It's loooooooooong this year.

I wonder if interest will hold? It's a nice summer holiday routine to get into - few beers, sit back and watch, always a game on. But going so deep into February when everyone is back at work, back at school...?

Playing BBL moneyball tends to keep games interesting, I find.

But there’s definitely going to be some fatigue once everyone starts going back to work/school.

A lot will depend on how the Stars and Sixers start the season. If they're out of it by halfway this year like they were last year, it's going to be a long backend to the tournament. ALthough, the longer tournament does make it easier for a team to recover from a poor start unlike the previous system.

People letting their Twenty20 hate show if they claim less than 2 months is too long a season. They might lose a few thousand attendees in the last couple weeks because people won't bring their kids but it'll be the finals and the lead in so interest and viewers will stick around.

I don’t think the die hards will stop watching, but you might lose a bit of the mainstream.

TV ratings will still remain strong & attendances will go down a bit. Personally think it is excessive now and also has the impact of affecting import availability/continuity which is an important component of the competition. But I daresay CA have weighed up these tradeoffs with the balance sheet and think the comp can continue to grow.

Most people were complaining on how short the seasons are.

Imports coming and going are probably my biggest worry. The best ones are the ones that stick around and play the whole season - think Mccullum, Pietersen, Rashid khan (pretty much). It’s a bit of a buzzkill for a player to leave halfway through a tournament. The fact the Thunder have got both Buttler and Root coming in for only four games is going to be detrimental to their campaign imo.

The BBL is going to have an overseas import issue very soon. The UAE have set up a T20 comp around the same time and have already landed DeVilliers, Russell, Morgan, David Miller and Mitchell Johnson.
Add that to the fact that Australia, South Africa and New Zealand all have home tours around this time, then that's 6 Test playing nations that are by default unavailable (plus India who don't let their players play). Extending the season is only going to make matters worse for attracting overseas talent.

I'm not sure how much growth there can be in a competition where the headline acts are domestic players

Way too long. 10 games was perfect I reckon. Interest didn't even hold last year, from memory there was only about 41k at the BBL final whilst I think I'd be right in saying every regular season Strikers game had more than that (tickets the same price too). Half the BBL crowds are kids on their Ipad and I guess they don't need to be occupied once school is back.

Interested to know how many of the "Oh it's too long" crowd are the same people who advocate without a hint of irony for 7 Test matches each summer.

Well then why don't we just get rid of the state competitions, forget tests and ODIs and play 6 months straight of hit and giggle!

Anyway I read in the paper that CA have plans for Christmas Day blockbuster, not sure if its for this season? But that should be a huge hit...

Not this season but there are 2 Christmas Eve games to keep us occupied... Even myself as a complete Cricket nuffie who doesn't particularly like Christmas can go 1 day without Cricket.

Has anyone ever advocated 7 test matches each summer?

Genuinely never heard that opinion from any person
