Best singing voices ever?

Had a quick flick through the thread and didn't see Steve Winwood anywhere. He has a fantastic tenor and is the voice of many iconic songs and hits over the years. He is also one of the greatest piano/keyboard/organists ever.
A surprising omission I agree but hardly a Tenor.

Robert Plant of Led Zepplin fame has to be amongst the best rock voices ever.

I wasn't really a fan of hers, but Whitney Houston sure had a great voice too.

Mecury, Dickinson, Patton, Young, Dio, Martin, Pesch and Martina Hornbacher for my music followings they have repertoire and range.

The best i've heard David Nail. not usually my sort of music but i got dragged to a concert he was doing in hell i barely remember the country germany i think. the lungs on this bloke were unreal we were up in the nosebleeds, they lost power and still he's singing was spot on and we heard him all the way up in the 2 second tier as if he was 3 feet away.

I've never heard anyone that can sing that loud while maintaining the same pitch as when he used a mic.
then when he got power back he song sound of a million dreams. Hearing that live, was unreal.

Roy Orbison.

Always liked Bruce Springsteen's speech on him

“In 1970, I rode for fifteen hours in the back of a U-haul truck to open for Roy Orbison at the Nashville Music Fair. It was a summer night and I was 20 years old, and Orbison came out in dark glasses, a dark suit and he played some dark music. In 1974, just prior to going into the studio to record my album Born To Run, I was looking at Duane Eddy for his guitar sound and I was listening to a collection of Phil Spector’s records and Orbison’s All-Time Greatest Hits. I’d lay in bed at night with just the lights of my stereo on and I’d hear ‘Crying’, ‘Love Hurts’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Only The Lonely’, and and ‘It’s Over’ filling my room. Orbison’s voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great Rock and Rollers, to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin’ in today, and it was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and I’ll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector’s productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison.”

IMO Roy Orbison is easily the greatest singer. His voice has all the major attributes in abundance.. Range, power, pitch, expressiveness, technical prowess, tone, distinctiveness, versatility,..
And many of the major artists in the music industry
- such as Dylan, Presley, Young, Petty, Springsteen, Cash, to members of The Beatles, Bee Gees, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and U2-
revere him as its premier singer.
That's good enough for me.

not me :(

i'm fairly insanely jealous of those who can sing.. I'm a good musician and solid on a number of instruments, but my voice is very limited... annoys me very much...
My bitch is the exact obverse. I have always been able to hit a note, but my ridiculously stubby fingers and lack of co-ordination made playing an instrument a preposterous fantasy. At least my equipment is easier to transport and assemble.

Yeah, Orbison's voice was incredible. His range was absolutely spectacular.

I think Bowie deserves a shout too.

No mention yet of the sweet, sweet soulful sounds of Donny Hathaway :eek:.

Barbra Streisand, unlike so many other "divas" Babs never got into the whaling and vocal gymnastics that the rest of them did. Part of her genius is her controlled delivery - she knows when to pull the trigger and when not to. Huge range and sings with genuine emotion.

Tina Turner, not a pretty or technically great voice but so versatile - rock, pop, soul, funk, blues - whatever it is, she can sing it and do so with a level of conviction that others would kill for.

Sam Cooke, just the smoothest voice that ever existed and such a handsome dude too. So sad he died young because he would have made some killer albums as he got older.

Dean Martin, my favourite of all the crooners. He had a really musical tone and a softer, more romantic edge than his peers.

Mercury and Farnham then the rest..
