Best Wingman in AFL

I reckon Robbie Flower was the best winger I've seen. Kelly from Geelong, Hill from Freo & Daisy are probably the best in today's game.

Kelly had a good year, but the wingman spot is dead if he's in the best in the league.

Stephen Hill.

when I think wing, I think of 70metre players with lightning pace (Matera, Long, Aussie Jones etc.).

He's probably not the best player who 'plays' on a wing in the comp right now, but as far as pure, traditional wingmen go I'd say he fits the traditional mould the best.

stephen hill might be one day but has a long way to go

Stephen Hill, Clinton Young and Dale Thomas are a few pure Wing men in the afl at the moment.

it looks like the position is being revived with the looks of the current draft.
Polac, Smith both went in the first round to name 2.

There's a few that stand out for me and I would be happy to have any in my team.

Robert Flower (who I rate as the best of the lot)
Keith Greig
Peter Matera
Michael Turner

If you decide to take the field then you have to be accountable for your performance unfortunately. Injury is no excuse.

Don't be stupid. If he's injured and underperformed in two specific games, amongst a few years of excellent football, then it's clearly an isolated incident(s).

Montagna's the best wingman in the league, though he's also very good playing through the middle so I suppose the question yields subjective answers.

As far as 'traditional' Wingmen go I'd expect Hill to take the mantle sooner or later. For the record, I'd count Young as the traditional Wingman - runs up and down all day and sticks out wide, providing an option both ways.

Erm I've only seen Brent Harvey mentioned about 4 times in this thread.....

He has, and remains, the best wingman of the last 5 years, ffs the guy was one of the favourites for the brownlow 2 years ago.

Plays completely outside, and lines up on a wing at centre bounce; kicks running bouncing goals from wing-to-half forward.

He is still a traditional wingman.

Hill plays a tradtional style, Clinton Young, Montagna.

That is true Brent Harvey owns this thread but........... i do see him as more of a rover now days because of the lack of quality depth, North have in the midfield.

Good pure wing men are hard to find, and it seems teams go to the draft looking for them now days. A good pure wingmen on his day can tare teams apart.

Pure wingmen are also the easiest to shut down as they play a receivers role. That's why wingers like Montagna etc need to go into the centre square to mix it up. Stephen Hill will have to do the same as he will be ridden like a horse over the next 10 years.

Kade Simpson is around the best of the pure wingmen atm imo and Pearce is better than given credit. Montagna plays too much on ball as a rover to be considered solely a wingmen, but when he does, he is very, very good. Young Hill has it all in front of him

David Mackay is not the best winger atm, but is a good young winger.

EDIT: Bugger, forgot about Daisy. He'd have to rate number 1 given current (2010) form.
