Best 22 of players recruited outside the under 18's

If the criteria involves players who were eligible to be drafted at 18 but were overlooked until the following year, or even later; then Sloane, Mitchell and Harry Taylor would have to be in the side :thumbsu:
Criteria is pretty much guys who weren't drafted directly out of the under 18's. So guys like Zorko, Issac Smith, Barlow, Hanley ect.

Didn't realise how many good players there are who were drafted out of state leagues. Just goes to show it's not over for kids who miss out and you don't necessarily need top draft picks to get good quality players.

Check Dickson's goal tallies for his other games. Goalless many times. Puopolo has been a clear best 22 player for 4 years now. Dickson has been dropped many times in his career.
He's kicked a few bags as well. He was injured a lot last year, other than that he's been fairly consistently in the bulldogs 22. Plus you also need to consider that fact that Puopolo is playing for the best team that clearly scores the most as opposed to a team who have been cellar dwellers for the past few years. He's going to get a lot more opportunities than Dickson to score goals.

What a stupid argument. Puopolo is behind Roughead, Breust, Gunston and Rioli (as well as Buddy when he was here) in terms of being used as a target. I rarely see anyone hit him up in a match.

He is a super defensive pressure forward and that's his role which he plays to aplomb. Dickson is nowhere near Puopolo in this area. If so, shouldn't he be comfortably ahead in goal kicking?

The fact remains one player has been a certain best 22 player ever since he debuted in Round 7 or so of 2011. The other player cannot lay claims to that.

Trolling through afl site and here it was a hard thing to find who was eligible and who wasn’t than trying to fit them into only 22. It's arguably not the best 22 in terms of longevity, games played, All Australian selections etc. but I've tried to make the team structure as I'd like to see it in a game.

Dale Morris and Sam Fisher incredibly stiff to miss selection in the back half but I went for the hugely under rated Stratton and two attacking defenders in Gibson and Hibberd instead.

Good midfield depth behind the starting team I struggled to find.

Hardest thing to find was a worthy KPF behind Crameri. Obviously Pods stands out above guys like Jenkins and Blicavs as a premiership player and a key player in Geelong's road to 2011 premiership success, not necessarily on the day but without his input they may not have made the game to begin with.

On current form Brown is the better option but I couldn't look past the impact of Pods at Geelong and his role as that CHF/ second tall that Geelong arguably missed in the period between Pods and Clark.

BACKS: Ben Stratton ~ Scott Thompson ~ Lee Spurr
HALF BACKS: Michael Hibberd ~ Harry Taylor ~ Josh Gibson

MIDS: Pearce Hanley ~ Matt Priddis ~ Issac Smith
FOLLOWERS: Aaron Sandilands ~ Michael Barlow ~ Sam Mitchell (CAPTAIN)

HALF FORWARDS: Bernie Vince ~ James Podsiadly ~ Paul Puopolo
FORWARDS: Hayden Ballantyne ~ Stewart Crameri ~ Ben McGlynn

INTERCHANGE: Lewis Jetta ~ Shane Mumford ~ Dayne Zorko ~ Tendai Mzungu

Feel free to pick it apart and tell me what you think. I'd appreciate feedback

Dale Morris is an All Australian who is closing in on 200 games. I wouldn't be so baffled

My bad I thought the poster was referring to Steven Morris of the Tigers!

I am a huge Dale Morris fan and he is a certain inclusion in this side, my apologies.

Ssshhh please don't forget the anything Hawthorn is better than anything else rule!

Look above, I thought he meant Steven Morris, also I'd like to think I am a pretty balanced poster on this site and have been for a long time.

What would be interesting to see is if there is anything peculiar to this type of player that has helped them succeed, and if from that we can conclude any key ingredients missing from the U18 development approach.

Take Barlow and Mitchell for example. Neither are the quickest blokes going around, but both seem to have time and poise when they get the ball. If they were naturally not quick, is more time in a lower grade league beneficial for them to develop their particular strengths?

More like the lack of speed was a reason for clubs not to draft them, in the process missing that they were good footballers, as opposed to athletes.
