A hell of a lot to learn but each time I fire it up I’m getting better, I’m glad I’ve jumped into this and had a crack, can definitely see why so many people love it.
I think I played for about 6 hours and learned a lot in that time then restarted for the real play through.

Have just kicked off my third run through.

First was balanced difficulty playing a Drow Warlock/Fighter, second was on tactician difficulty playing a half-elf longbow wielding Sword Bard which was a heap of fun. Third is again on tactician and I think I'll take a darker path, wood elf Gloomstalker Ranger/Assassin.

Done any as Dark Urge?

Played a bit more last night, enjoying just wandering around and exploring and seeing what I come across, have got myself into some battles that I just wasn’t prepared for lol, especially as I followed the hag, didn’t end well, also copped an absolute walloping from a group of Gnolls.

What’s the best mix as a party to go with? I try to have someone use a bow & arrow from distance, my character is a Barbarian beast so he goes in as the heavy hitter, then I’ll try have a character to heal/protect with shields & if I can use a character for sneak attacks, very tactical & I’m loving it but very hard at the same time.

I don't think I have ever not had to cheese that fight

If you are the melee Barbarian I would go with:
Shadowheart as healer and utility. Can also do some decent damage in some builds but mostly healing and support
Astarian: sneaking, some range with bows and lock picking/trap disarm utility
Then a caster like Wyll or Gale so some area of effect magic damage or just being able to hit weaknesses like fire, lightning, frost etc. If they aren't your style then Lae'zel or Karlach as another melee tank might be fun for your playstyle

Oh my, Ketheric on tactician is no joke. But 3 days later, he has been bested

It’s a lot harder than balanced. I did him first time on tactician but it was pretty hairy.

Act 1 on tactician is quite a challenge, you’re pretty squishy until level 5 or so.

The gnolls can kick your arse if you’re not prepared and careful!
I tend to thin the herd by using ranged attacks and then disengaging and hitting them again. Having them all wail on you at once isn’t much fun!

As for ideal party, after playing a Swords Bard in my first tactician run (never played a bard before) I’d want one in my party at all times. Ranged flourish attacks out the wazoo, full spell caster, especially useful for crowd control and some buffs but not as good as a wizard or sorcerer for big AOE damage. I recommend SB10/Fighter 1 (for Archery fighting style)/Wizard 1 for learning wizard spells from scrolls. They’re skill monkeys and make a great party face. Will respec Astarion for my current play through.

One high damage melee class - Fighter/Barbarian/Paladin/Monk. Will be using Karlach as a wildheart barb 8/Thief 4 in this role.

AOE spell caster Wizard or sorcerer, light or tempest cleric aren’t bad and offer some healing utility.

Ranged damage dealer - started a new tactician run as an Assassin and it’s ruling at L3. Took out most of the spider matriarch adds solo before bringing the rest of the party in to finish off mama and a two other spiders. Will probably end up as Gloomstalker Ranger 5/Assassin 3 and battle master fighter 4.

I don’t always run a cleric/healer but if I do I like them for utility for healing, crowd control and spirit guardian tanking.

Everyone has their preferences so find things you enjoy.

Righto

Think I’m done with this game. Orin and Steelwatch boss fights are just impossible for me. Orin is ridiculously overpowered. 50+ damage per turn is simply too much. How the **** am I meant to kill the bitch when she gets unstoppable and heals every turn? I can’t even kill the other people around her because they have Sanctuary

Act 3 can get absolutely ****ed.

No chance of beating these fights without extensive Googling of strategies. None of the strategies I’ve found align with my party set up.

What is your level and what is the party you are using?

12. Rogue, Karlach, Shadowheart and Gale. My main absolutely sucks he is by far my worst character. Does **** all damage.

Apparently I need to push all those campaigners off the ledge with Sanctuary. I can’t do all that before Orin kills me.

Turn on turn based mode and make your main invisible through some spells. Might get in some sneak attacks or shoves in with Karlach

Might be worth re-speccing at Withers to get more shove power for this fight

Should be able to work with those.

Glad you took out Orin.

If you want any help respeccing your party and working out what gear will maximise your party’s chance of success feel free to ask. PM if you want to.

Having builds, spells and gear load outs that work together makes a huge difference.

Even more important is getting understanding of buffs, stealth, initiative, positioning, actions and bonus actions and how to utilise them when setting up for a battle and in the fight.

Rather than Rogue 12 why don't you have a look at a ranged damage dealing DEX based Sword Bard build or a Ranger/Rogue build? Rogues only have a single attack, they can be great multiclassed but I feel that any of the pure rogue classes are under-powered. Another level 12 build that might be fun is a Ranger Hunter - they wreck once they hit L11.

My pick would be something like Sword Bard 10/Fighter 2. You can be the party face with decent charisma, wreck enemies with ranged attacks (slashing flourish gives you double the normal attacks - SB gets two attacks at level 6), great spells utility and crowd control spells, able to be effective up close and personal if needed.

With Sword Bard take two weapon fighting style and with fighter take Archery fighting style and you get action surge at with second fighter level.

Get your DEX to 20 or 22 via Feats and other buffs, sharpshooter feat, one of the premium long bows such as Dead Shot, Titanstring or Gontre Mael and some good armour such as Armour of Agility and items that improve your advantage/damage/critical hit chances.

Act 3 I'm finding I have to back track a bit (level 11) I don't seem to be high enough level to take on some of the bosses/big fights around the joint. Karlach got arrested at the start of act 3 and **** knows where she ended up lol

Wyrm Rock Prison most likely

There’s a couple of jails.

Gonna be a jailbreak!
