Clearly Cats 2008. Possibly the best team of the past 25 years, not just the best to not win a flag!

Of course I'm biased, but St Kilda 2009. 3 losses for the year, totalling just 19 points. Percentage of 155.

Either that or Geelong 2008. 2 losses for the year, percentage of 160+.

Minor premiers, percentage of 145.6, highest scoring H&A team in history (averaged 138.95 points per game), nine different players kicking 20+ goals during the H&A season, 8 different players kicking bags of 5 during the season. They were an attacking juggernaut, just couldn't get it done against the West Coast defence that year (1-3 record against the Eagles in four meetings that season, including two losses at the MCG in the finals).

ie Gold Coast Richmond Fremantle GWS St. Kilda Melbourne Western Bulldogs
Excluding Gold Coast, GWS and Fremantle who haven't been around for 25 years, that leaves us with Richmond, Melbourne, St. Kilda and the Western Bulldogs
Of those teams...Western Bulldogs have probably been the best over the entire 25 period but St. Kilda the best in recent times.

But in answer to the OP's actual question- Geelong 2008 easily.

It's most certainly not Essendon of 1999. The three teams below them (North, Brisbane and WB) were all their equal or thereabouts that year. Had they lost the 2000 flag, then that would be it. They didn't dominate 1999 by any stretch.

Given they did win that one, it's Geelong of 2008 by the length of the straight.

I think finishing the H&A season in third, three wins behind the minor premier Hawthorn, and getting pumped in the Qualifying Final by the second placed Essendon team (fair enough, you returned the favour in the Prelim) kind of rules this Geelong team out.
