It’s Dream Team – reimagined!

Welcome back to another season of Baz Stats. Sure, last season’s iteration may be incomplete (I compiled the stats; I was just way too busy to publish it!) but we are back bigger and better than ever.

This season’s version is inspired by two things – head-to-head match ups and those dirty, rotten cheats from the East Side Hawks the debate over positional nominations that ensued at the back end of season 27. JoshWoodenSpoon’s SpoonMeasures delved into for and against for each player in season 27 and while I enjoyed his series, I had no idea how he came up with his numbers (admittedly, I didn’t ask) so I created my own.

The basic premise of Baz Stats this season is that each position is different and cannot be measured equally however performance relative to your opponent and your position can be measured equally against all other players. Each player's for and against stat lines will be compared to the average for and against stat lines for each position (based on a sample of S27 data) and converted into an Adjusted Dream Team score.

No longer will it matter whether you’re playing ruck rover or in the back pocket. Your Adjusted Dream Team score will simply reflect your performance against that of your direct opponent. For simplicity (if you can call it that), all scores calculated will be based on starting matchups. This will give an advantage to players whose opponents are subbed off the ground but let’s face it, you can hardly win a match up from the bench, can you?

About that….

Interchange players haven’t been left out this season. Their performance will also be assessed against a direct opponent which, for the sake of this series, will be the opposition interchange player listed in the same position (ie. interchange player 1 for team 1 will be measured against interchange player 1 for team 2 and interchange player 2 for team 1 will be measured against interchange player 2 for team 2).

So what does it all mean?

Well, this series moves away from weather-adjusting events that subtly alter the stats of the most prolific Dream Team scorers and instead strives to give all players a Dream Team score based on their performance regardless of position. It won’t predict the Mobbs Medalist but it will certainly help identify players worthy of an All-SFA berth in positions where stats aren’t kept or looked at, as well as helping the league’s admin select the TFLUA Tiger Award for the best player regardless of position.

So sit back, put your feet up and get ready for some Sweet stats – Baz style!

As the full back for the furies is my assessment of success based on the amount of goals kicked by my opponent; which is all that matters

or some BS DT point comparison
It's your full stat line, for and against. You might concede 3-4 goals but if you pick up 10-12 possessions yourself there's a strong chance you'll win the match up. Loonerty already has goals conceded with the DERF.

Sounds complicated- My plan is to get no possessions, just punch forward flogs and stop them getting the qooty

You have the time for this?
Serious answer though - I've learned how to make the process more efficient each season so I can get more out of the least amount of data.

Patience my child. The last person to spam multiple media threads in a single day finished second in the EKA.

Success will be determined by 'The Edge' award. You just worry about getting a tap.
