Bate on his off days...

Quite possibly the worst footballer going around?

You wonder whether it's worth playing him unless we are sure he is 100% and has a couple of Casey games under his belt? Just looks so disinterested and cumbersome.

It may just be the way God made his face, but he seems to always look like hes falling asleep out there, even when he does play well... lacks intensity for mine.

^ yer, I'm trying to think back to when he last played a really really shit game.

I'm guessing he wasn't 100% right.

he did get knocked out and have blood coming from his head in the 1st qtr
Our game plan does not alllow him to be at his best it calls for him to run back into defence and charge forward when we have the ball in the hope of getting a mark.

He usually has 2 defenders who end up spoiling him and we never ever honour his first lead but usually his 3 or 4 when he is too stuffed to get a break on his opponent.

Seeing he was underdone Bailey should have played him in the forward 50 pushing up to CHF , he has no idea of player management

We have a gameplan and no one told me????

Brad Miller did take him out in the first quarter, and further, he probably wasn't fully match fit after an injury-interrupted pre-season.

Don't worry though, he'll be fine, one of our best players in my view.

Some people really don't read posts.

I'm not advocating dropping him, nor delisting him. Simply saying that the discrepancy between his best and worst is not good enough, needs to work harder when things aren't going right for him.

Bate on his off days likes to play guitar, bit of Playstation and play AFL football in rd 1.

He's a good footballer but last year he didn't play well early rounds too. Think he was injured 08 but struggled first up. 07 don't think he started flash either.

Bates got a history of starting really slowly especially with an interrupted pre-season. Bate is not the answer to our forward line worries at the moment. He's a 3rd forward, would be an absolute star playing alongside Riewoldt and Kosi. Alas he is playing alongside Brad Miller.

Well when you label him potentially the worst footballer going around..

Brad Miller in the forward pocket/closer to goal is worth trying - we seem to be setting players like Bate and Pettered up around Miller but we need to start doing it the other way.

It's very simple really - If Bate was 'underdone' or 'not %100', then why the f&%k did we even play him in Round 1??? What good, at all, would this do? Surely you would replace the guy with someone who is %100 fit, raring to go?

I heard he was underdone in the last Casey game before round 1, & was still underdone heading into round one. I've also heard this as an excuse by fellow posters on this thread. Again i ask....so why play him???

On another note, although i think Spencer is a clumsy dud the majority of the time, we simply need to play him as a back up ruckman, we have no one else, and he can win a tap out or two.

Also, to all of those who are asking for Stafanie Martin to come back in - don't be ridiculous. The guys is as unco as Spencer, looks awkward all of the time, and simply cannot play imo. He serves no purpose to the team unfortunately, imo. Please Bailey - only play players who are %100 fit & %100 ready to play for MFC - Stop seemingly playing favourites!

Who else have we got who can play a reasonable game up forward. Danny Hughes? Didn't look up to it against WC, neither did Martin as you pointed out. Juice? He's a possibility but he's still Juice! Watts wasn't ready. Maybe Maric or one of the other smalls, but really I'd still play an underdone Bate because when he is right to go he's our most effective player across half forward.

No doubt if Jurrah and Sylvia we're fit for round 1 we probably would have gone in with them, Petterd, Green and Miller, but they weren't.

Hopefully Bate has found some touch for this week. That combined with an improved team performance and he might be back towards his better footy.
