Re: Ballarat Football League

Wasn't Northey's assistant coach S O'Loughlin taking all the credit Grand final day for coaching the side all year. Northey was more of a mentoring role.

Northey would run the show - he gets the credit as head coach for winning and the blame for losing. You think if they lost he would have fronted the media and said "hey don't look at me - its O'Loughlin's fault"

Very little would have happened on Grand Final day with out Northey's approve 1st.

Would you rate GL as the number 1 coach in the league?

Pretty even I would have thought! Northey (O'Loughlin) won the flag without the best side in the comp while Learmonth with only a net change of two players (In: Cheevers, Newman & Edwards Out: Hastings) from a side that won 4 games in 2007 and defeated Northey (O'Loughlin) on 3 of the 4 occasions during the year but obviously not winning the BIG ONE!

Pretty Even - meh!!

1. How many flags has Learmonth coached?
2. What is the highest level Learmonth has managed to coach at?

These 2 questions will answer how far off Northey he is.

And the 2 changes to the side comment - seeing as the league standard dropped significantly it was not hard for Darley to look like they have improved. That was the main reason they only lost 1 H&A game not from having a super coach.

Well a big MEH to that. They both come well behind Shane Fisher and Dion Miles.

Your right - he coached at the AFL so that anwers the question about who is the best coach - no debate, don't even know why 'you' raised the query.

Your also correct on the basis that Darley didn't improve just the others dropped off.

You are the Oracle

I never raised the query. I thought school went back this week.

Northey won the flag with the 4th best side in the comp. Learmonth lost the flag with the best side in the comp. There is no debate about who is better.

They did improve with Newman and Cheeves but with the comp dropping its standard was the main reason you only lost 1 H&A game.

As for the Oracle seeing as Suts is playing at South he is gone until after the Grand Final.

You could quite easily argue that just bacause you have coached at the highest level, that does not mean you are automatically a great coach.
There have been plenty of ordinary ones also !
Here is just a few examples -

Alan Joyce
Tim Watson
Terry Wheeler
Wayne Brittan
Percy Jones
Graemen Cornes
Royce Hart
Wayne Shimma'
Ian Stewart

Anyone got any more ?

Re: Ballarat Football League

Gary had a side that was clearly the best but could not get them over the line. Miller, Cheevers, Neman, Cape are in the elite as BFL players.

Northey may not have been able to be out there to force those points but he gets credit to make sure the pressure was applied to certain individuals that can spray shots. Also lock down on the better players that rarely miss and force other players to have shots where they are less comfortable in doing so. Positioning can force a player to lead wide or to a less advantageous spot.

So it is very easy to go past GL and pick Northey. Anyway bad kicking in bad football and as the person that coaches the players that falls on GL.
I think he meant J. Edwards not Cape. Tuddy was BOG in GF by a mile.

Northey has coached at the highest level but he had been building that side for 4 or so years.
Give Learmonth some credit he walked into a side it 2007 that only had 5 regular senior players left from 2006, after everyone walked out with Power and Scoble. They then lost Cape for the season and went on to only win 4 games the worst effort by a Darley team in 15 years. He then went and got Cheeves and Edwards 2 quality players, and also Newman who on his day was as good as anyone, but played pretty much all his games against bottom 6 sides for the year.2 players in Young and Digger edwards returned after seasons off and learmonth took them from 3rd last to top in 12 months, with only 3 new players to the club, a huge effort.
Darleys exceeded all expectations last year and yeah let a flag slip, but we cant cry over spilt milk and have moved on and recruited well again this year so will see how they go.
I think everyone will agree under learmonth Darley are a much better football team and club im not saying he is the best coach but he has made a huge difference to a side that was ok at best and deserves some credit.

Re: Ballarat Football League

I see a clearance report up on the BFL site, there goes my theory ;)

Re: Ballarat Football League

Hello all. I have now returned and been laughing at the form of the great KA. Redcarded early in the year! Even the mods had enough of your dribble. Then to make matters more laughable the greatest critic of northey now rates him as the best coach in the bfl!!!

Good to see all you darley mouthpieces back on board. Can't wait to see the tall poppy fall again.

Sutts has retired as there is not enough ego room left in souths forward line.

Not entirely sure why Sutts would have attended most training sessions then... maybe he just wants to keep fit for his time off?

Can't speak much for most on that list (FYI Danny Abbott ex-Darley) but Ash Sweet's a great pick up by the Cobras. There's nothing of him up he throws himself into the contests and has a great goal sense.
