it looks like it could happen.

Dear God Morris is a moron.

Has been told 100 times Smith would go to the ND not PSD but can't get it right.

Sports journalism in this country seriously you have to laugh.

Would be interesting to know what Cats supporters would be expecting for Max Holmes if the script was flipped..
Personally if I'd expect the first rounder of the team he nominated, knowing that if he is OOC we don't have a leg to stand on

In his draft year he refused to move interstate citing mental health and now he’s demanding to move to another Vic club because he’s outgrown the Dogs. Is this the most entitled bloke in the AFL? I would love for this trade to fall through and he gets picked by WC in the PSD.

The highest Bailey Smth has finished in a B&F is 7th. Holmes just won our B&F by miles and was easily BOG in both finals until he was injured in the prelim. He's done more than Smith in his career.

But if he had a shit year in 2025, then did his ACL in 2026, was coming out of contract and said he wanted out we would probably get offered a single first rounder plus maybe a bit more. We'd stomp our feet, get annoyed and then accept the deal at the deadline because it's the best we're going to get.

I'd want more. Much more. But realistically I know we'd have no bargaining position

Geelong fans keep claiming this as if

  • Firstly, who it's immaterial to the contract that you're offering him. Geelong aren't not offering him a good contract on the basis of B&F results. In the context of trade negotiations, Dogs don't need to even discuss Smith's theoretical past or future output - they can simply represent that on the basis of the money both club are willing to pay him. Geelong are willing to make him about their third or fourth highest paid player. Going through it is already accounted for virtue of that fact.
  • In any case, it's a selective reading of his player worth that's due to the vagaries of voting system and also being part of a very good team. No Dogs fan will dismiss the ACL or that his form took a gradual dip mid 2022 and then a sharper dip mid 2023. But at the same time pretending like he wasn't winning finals off his own boot and playing BOG or near BOG in finals at age 20, playing entire months where he was in the best 4-5 players in a win for every single game, etc. He could have easily been voted 4th or whatever. in a different voting system that didn't reward consistency as much. We count pre-season results in our B&F!!
  • Even so, a 20/21 year old finishing 7th in the best and fairest in a good team as a young player, discounting the above, is still a good asset in terms of expectations of output as the player enters their mid 20's and early 20's. If you could guarantee that you could get a player that would finish 7th in your club's best and fairestin a finals-making team with a random pick 20 in the draft as a 20 year old, you take it and say that it was a successful draft pick (if anything, you would also take it with a top 10 pick, just highlighting how Geelong fans trying to talk down his value with selective stat's aren't even achieving that despite the fact that they are being selective in the first place
