I was fortunate to witness many of his SANFL games at Sturt & he could have been anything

If not for his accident, could he have been another South Australian star lured back home by the Crows? Or would he have been too entrenched at Carlton by then, as Kernahan and Bradley were? Would have been just 26 years old, right in his prime, by the time 1991 rolled around.

No doubt would have stayed. Such a sad turn of events what happened. What happened to Phil Hughes reminds now much it is a blessing to have Peter Motley still living.

Nathan Ablett springs to mind. Had all the talent in the world, but unfortunately didn't have the passion or heart to match.

I don't know about this. I grew up in Geelong and played against both Nathan and Gary at different levels and Nathan never really stood out where as Gary, contrary to the myth that he wasn't a gun junior, was best on ground every week. I'm not convinced he would have even got close to playing AFL he wasn't an Ablett.

Remember that he was given an armchair ride all the way to the AFL by the way of representative selection and the best coaches from a very young age. Not to mention Geelong keeping tabs on him and having many role models and connections easily available to him. A lot of people actually went out of their way to make him into an AFL player because of vested interests. Almost every other kid in the country isn't granted that luxury of being guided towards the AFL. Many others would have gone on to be better players than Nathan ever would have given the same chance. I know he didn't have a love for the game, which is true but it just adds to the myth that he could have been anything if he tried.

John Mccarthy was handy for Port in his last season, cemented his spot in a side after struggling to get a consistant run with it at Collingwood.

Knew that. The point is he is not in running as best player to have played for this period of short time.
Adrian McAdam and Allen Jakovich made a far more sensational impact in short time they played in the league. Just wondering, were you there the day Adrian McAdam kicked 10 goals against you mob ? Wish I had seen that. You guys were on top of ladder playing at your home ground and he does that. Sensational!!!

Sadly I witnessed it on TV....

played under 50 games?

Well I noticed his son got a mention and he played 92 for Sturt so I'm guessing it's biased towards vfl/afl. Geof played 0 vfl games which is below 50 :D
