In the 70's jesualenko,Picken,Van Der Haar,Jack Hawkins,Knights,Baker,Barker and Teasdale from my childhood memories.
Then it was Michael Roach until his body clapped out,John Roberts at South used to take a few and all the usual suspects in the 80's as mentioned.

Up until Howe, Barker and Modra were the most regular takers of BIG marks I ever saw. But these two would be lucky to have 3 or 4 nominations for mark of the year each year. Howe, if he plays a full year looks like he could get as many as 10.

Carery, Ablett, Knights, Capper all were great marks but they did not take BIG marks with anywhere near the consistency of the other 3.

EFA

10s: Howe
00s: Burton, Russell Robertson
90s: Shaun Smith, Mods
80s/90s: GAS
80s: Capper
70s/80s: Van Der Haar, Knights, Barker, Picken, Roach
60s/70s: Jezza
50s: Have heard Coleman was a great aeralist too, and from the same era, Ian McKay of North Adelaide (have posted pictorial evidence of his marking in another thread)
30s: Bob Pratt, Ron Todd (also from pictorial and anecdotal evidence)

You're forgetting a very big one from the 70's-80's

The thing you have to remember is that prior to 1990, they didn't have a camera at every ground, so some of the work of those 70's ad 80's players are not captured for posterity like every single one of Howe's pearlers are.

Take Barker for instance. St Kilda were shit while he played for them, so didn't often have cameras at their games. But I remember seeing him in a couple of games that weren't televised take a couple of absolute monsters as a young un.

Nicky Winmar hasn't been mentioned yet. now there was a bloke who could take some crazy high marks.
Good call.
A couple of blokes come to mind that get forgotten about David Bourke took quite a few hangers and Billy Brownless. The kids today probably would have a hard time believing billy took hangers but he could seriously take some big grabs.

I'd say Barker is the best and most consistent I've seen.Good point about the cameras.
I was at a St.Kilda v Richmond game at Moorabin where he took a huge mark right in front of where I was on the fence and I've never seen it since.

The first aerialist I remember was Phil Baker at North, he took a number a great marks in the late 70's. Peter Knights and Peter Moore were a couple of others that I remember back all those moons ago. In the 80's and early 90's Shaun Smith, Brett Allison and Wayne Carey took a few, but Gary Ablett Snr seemed to take one every week. He had unbelievable aerial skills.

Jeff Farmer took some absolutely amazing marks during his time.

One of my most vivid memories at the footy as a kid:

Remember it being replayed about eight times after he took it.

Would that be the one on David Palm's head?

There was one game at Moorabbin during the mid/late 80's against Essendon where Winmar and Simon Madden took two of the biggest marks you'll ever see, and anyone who was there will tell you. But no cameras.

Laughable

It was very common for theses two to do spectacular marks regularly and not only that but kick bag of goals.

Regularly being three or four a season, not three or four a month like Howe.
Sorry but you're wrong. Howe has taking almost as many speccies as Ablett and he hasnt played a quarter of the games.

Same with Modra, Burton, Smith, Tarrant. It was always 4-5 massive ones a season but Howe literally takes on every game.

how would you know this when most of Ablett Snr games have never been seen before?
Throughout the 80's, there were none better.

Tom Hafey once visited the school and gave a speech and he was asked a question about Snr, his very words were "he use to take mark of the year every week" I think I'll take Tom's word over yours as he not only coached Snr but he also coached throughout the 1980's.

No actually but I do remember the Palm one now you say it. For the life of me I can't recall who was underneath but Bryan Wood kicked it I reckon. It was about 1978-79.

I seen a lot of Gary Ablett as did a lot here no doubt but I'd say Tommy Hafey has taken to a little bit of exaggeration there as we all do.
Ablett took great marks constantly but I don't reckon he took huge screamers that often. Early days he did.
He took a lot of what I would call really top pack marks where his power and strength were unbelievable but the huge big hangers he'd take occasionally here and there.
Not because he couldn't because he could without any drama at all I just don't think he had to. He became smarter and had so many different ways of beating his opponent that he'd out body or lead etc.
The big screamers he took though were bloody good.
