As others have mentioned it's all but confirmed that he'll be at Darley next season, apparently Melton South weren't able t match the package on offer from other clubs.
Melton South could match the package, you either get one player or 6 players, South need depth, not just one gun who is there for all the wrong reasons!

Demanding between 25-35% of most clubs spenditure I'm hearing.
Interesting as S.Kennedy would be on way less but just as good although more of an inside/outside mid whereas M.Banner more used on the outside..

Good call.

The BFL have a salary cap of $140,000 I think in 2017, the rumour mill suggests Darley spend somewhere near double that, going to be interesting to see how they cull their list at the end of next year. Whatever Banner is on for 2016 won't be sustainable for more than 1 year, not in the BFL competition.

The discussion on Banner is quite funny. No doubt he is or would be getting good $$ no matter where he goes, no matter what league, he has played AFL footy, SANFL footy, WAFL, and a VFL premiership. In saying that, it is like anything, if your talking about a guy going to a bottom club who don't win, have not won for years, or a club that has just won the premiership and from all reports around the mark year in year out, your talking about two different prices for him. To go to Melton South he would want HUGE coin, as what's his incentive, to go to Darley I am sure he still wants very good coin, but not in the same ball park as Melton South. Darley may also be organising other incentives outside the club. Banner will be a top liner if he is playing at Darley. In regards to culling lists and salary caps, give me a spell, salary caps will have none to zero impact on country footy clubs IMO!

Yes it's a good point you make, however to change the culture at a club so it can start improving on & off the field, you must plan & recruit well, Banner as an outside mid who will finish brilliantly for Darley & will be a star no doubt. I personally believe that people believed Mitch would return to his grass roots & play at South as it was his junior club, however he needs to be where it's best for him & South needs to do what's best for the club, so in reality I couldn't see Mitch ending up at South, as they need to recruit heavily in numbers & introduce INSIDE MIDS, players who can get the ball & put their head over it time & time again. Once that has been established I believe the club will improve rapidly.(yes it would have been romantic) but it would have been a poor decision by the club to invest so heavily in one player.

Asked for double to play for South, cos to be honest, why would a good player want to go there. At Darley gets the chance to be in a good team and a good club with a chance of a premiership.

That's your opinion & your entitled to it, as I stated in the pervious post, your question? Why would he go there? Answer: because he has mates there! because it's his junior club! and for the rest, we will just have to wait & see, if the club improves on & off the field.

Some of the best posts I have read on big footy for some time and all pretty much spot on. There was nothing being posted on this forum for ages and now it's up & about. Keep it up boys!!

Fair enough mate, only going off what I was told.
You're spot on though, in this & subsequent posts.
Hopefully Melton South can take a step forward next season too..

The rumour mill is way off. Not double about one and a quarter. Darley have lost Lyons, banner fills that gap.

Posters sometimes forget when a club recruits they have often lost players or cut wages of other players in the same year. Generally a club payments won't go up by much they just find a way of squeezing guys in and out.

If Darley are spending 280,000 as suggested they have doubled it in 2 years. That's very unlikely. No doubt they are spending good money but I find these estimates are often highly exaggerated. If a team is a premiership chance then guys that have been there a long time will play for almost anything. That's where the estimates probably fall over.

In regards to Banner it sounds like both clubs made the right call. As mentioned Melton South need to build their depth and culture. That can only be done slowly and bringing in a handful of players is the way to go. For Darley they needed a gun to replace what they lost. Similarly for them bringing in 5-6 guys on $2-300 a game would be folly. Their depth is fine and they would push out kids. Top end talent is a better option for clubs in that position.

Could you educate me on this process? I'm intrigued!

Most of the time they won't go up by much year to year in my experience. You might lose 2-3 players and gain the same amount. A couple of players who had ordinary years might drop down a bit or some veterans who were on a good wicket might be coming to the end. The point is whenever a club recruits a player everyone assumes the club has spent up without taking these things into account.

I think what Dons is indicating is the process majority strong clubs have the opportunity to go through, most players play for unders if they know the premiership is realistically on the line, most, not all, most, then if you have had that type of success, all players know to go again you need to keep bringing in new talent, if you don't have elite talent underneath coming through, you then recruit top end. You offer the ones you want to keep most their normal money, not more, just the same, the ones that you know you can replace with depth underneath or recruits, you offer a bit less saying money is tight ,we want you to stay but if you leave we understand, happens all the time, and lists turn over. Clubs always know those players that are shopping themselves or looking elsewhere, if they are players your prepared to lose cause you know you can replace, you don't put as much effort into them and you let them think they are making the call to leave, when really your quite comfortable with turning them over!!! Where clubs get into traps, is overrating their players, especially those at clubs who are in bottom half of ladder. You should always ask yourself, would this guy get a game in the best 4 sides and where, and then pay him accordingly (I know not that easy, but if you can). Clubs down the bottom of ladders often complain about match payments, affordability, when a major part of the problem is they pay guys overs in teams winning 3 games a year.

I know where your coming from but the mail is Banner is demanding HUGE $$$, there for the amount being spent on players will have to rise. Don't worry I have been involved at clubs who have spent up big to win flags, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if Darley have the sponsors & the capacity to raise big $$, then they should be congratulated, it comes from hard work on & off the field & a good business plan, hence why they won the premiership. I cant understand why some people complain about clubs spending $$, supporters want to see good exciting footy played at a high level, all Darley has done is raise the bar, which is great for the comp. Darley should be proud that they can spend $$ and are still able to pay big $$ for Banner, but it insults my intelligence when people get on here & say they spent $130k. I know that a team in the Essendon comp spent $350 plus & went out in straight sets. They obviously invested in the wrong players, Darley got it right!

would not be far off $130k mate, if you think it is $200k plus then you are wrong

darley would have had 10 locals and 2 or 3 others on base payments in the gf side

but if people want to spread rumours about spending that much then I guess its a good thing, means it is a very well run club able to attract high end talent

Read the newspaper article on Darly signing Banner and that he went there for less than what a lot of other clubs offered him. Absolute false. Simply they agreed to pay him the money he wanted. In all honesty Darly probably have a bigger budget than other clubs around the Melton area. Yes they are a good club and the 2015 premier so a good fit for Banner.
Agree with Dons81 as I hear they don't spend over 200k and like the reasons you have mentioned as to how they could fit him in..
