In my opinion Ballantyne is blocking his opponent in a marking contest. They are both looking for the ball to arrive. Looks pretty much in the rules, and commonplace in any game. Can't see any intention at all to do more than that.

what drugs you on? no intention, common place? yes, common place for a turd like Ballantyne, and maybe not intentional, being a dirty little dog probably comes naturally to him, probably at a stage now where he doesnt realise he is doing it!! cant believe freo fans are that one eyed they are trying to defend him!

I've never met a Freo supporter before so I had no real opinion of them...until now.
They're obviously all high quality individuals, every one of them. Their parents must be so proud.

Newman wasn't his opponent. Newman had eyes on the football. Ballantyne was being stood by someone else (my memory escapes me who it was). Ballantyne makes a forceful action against Newman. It was a dirty play.

For the record, I had no issue with Shuey copping time on the sideline. I see it as a similar action, perhaps a little more forceful.

What game did you think was being played? I thought it was AFL? Forceful action is against what rules exactly, or even generally.

Waaaaaaaaaaa waaaa waaaaa... God it feels nice to have beaten you clowns on your own turf. Pathetic reactions from a pathetic club.
You, aside from the $$clubs, are the only club to have less success than Richmond since you were established.

Nah but Ballantyne's actions are completely ok. Kids that are 15-16 watching this match would think it's ok to knock and hit your opponent off the ball. The AFL need to put their foot down on these snipers. Ballantyne, Stevie J does it, Nathan Lovett Muarry is another.

Two things wrong with the AFL at the moment that the AFL needs to stamp down quickly. Snipers and Divers.. It's starting to get ridiculous

Has he been charged? What do you see him cited for?

I'd be throwing him out if I was Ross Lyon. That'll be about 4 weeks off for being a campaigner two separate times this year.

A 'Moo' o_O;)

Just makes me wonder if you saw the incident. The ball isn't there, but it is coming. Pretty sure you can block your opponent and protect the area where you think the ball is going to be. If it isn't ok, then you get a free kick. It is thoroughly covered in the existing rules and gets paid regularly.

I thought a sniper is someone who takes out an opponent behind and outside of the play. Ballantyne was suspended for that previously as he should have been.

are you seriously trying to say what ballantyne did was in the act of going up in a marking contest?? seriously, take the purple glasses off, or get an idea about footy. both players moving towards the marking contest and as they were getting ready to go up, ballantyne stops running and deliberately puts an elbow into newmans gut. and the way he went down is the way anyone would have in that situation. he could not have expected that hit to come like that and definitely would have winded him very badly.

It was more in play than Luke Shuey's. Didn't see tears of rage from Freo fans when Shuey whacked Duffield. Don't really understand the outrage. What's Ballantyne done that is so bad that means he needs to be eradicated from the game?

"Blocking" is what Johnson did to Riewoldt when he rolled his ankle. What Ballantyne did will be referred to by the MRP as "striking".

Err, what. Judd throws a stray elbow and walks away with a Brownlow. Ballantyne does the same and apparently he's the biggest blight on the game of all time.

The reactions of the footy community are stark in their differences.

What differences I cannot recall anyone but Carlton supporters defending Judd for that elbow pretty much every other supporter did and still do point out that Judd is a protected species and that he should have been suspended.

So now we are seeing two deluded sets of fans as the Fremantle fans defending of Ballantyne is equal to the Carlton fans defence of Judd.

are you for real??
whether he is cited or not, and i will be shocked if he isnt, how can you seriously think that action is common place and not an intentional dog act.
it is the one thing you are taught from a young age is that elbows are a no go.
just watching the replay on the footy show right now, he takes a peek at where he newman is exactly, takes a step towards newman while newman is looking skywards at the footy, and lets an elbow rip into his midriff. YOU CANT DO THAT!!! GET IT THROUGH YOUR STUPID PURPLE HEAD!!!!

Yeah i did see the incident, and i just watched it again on AFL.com.au.

YES you can block an opponent and protect an area if the ball is 5 metres within play. The ball was still on it's path to the pack when Ballantyne hit Newman.

And please tell me... when a player blocks and protects a team mate or protects the drop of the ball, 98% of the players use their bodies to block or sheppard out a player... why does Ballantyne automatically use an elbow?

I don't really see anyone saying Ballantyne should get off. Most Freo fans think he will probably go. That's out of proportion to the cries he is the biggest blight on the game. Delusional, really. He is no different to a number of other players who bend the rules.

It isn't your memory. It is your understanding about how the game is played. It is 22v22. Nobody "stands" a player like Ballantyne, and just because they go with him as a tagger it doesn't mean Ballantyne can only tussle with him. They are all competing for the ball, and he got whacked, which pretty much means he is competing with Ballantyne.

block
Then for sure he will cop a suspension. Personally, I think he is blocking an opponent.

blocking is just that, but striking with an elbow is striking. i cant believe you cant see the difference.i dont care who it is judd (yes it was a disgrace)or otherwise but he is a serial offender and there is nothing wrong with needle to get his game up but he crosses the line that most players stay within which is why i loved the roo reaction. sometimes you would like to give 1 out as the offender plays outside the current rules but unfortunately you cant do so it now so its incombant on the mrp to send a message to him. i dont care who it is hayden, king,sj or anyone 1 else.

Tribunal rules were changed this year so that any strike with an elbow is graded as "intentional". Blocking defence won't be countenanced.

At face value I think it's worth two weeks, but it may multiply out to more.

Bend the rules??? he elbowed someone who in all fairness would not have been expecting to be elbowed like that to even think that is bending the rules is delusional. As for Freo fans not defending him Gav56 on this page is doing just that.

My understanding is just fine. There's 18 players on the field who are assigned match day roles. Yesterday, if memory serves it was Morris who played on Ballantyne when he was up forward. Ballantyne made a dirty play just as Shuey made a dirty play. Why you insist on pressing a point that is disproven by the video evidence makes no sense to me.

It will only be time before we'll be reading "Ballantyne to face court after assulting a women" in the Perth papers.

Bit confused here. So it sounds like you are acknowledging that he did it within play, not behind play "sniping"? Players battle for position all the time.

If he did anything illegal, bring the suspension. No problems with that.
