Don’t forget that nowadays the victims start at missing at least three and probably four games. The penalties should be higher to reflect that.
Sorry disagree we shouldn't be handing out suspensions on the outcome should we, if reaper gets up and played out the game and no concussion it's 0 games?

Reaper will miss you'd think a month, as its so hard to see where the contact was too he's head. Almost like McCartin was. Who initiated the push and shove?

Unless there's other footage you can't suspend a guy for defending himself can you, he didn't throw a punch, he didn't line him up, the second square guy throws him to the ground, and there's a tangle of bodies. Imagine if it's overturned and its 1 and 2 weeks suspension. The league would just about need to shut itself up.

No one wants to see a guy king hit, a punch thrown or lined up when they're open and hit high, but Aussie rules has always had intimidation factor in senior footy, what I saw was two guys blowing off some steam another come in and help the young team mate throwing reaper to the ground.

What's happening to our game? We might as well get a round ball out, put a net behind the goals and bsn tackling, ban speckys and just switch to soccer

Reaper is consulting a concussion specialist and is talking he may not play again

Reaper is not saying he may not play again, others are saying it for him.

Concussion is seriously tricky for administrators. It’s hugely serious but once a player chooses to take the field his history cannot be taken into account. Players can’t be expected to go easy on a bloke because he has a history of concussion and may not play again due to one more hit.

Let me say, I am a person who incurred multiple concussions, too many and suffer consequences and side effects to this day and will forever but I chose to keep going.

If the act is deliberate and malicious then punish that but you can’t impose suspensions because it might be the one that ends someone’s playing days

Umm I just watched the incident and I feel for the injured player but that incident is not worthy of 7 weeks and 4 weeks. I’ve seen a hell of a lot worse get no weeks or less weeks. 7 weeks gee whiz.
Seen a similar incident on video of an Avondale Heights v Greenvale game last year in which Maric from GV slung a player from behind in a scuffle in a much more vigorous manner and got a lot less weeks. Was with a few minutes to go in the game and player was knocked out.

That's OK Roota, but let me say this. Any player who uses a sling tackle where his opponents head hits the ground is just asking for trouble. You suffered multiple concussions. You don't want your kids/grandchildren to be in the same situation. Serious neck injuries can also occur. I remember a few years back an Albury v Yarrawonga match being abandoned and the young Albury player ended up in a wheelchair.

In summary a sling tackle bringing an opponent down head first is a malicious act and needs to be stamped out of the game.

I believe these blokes decided to plead guilty, would hate to see what they would have gotten if pleaded not guilty then found otherwise.

Only take the AFL to bring in a rule that any sling tackle is a free kick and it would soon disappear. While on umpiring its time for umps to just throw the ball up at stoppages and get on with the game, if a third player contests the ball up pay a free against them, this rubbish of umps asking whos going up is a waste of time. AFL worse with boundary umps waiting for the OK from central ump to continue play, Just throw the bloody thing in.

While not disagreeing with your general point, the incident in the Albury v Yarrawonga game wasn't from a sling tackle. The Albury player crashed into the Yarrawonga players hip. A horrible outcome, but nothing more than a terrible accident. There was (at least publicly) no animosity from the player or Albury as a club, and there was no suspension or investigation.

So sanctions cannot only be based on outcomes, no matter how serious the outcome may be.

Does anyone know why the Bendigo Sadvertiser has turned off all comments ? Are they that worried about their poor reporting ?

It might be because they don’t want anyone to see how little interest there is in the articles?

I don’t recall many comments forthcoming when you could. I get why they do it but subscription has killed what was left of that paper.

Yep its a struggle to get one side on the park and add in no a grade netball
It is like a death by a thousand cuts. I know the people there are busting their guts, but not being able to field a reserve side is just not sustainable. What does it do to the morale of the remaining reserve players who just want to play a game of football with their mates and support the seniors. If senior players are injured in the 2nd half of the season they will have to be replayed by guys without any match practice. That is a recipe for more injuries.

What can be done?

1. Until the end of the season.

What about Maryborough reserves being topped up by players from the club with the bye and possibly surplus players from other clubs. If no stone is to be unturned by the club and the BFNL Board then give this a go.

2. At the end of the season.

Decision time. However, if the club is to continue in the BFNL it has to be able to field a reserves team. If necessary allow one year with a reserves and no seniors like Kyneton did a few years back if there is a shortage of players. If the club cannot regroup after one season like Kyneton did (and Corowa last year in the Ovens & Murray) then, if it is to continue, it has to merge with another local club(s) or go to a minor league - possible both.
