Well I feel this could be useful for a lot, especially me, as I am struggling to get sleep. Normally it takes me 1-2 hours of lying their endlessly just waiting for yourself to fall a sleep yet I lay constantly awake. Now it seems to be getting worse. So to the wise people of BF, any ideas for a good nights sleep?

I have a strategy I have used for years which involves sleep triggers.

Basically years ago I invented a certain 'story' which I would think about before I fell asleep. Over the course of a few weeks I became conditioned to fall asleep as soon as I start running the 'story' through my mind.

Works great, now I can sleep almost anytime I want. In fact I have to be careful because if I start thinking it during a normal working day I start feeling very tired and want to sleep.

Anyone can do this, just takes a small amount of persistence to begin with until your mind starts relating the 'story' to falling asleep. The story (for me) has to be interesting enough to want to think about, but also have the capacity to encompass a lot of details. It's a slightly more involved version of counting sheep I guess, which could work by the same principles if you conditioned yourself to it.

I've heard somewhere (no idea where) that watching TV before sleep isnt a great thing to do even though i still do it

I play a lot of sports so sleeping isnt really much of a problem for me as im usually tired from whatever i do

It's useless, I've decided.

Every other week I'll have one night where I just don't fall asleep. I don't know why it happens. It's not like I'm not tired, because I am and I want to go to sleep. I go to bed at a normal hour but quite often find myself still laying there at 6am having not gotten a wink of sleep.

I have tried loads of things to beat it but it just happens every so often. Damn annoying. But then the following night I am out like a light by 9:00.

There are lots of things to try but I guess it depends on what's keeping you awake. It seems like you're very conscious of not sleeping and may be thinking too much about it (expecting to stay awake) when you go to bed, in which case you need to try to switch off your mind (which is easy if you're female).

If it's just started happening lately you could maybe try to go to bed as late as possible and wait until you're sleepy (as opposed to just tired) before you do. Initially you might be up 'til the wee hours (in my case I was up all night and couldn't go to work the next day) but hopefully as you do this you'll get more tired and sleepy earlier.

Other than that I've used a relaxation tape, where the guy talking was so boring he sent you to sleep.

As i said, it depends on what's keeping you awake.

During summer-Autumn I always have the fan on...but I find I cant sleep without it for a while in winter.

Yeh I sleep with the fan on every night, I can't sleep if it's complete silence.

The last 6 months I've found sleep difficult. There was a stage that lasted for 1-2 months where I'd get 3 hours sleep on a shit night and 6 on a good night. Would sometimes still be awake after 8am.

I think it's all just about switching the mind off. The last week I've taken my mp3 player to bed with headphones and have it going loud. If I start thinking about things it usually distracts me. It's a bit uncomfortable though.

Meditation and some L - Theanine.

have a pull... or a rub....

Yep :thumbsu: Nothing like a good fap before a nap.

Otherwise, don't have a nap during the day, not even a 1 minute cat nap. Keep yourself busy during the day, and most of all, don't TRY to get to sleep... this will just do your head in, and you'll end up tossin' and turnin' all night.

It is interesting this topic came up because I was just having the same conversation with a friend on MSN due to currently having the same issue.

My old technique was to have a good spank, used to work 8/10 times, then I became dependant on it lol

My friend suggested that I write out all my thoughts, everything going on inside my head and just keep going untill I'm exhausted.

Another solution is meditation, like focus on your breathing or focus your thoughts on one thing ala the old counting sheep method, though counting sheep makes me think of song lyrics, which makes me think of bands, which makes me think of how ****ed the music industry has become, which makes me think of black culuture and so on.

My sleep times are so inconsistent that it is ridiculous. One night I'll be asleep by 11:30 and up at 7, then the next day I wont be able to get to sleep until about 4 or 5 and will wake up early afternoon. I even had one night when I didn't sleep at all when we had that 46 degree day and the power went out over night. That was a bad night. No amount of tugging was affective.

When lying in bed I often try and trace back my thoughts to see why I am thinking about what I'm thinking about, and see how far back I can go.

Getting really, really drunk works well. That's the only time I sleep right through the night without waking up numerous times.

Not so good come the next morning though.

Apparently surfing the net at night (or doing anything on the computer) is a bad idea too. Something to do with receptors in your brain being stimulated from staring at a bright screen which makes it hard to switch your brain off afterwards.

Bit of a bummer since I usually like to log on to bigfooty for a while before I go to bed.

Btw if you like having a tv on in your bedroom at night I find it's much better to watch sport than anything else.

When I watch normal tv show or movies I find myself getting drawn into the plot which keeps me awake. But with sport you can just close your eyes once they feel heavy and listen to the drone of the commentators while you drift off to sleep.
